Maverick is a hot pilot. When he encounters a pair of MiGs over the Persian Gulf, his wingman is clearly outflown and freaks. On almost no fuel, Maverick is able to talk him back down to the Carrier. When his wingman turns in his wings, Maverick is moved up in the standings and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he fights the attitudes of the other pilots and an old story of his father's death in combat that killed others due to his father's error. Today, we'll be reviewing the Kamerar Big Slider by Photography & Cinema, a linear tracking device for your DSLR and camcorder. Just like the name suggests, the Big Slider really is a big slider. It's 39" inches long with 36" inches of actual slide. It's 3" inches wide with a 50mm inner rail. The slider is made almost entirely of aluminum and weighs about 5 lbs -- about the same as a 2 liter bottle of Coke. According to the website, the slider can support up to 30 lbs of equipment, which I totally believe. This thing is built solid. At the ends of the slider are a pair of retractable legs, which you can use to set the slider on a level surface. You can adjust the height of the slider by turning these feet at the bottom of the legs, which will give you half-an-inch of play. I have to admit -- I'm not a big fan of these feet. They're small and they tend to stick when you turn them. They also have these inner rings that are supposed to serve as a stop-gauge, but they don't work very well and just get in the way. To mount the Big Slider onto your tripod, there are ¼" and ?" threads located along the center and sides of the rail. Here we have the Big Slider mounted onto an old Manfrotto tripod with about 5 lbs of equipment. As you can see, even with just one tripod supporting the slider, there's absolutely no flex in the rail -- even at the edges. The slider and the tripod does have a tendency to tip, even at just 5 pounds, so it's a good idea to always keep a hand on the slider or use two tripods for extra support. The platform on the trolley is 3" x 5" inches. There's a single 3/8" screw at the top, a bubble leveler, and a side mounted brake to lock the trolley in place. Unlike other friction-based sliders, the Big Slider uses a roller- bearing system, which allows for smooth tracking shots regardless of how the weight is distributed across your rig. With friction-based sliders, the weight of your rig needs to be balanced in the center of the rail. But with this roller-bearing system, you get smooth slides even if your rig is front-heavy. Now that we've gone over the basic features of the Big Slider, let's see how well it performs in action... Overall, the Big Slider is a nice tracker. It's long, well-built, and smooth. I did had some issues with the retractable legs, but since our slider will be on a tripod most of the time anyways, it's not a big deal.
