Learn English: Basic Kitchen Vocabulary
http://www.engvid.com/ Let's go in the kitchen and cook! You will learn basic kitchen vocabulary to help you in the kitchen! You can use a oven to bake a cake, a kettle to make tea, and a fry pan to cook eggs! After watching this lesson, check out Adam's lesson on more advanced cooking vocabulary at http://www.engvid.com/cooking-vocabulary/ and take the quiz on this lesson at http://www.engvid.com/basic-kitchen-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. Are you hungry? You better get to the kitchen. "The chicken? The kitchen." Chicken -- kitchen. Today, I'm going to teach you about vocabulary that you will find very useful if you've ever been in a kitchen. Now, the thing that's confusing sometimes is that when you want to say "kitchen", you say "chicken". Oh, no! It's okay. It's funny. I do it all the time. Do I do it all the time? It's a very natural mistake. So if you're ever having a conversation in English, and you say "chicken" instead of "kitchen", don't worry. But we're going to go through some kitchen vocabulary. My name is Ronnie. Let me take you through the magic of the kitchen. The very, very first word that I'm going to teach you is "nuke". "Nuke?" "Nuke" is a verb, and it's a new word from the 1980s. That's so new. It's 30 years old. "Nuke" is the verb that we use for a microwave. A microwave maybe came out in 1981; I don't know. I remember in my house getting one in 1983, and I could make popcorn, and it was amazing. So about the 1980s, we had this amazing thing called a "microwave". You probably know what a "microwave" is. But if you don't, it's like a little oven that cooks your food really, really quickly. We actually developed a new word for this. We call it "nuke". So I can say, "I nuke my food." That means, "I put my food in the microwave." Ding, ding, ding! And it's ready to eat. The next thing that we have is an "oven" or a "stove". Now, "oven" and "stove" -- same word. It does not matter if you say "oven" or "stove". Who cares? I don't. An "oven" or a "stove" -- properly, the "stove" is actually a "stove top" where you would put things on top of the stovetop. And the "oven" is actually this part inside where you open the door. Inside the oven part, at the bottom here, you can bake a cake for me. I like cheesecake. If you'd like to bake me a cake, please do send it to me at www.engvid.com. I will be happy to eat it. You can "grill" or "broil". Now, "grill" and "broil" are the same. It just depends on what your oven says. When you "bake" something, the heat comes from the top and the bottom of the oven, and it's distributed throughout. If you "grill" or "broil" something, the heat comes from the top, and it cooks it on the top of the meat or whatever you're cooking. So the "broil" and the "grill" -- the heat comes from the top. And "bake"; the heat comes from the top and the bottom. So depending on what you're cooking would be the setting on what you're going to use on your oven or your stove. When we bake something, we usually have a certain temperature -- 250 degrees, or you can have 400 degrees. One is Fahrenheit, and one is Celsius. Most of them have both, but if you don't know on your recipe, you could always look on the Internet. It's magic. The next thing -- speaking about magic -- is a toaster. This is the most magical machine ever to be invented in your kitchen. Let me explain the magic of the toaster. You take a simple piece of bread. You put it in the toaster; press the button down; you wait. "Bing!" Out comes lovely, warm, crusty toast. This machine, very simply, is called a "toaster". So you put bread into the toaster -- like magic, it becomes "toast". The next appliance we have is a "kettle". Now, if you like to drink tea or coffee, you're going to love to have a kettle. A "kettle" is a machine that boils water. You can have one on your stovetop, or you can also have one that plugs into the wall. I'm not a very good artist -- or am I? But if you can kind of use your imagination, these both are called "kettles"; they're used for boiling water. Do you like coffee? I love coffee. We also have what's called a "coffeemaker". I know. Sometimes, English makes sense. Guess what this makes. Coffee. So you press some buttons -- some magic; water turns into coffee. It's like water into wine but not as nice. Better in the morning, though. The next thing that we have, another big appliance -- these, by the way, are called "appliances" -- is a "refrigerator". We never bother saying "refrigerator". We say "fridge". And on top of the fridge, we have a "freezer". Now, all of it is called a "fridge", but the top part is called a "freezer". A "freezer" is where there's going to be ice, and things in it are going to be frozen. Frozen. So let's say that you have a delicious frozen dinner, and you want to nuke it. You're going to put it in the microwave.- published: 30 Jan 2014

English Vocabulary: 12 Internet words
