Homs - a major city in Syria - was once a bustling center of economic activity but now it in ruins. It has been the scene of intense fighting and a government seige for weeks now, but in a glimmer of hope, a three-day ceasefire is under effect. We have already seen dozens of people being allowed out, and food aid is slowly trickling in. It is part of a UN-brokered deal between the government and opposition fighters. Up to 2,500 civilians are said to be living in squalid conditions in the city, many are starving and now some are leaving, but not everyone will have that luxury. Men between the ages of 15 and 55 are forced to stay put.

Thailand\'s embattled prime minister has been summoned by an anti-corruption panel to hear charges of negligence over a government rice subsidy scheme.
PM Yingluck Shinawatra\'s opponents, who are seeking to replace her, say the programme was rife with corruption.
If found guilty, she could be removed from office and face a five year ban from politics.
Thailand\'s political crisis has become increasingly violent since mass anti-government protests began in November.
Ms Yingluck, who flew to the northern city of Chiang Rai on Wednesday, will not attend the hearing in person at the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) on Thursday, reports say.
NACC officials say she will be represented by her lawyer, who will hear the charges set against her.
The prime minister, who denies the corruption charges, says she is willing to co-operate with the NACC \

Three years ago, millions of Egyptians took to the streets in protest against then-president Hosni Mubarak. The people\'s revolution was successful in its initial aim, ousting the leader from his post after an almost 30-year rule, and paved the way for the country\'s first ever democratic election. However, one year after Muslim Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi came to power, tens of thousands of Egyptians once again began pouring into Cairo\'s Tahrir Square to demand that their first democratically elected president step down from office.

After over seven months of demonstrations, the army announced the end of Morsi\'s presidency in what has since been labelled a coup. The military-led interim government haven\'t been able to bring peace to the country. Various factions have remained on the streets, fighting for their own specific causes. Some are pro-Muslim Brotherhood, while others are members of groups like the April 6 Youth Movement, who are opposed to Mubarak, Morsi and the current military leaders. Then there are the military supporters, who are calling for Head General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to run for president.

Meanwhile, Egypt\'s interim leader, Adly Mansour along with General Sisi, has cracked down on any form of public dissent, labelling opposition groups as terrorists and restricting protests. Hundreds of activists and oppositionists have been killed in clashes with security forces, and thousands more have been arrested.

As Egypt finds itself more fractured than ever and slowly falling back into an autocratic rule, VICE News spent time on the streets of Cairo in the build-up to the third anniversary of the Egyptian revolution, investigating the army and interim government\'s efforts to crack down on dissent.

NSA Whistleblower Edward Snowden Alternative Christmas Message: End Mass Surveillance Ex-National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden has delivered an "alternative" UK Christmas message, urging an end to mass surveillance. The broadcast was carried on Channel 4 as an alternative to the Queen's traditional Christmas message. Mr Snowden focused on privacy, saying: "A child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all." The 30-year-old has temporary asylum in Russia after leaking details of US electronic surveillance programmes. 'Mission accomplished' Mr Snowden opened his two-minute message, recorded in Russia, with a reference to novelist George Orwell, author of 1984, saying the surveillance technology described in his works was "nothing compared to what we have today". He said: "A child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They'll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves, an unrecorded, unanalysed thought. "The conversation occurring today will determine the amount of trust we can place both in the technology that surrounds us and the government that regulates it. "Together we can find a better balance, end mass surveillance and remind the government that if it really wants to know how we feel, asking is always cheaper than spying." Channel 4's alternative Christmas message has in the past featured Iran's then-President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad and fictional characters Ali G and Marge Simpson. Earlier this week, Mr Snowden told the Washington Post: "In terms of personal satisfaction, the mission's already accomplished. I already won." Mr Snowden was granted temporary asylum in Russia on 1 August. He fled the US in late May, taking a huge cache of secret documents with him. He faces espionage charges in the US. "I didn't want to change society. I wanted to give society a chance to determine if it should change itself," he told the Post. "All I wanted was for the public to be able to have a say in how they are governed." Last week, a federal judge declared the mass collection of telephone data unconstitutional and a presidential advisory panel suggested reforms. Both the judge and the panel said there was little evidence that any terrorist plot had been thwarted by the programme. A few days later, in his end-of-year news conference, US President Barack Obama suggested there might be a review of surveillance by the NSA. In light of "disclosures that have taken place" and public concerns about the programmes, there might be "another way of skinning the cat", he said. However, he accused Mr Snowden of causing "unnecessary damage" by leaking documents. President Obama said he would make a "definitive statement" in January about recommendations by the White House panel.

PM Yingluck Shinawatra's opponents, who are seeking to replace her, say the programme was rife with corruption. If found guilty, she could be removed from office and face a five year ban from politics. Thailand's political crisis has become increasingly violent since mass anti-government protests began in November. The prime minister, who denies the corruption charges, says she is willing to co-operate with the NACC "to establish the facts". The rice subsidy programme - a flagship policy of Ms Yingluck's administration - has accumulated losses of at least $4.4bn (3.2bn euros: £2.6bn) and has left many farmers out of pocket for several months. But Ms Yingluck says she was only in charge of formulating the policy, not the day-to-day running of the scheme. The prime minister's supporters, called Red Shirts, were reported to have chained shut the NACC premises on Wednesday in protest, in a bid to prevent staff from entering their offices. Tensions have been on the rise in recent weeks, with shootings and recent grenade attack targeting anti-government protest sites. Four children were among the dead in separate violent attacks in the Thai capital, Bangkok, last weekend. At least 20 people have died since hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets on 24 November. The protests have disrupted the government's ability to function over the last three months, with Ms Yingluck's opponents blocking roads and government agencies to pressure her to resign. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Three years ago, millions of Egyptians took to the streets in protest against then-president Hosni Mubarak. The people's revolution was successful in its initial aim, ousting the leader from his post after an almost 30-year rule, and paved the way for the country's first ever democratic election. However, one year after Muslim Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi came to power, tens of thousands of Egyptians once again began pouring into Cairo's Tahrir Square to demand that their first democratically elected president step down from office. After over seven months of demonstrations, the army announced the end of Morsi's presidency in what has since been labelled a coup. The military-led interim government haven't been able to bring peace to the country. Meanwhile, Egypt's interim leader, Adly Mansour along with General Sisi, has cracked down on any form of public dissent, labelling opposition groups as terrorists and restricting protests. Hundreds of activists and oppositionists have been killed in clashes with security forces, and thousands more have been arrested. As Egypt finds itself more fractured than ever and slowly falling back into an autocratic rule, VICE News spent time on the streets of Cairo in the build-up to the third anniversary of the Egyptian revolution, investigating the army and interim government's efforts to crack down on dissent.
