Three disused cooling towers at Didcot A Power Station have been demolished using more than 180kg of explosives. The explosion, which flattened 36,000 tonnes of material, lasted less than a minute and was streamed live online by Demolition firm Coleman and Company. Didcot A cooling towers being demolished by explosive charges on July 27th 2014. This is my edited version for the raw footage (with ground recorded audio please see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3W3BphydO0 ) The cooling towers weighing in at 36 THOUSAND TONNES were brought to the ground by 180kg of carefully placed (and of course timed) high explosives. I apologise for the grainy video, the light levels were very low at 5am and obviously we had to keep a good distance from the towers for safety reasons. Various scenic shots of the sleepy village of Didcot in Berkshire - fields, horse riding, tractors, children walking down a country road, old folks chatting, young boys playing football etc. The government's new atomic research centre is near to all this pastoral glory. Over various shots of elderly local people, women hanging out their washing and farmers tending their sheep we are told that everyone in the village is worried about this new research centre. Bert Bailey - a local shepherd is concerned about the land where his sheep graze. C/Us of men in the local pub discussing the situation - these include Bill Bradfield, Fred Carter and Ben Mullins. Nice shots of these elderly men. Various shots of the Harwell Government Atomic Energy Research Establishment. C/Us of security guard then L/S of him opening gates. Group of young women arrive at the gates for work. Group of young men follow. There is a new town which has been built to house workers at the research centre. Various shots of the prefab style houses. Security guards check lorries which arrive at the research station. M/S of local women looking out across the fields at the research station then travelling along a country road in a horse drawn cart. "The villagers let them get on with it" states the narrator: "The Atom has nothing to do with them. It belongs to tomorrow. And tomorrow can take care of itself - and the Atom..." Note: there is a suggestion of secrecy surrounding the research establishment. Didcot Railway Centre 'ONCE in a BLUE MOON' - 06/04/2014
The Didcot Railway Centre made preservation history on the weekend of April 5th & 6th 2014 when it played host to three locomotives carrying British Railways Express Passenger Blue livery. Resident GWR 6000-class 'King' 4-6-0 No.6023 "King Edward II" was joined by visiting main line locos LNER A4-class 4-6-2 No.60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" & BR(E) A1-class 4-6-2 No.60163 "Tornado" at the aptly-named 'ONCE in a BLUE MOON' event. All three locos took turns working trains on the Main Demonstration Line running both solo and in double-headed combinations. The locos ran trains in the following format... - 1st Round: 60163 "Tornado". - 2nd Round: 60163 "Tornado" & 6023 "King Edward II". - 3rd Round: 6023 "King Edward II". - 4th Round: 6023 "King Edward II" & 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley". - 5th Round: 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley". - 6th Round: 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" & 60163 "Tornado". Before & after the running of the trains, the three locos were lined-up outside the Locomotive Shed. Footage taken on Sunday 6th April.- published: 06 Apr 2014