http://www.engvid.com What's a meme? Does the internet seem to require knowing a new language? Do bits, bytes, and blogs sound weird to you? In this English vocabulary lesson, we will go over some of the more common words that you might come across on the internet these days. Take a quiz on this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/english-vocabulary-12-internet-words/ TRANSCRIPT Hi again. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is hopefully very useful to all of you. We're going to look at Internet vocabulary, how to survive in cyberspace. Just in case you don't know, "cyberspace" is the Internet, the Internet world where everything happens. These are some very common words you'll see today. Where'll you see them?Everywhere. You'll see them in news reports, articles about entertainment, sports, finance, business -- everywhere. Because the Internet is everywhere, okay? Cyberspace -- huge. So let's start. "Viral", okay? This is an adjective. When something "goes viral" -- "to go viral". When something "goes viral", it means it spreads very quickly. So for example, I think all of you probably by now have seen Miley Cyrus shake her thing, as it were. That video of her shaking herself went viral. It became a huge hit. Thousands, millions of people saw it all over the world. I think another example is PSY. You know the "Gangnam Style" thing? I'm not going to do it for you; don't worry. But he went viral as soon as his video came up. Keep in mind it goes with this verb. "It went viral." "It will go viral." Many books about how to create a viral video, for example. So it's usually images, videos, sometimes articles, depends on what topic it is. I know that you know what "Google" is. Everybody knows Google. "Google" as a noun is the name of a company. It comes from a big number. I'm not going to try to say it because it's too big for me to say, but basically, they got this name from mathematics, I guess. But do you know that it's also a verb? "To google", and in the past tense it's "I googled it." And what am I doing right now? "I am googling." Now, some people will write with the "e"; most people will write without the "e". I don't really think it matters all that much. People will understand what you're saying. "To google" basically means "to search". This brand name, the brand name of the company, has become so popular that it is used for any search thing you do on the Internet. If you're using Yahoo!, you're not "yahooing". You're still "googling". If you're using Bing or whatever other search engine, you're probably still "googling" because that's the word that's become common. Completely unrelated: In Canada if you want a tissue to blow your nose, most likely you will ask for a Kleenex. A "Kleenex" is a brand name; it's a company name. Same idea. Google is that huge. "To post" or "a post", again noun or verb. A "post" is something that you put on the Internet, something you put on your Facebook page, something you put on your blog page, on your website. "To post" means "to put up", to put up for the Internet to spread, hopefully go viral, get you a lot of views, which we will talk about in a second. Now, if you keep a blog, then you want to have good posts, and hopefully they will go viral or will come high on the Google search, okay? "Blog" is short for "web log". So "web log"; "blog". Now, what is a "log"? A "log" is like a journal or a diary. So a "blog" is usually a personal website where people put whatever they want: comments or ideas or pictures or whatever or videos, in which case it's a vlog -- a "video log". And what you want... you're going to post your articles or your ideas, and you want people to come and see them. You're sharing this with the world. A "tweet" comes from the company Twitter. A "tweet" is a short message, 140 characters or less, so letters, spaces, dashes, etc. It's something that you share with whoever you want, whoever follows you on Twitter. You tweet this. Sometimes people will "retweet": They will take your tweet, your message, and send it out to more people. So hopefully, if many people see your tweet, maybe it will go viral and the whole world will see it. Maybe. "Phishing"." Phishing" is a very interesting phenomenon, okay? What people do is they send you an email, and they hope that you will respond and give them information: bank accounts, passwords, usernames, etc. So they send you a letter saying, "Oh, hi, you know. I'm your bank. There's a bit of a problem with your credit card. Can you send me your credit card number and expiry date and the code on the back just so I can make sure that it's actually not a problem?" Well, that's the problem. Be very careful of phishing. It sounds like "fish" because they're sending you a bait, they're sending you a little worm and hope you swallow it. Don't, okay?- published: 23 Sep 2013

Basic English vocabulary for restaurants
Basic English vocabulary for restaurants
