In Uzbekistan
In Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia, once a crucial 'hub' on the Silk Road. This is the region's cradle of culture for more than two millennia, where cities like Samarkand and Bukhara evoke images of once great empires. Rulers like Genghis Khan and Timur, however ruthless their rule, seem to resonate in many corners of Uzbekistan. Before becoming part of the Russian empire in the 19th century, Uzbekistan was conquered by nomads who spoke Eastern Turkic languages, which is the foundation of today's Uzbek language. In the 20th century, Uzbekistan became part of the Soviet Union until it collapsed in the early 90s. Surprisingly, many people have managed to hold on to their traditional culture, despite the long Russian influence. Islam is still the main religion, and the vast majority of the population are Muslim. In 2013, I traveled across Uzbekistan, visiting places like Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent, and the Fergana Valley. Despite the current political and economic situation in the country, the Uzbek people I met remained good spirited, and showed an incredible hospitality. The people of Uzbekistan are the main theme in this clip, at work, in restaurants, in busy bazaars, and other places. I used a traditional song to accompany the images. Recital in the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Interview (Uzbek). Cut.
Agency "Jahon" - The Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the United States in conjunction with the Lynn Conservatory of Music in the state of Florida organized a concert of western classical music performed by young Uzbek masters of art. Guests of the event were representatives of the U.S. Congress, a number of government agencies, various music schools and universities, music professors, music art experts as well as journalists . On the evening included works S. Yudakov, Uzbek composer, and world-famous works of Bach, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and arias of Mozart performed by graduates of the Tashkent school of music Uspenskiy - A. Tsukervanik (violin), O. Kim (piano), Y. Kim (cello) G. Shakirova (solo piano) and D. Vargina (singer) . In his speech at the opening concert Johns Hopkins professor Fred Starr, chair of their Central Asia and Caucasus studies, made a brief excursion into the history of Uzbekistan. He particularly emphasized the great cultural-historical and scientific heritage of the Uzbek people, outstanding contribution Uzbek scientists, and thinkers such as Ibn Sina, al-Khwarizmi, al- Biruni, Al-Fargoni, and Imam Al-Bukhari in the world of science. Starr, speaking about the uniqueness of modern musical art of Uzbekistan, shared his views on national peculiarities of Uzbek classical music like the example of "Shashmaqom" and the influence of western classical music on the formation and development of modern musical art of Uzbekistan. Participants in the evening noted that the concert program left their warmest impressions about Uzbekistan. Former principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic Joseph Robinson, now a teacher at the Lynn Conservatory of Music, expressed admiration for the talent of art masters and noted that with performances by the attending Uzbek musicians one discovered new facets of modern Uzbekistan, its culture, its development, and the huge potential of the youth. "Professional performance of complex works of Western classical music shows that the country created the conditions for comprehensive youth development and education of a harmoniously developed generation," he said. Next J. Robinson said: "In my career I have not been present at such an amazing and spectacular concert with representatives of a country with a predominantly Muslim population. This multinational cast particularly impressed me and once again proves that Uzbekistan provides interethnic harmony and religious tolerance. My whole life is connected with the music, but today's concert will remain in my memory for life."- published: 21 Mar 2014
