In Ten Years the UC-IMC Has Become:

  • A vibrant Community Media and Arts Center
  • A space of diversity in a segregated community
  • A source for creative and local economic opportunities
  • A place for many social justice initiatives and programs
  • A unique meeting place for local groups and organizations

In celebration of ten years of local independent media programs, events, and activities, the Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center is proud to announce the creation of the Sustaining Fund. The goal of this fund is to ensure the financial viability and stability of the IMC for years to come.

The Sustaining Fund is organized by dedicated IMC members. Its specific purpose is to supplement (not supplant) existing IMC revenue streams. The fund is to be sustained by individuals and organizations that commit to repeated annual donations.

Our goal is to offer IMC supporters a way to show their long-term commitment to the financial health of the IMC and the preservation of this historic building.

Purpose:

  1. To hasten paying off the mortgage within ten years, leveraging each donation to improve the IMC's long-term financial stability.
  2. To assist paying building operational costs not fully funded by existing IMC revenue streams, thereby improving the IMC's short-term viability.
  3. To make contributions to the emergency fund to ensure unanticipated major expenses such as roof or boiler repairs do not jeopardize the IMC's financial health.

The goal is to raise an ongoing yearly pledge amount of $30,000 from Sustaining Fund members and organizations.

Individuals or organizations may choose one of six levels of ongoing yearly support to the Sustaining Fund:

  • Level I Sustainer: $250 - $499
  • Level II Sustainer: $500 - $999
  • Level III Sustainer: $1000 - $2499
  • Level IV Sustainer: $2500 - $5000
  • Level V Sustainer: $5000 or more
  • Level VI Bequeather: Any amount

Oversight and Transparency:

A voluntary Sustaining Fund Governance Board composed of 4-8 Sustaining Fund members will manage the fund. They will collect funds, keep detailed financial records, disburse monies to the IMC, and prepare a written annual report for all Sustaining Fund members. The IMC will also benefit from this regular reporting. The Governance Board will meet periodically as necessary with the IMC Steering and Finance Committees.

Collection Process:

Contributions can be made in either yearly or quarterly installments. The IMC is a 501c tax-exempt organization and donations are tax-exempt. Checks should be made out to"UC-IMC Sustaining Fund." You can also become a Sustaining Fund member on our website here. The Governance Board will notify donors upon receiving their contribution and send periodic reminders as needed.

Disbursement Process:

Contributions will normally be disbursed to the IMC as follows: 50% to pay off the mortgage, 35% to cover building operational costs, and 15% to support the Emergency Fund. Changes will be made only if approved by the Governance Board. These payments will be released quarterly to the IMC during the weeks of March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31.

Commitment:

Sustainers are asked to commit to an annual donation for as long as they are able. Sustainer fund members may choose to discontinue their contribution at any time.

Individual sustainers and/or organizational names will be listed in each annual report and on the IMC website.

Governance Board:

The Governance Board is currently composed of the following Sustaining Fund volunteers:

  • Facilitators: Belden Fields and Deloris Henry
  • Secretaries: Caroline Yang and Gary Storm
  • Treasurers: Ricardo Diaz and Durl Kruse
  • Publicity: Conrad Wetzel
  • UC-IMC Liaison: Austin McCann

If you are a Sustaining Fund contributor and wish to volunteer for the Governance Board, contact the IMC at 217 344-8820. The Governance Board meets at least quarterly during the year.