http://www.engvid.com/ Eating in a restaurant can be a fun thing to do with friends, but if you are just learning English all the new words can be confusing. Watch and learn what an "appetizer" is and how to change your "order", and before you know it you will be "fine dining" with the best of them. Take the quiz for this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/basic-english-vocabulary-restaurants/ TRANSCRIPT Party of two, your table is ready, party of two. Okay, and these are your drinks, sir. There you go. Enjoy your meal. Bon appétit! Hi. James, from EngVid. When I'm not making videos, I need to make money, and this lesson, actually, is about restaurants. I used to be a waiter when I was younger, so I've been in many a restaurant, and I know it might be difficult for you when you -- I mean, you're coming to a new country. I'll slow it down for you because this is basic. You're coming to a new country, and you want to enjoy something. You want to have a meal out of your house. You know -- meal, dinner, or lunch or breakfast. And you go to the restaurant and then somebody walks up to you with, "party of", "table of", "And what would you like for appetizers?" "Would you like an app?" "Would you like this?" "Well, how about your main?" "What about this?" No! Please, don't. So let's slow it down. Let's make it basic, so when you enter a restaurant, you can right away know what they're talking about. Now, there're other things -- you know, we don't have everything in here. There are two other videos on restaurants that you can go watch on EngVid, but this is basic. But even if you think, "Oh, I know all this stuff. I'm very good", you might learn a thing or two. Okay? So come watch. So let's start off first. The worm has a drink. One of the first things they're going to come up to you depending -- and see, I don't know if you know this. There's "fine dining", "casual dining", and "fast food". First thing you should know, so where are you going? "Fast food" is like McDonald's, Taco Bell -- [coughs] that's not food -- Taco Bell, Subway -- most of this won't apply, okay? But some of these words, like -- well, we'll get there -- will apply, and I'll let you know. "Casual dining" is like Chili's or Montana's. I mean these are restaurants in the United States and Canada, so don't worry, but it's all similar. It means you can wear something like I'm wearing: jeans -- there you go. I'm getting old. Can't lift that leg up -- or a T-shirt, and it's okay. No one's going to complain, okay? And you can sit down. Not like McDonald's. You can sit down with a knife and fork, and you can eat your dinner. Or -- then you have "fine dining". "Fine dining" is when the people wear what we call "penguin suits". They have a tie and a shirt, and they walk up, and they serve on tables. Okay? But you need a reservation, and it's mucho dinero mis amigos, mucho, mucho dinero. For the rest of you, it's lots of money. "Fine dining" -- "fine" means "expensive", and you usually require a reservation to get a table. So let's just go with casual, because casual is where most can go. Even if you're in a foreign country and there are people who serve tourists, they're going to go mostly to casual, not necessarily fine dining, so I'm sticking with casual, all right? So casual -- McDonald's we know you just walk in. And here's something -- and McDonald people you can thank me. Next time you go, don't watch them and say, "Give me Big Mac. Give me French fries. And that I want." Try to say, "may I" or "can I have". People who work in the service industry -- which is what the restaurant industry is, where they serve you -- they want a little politeness, so try "can I have" and "may I have". You'll be surprised at how much better they serve you or treat you. Now let's go to the board with the worm, who is providing drinks. One of the first things you come in and you come to a restaurant, they might say to you, "party of" or "table for". And you're going to say, "What?" Well, "party of" -- I know you're not like, "Fiesta time, baby! Yeah, we're going to party, going to be drinking" -- no. What they mean is you are a group of people, and how many are in the group. So "party of two" or "party of four" means there are two -- you can say, "There are two in my party" or four. "There are two of us", or "there are four of us", or ten, okay? Then it's a "partay". It's not a "party"; it's a "partay". Now, "table of" means the same thing, or "table for", "table for". And they mean, for -- I did a video where I talked about "for" means "receive". Go look at it. "For" means "to receive", so "table for four people", so "table for four", "table for five" -- this is four. How many people? That's easy. And that's when they're sitting in the front. That's the first thing they will ask you. Then they will bring you to your table. And they're going to give you something called a "menu".- published: 27 Sep 2013
