Mt. Everest - The Storm (1996)
This video is posted under "Fair Use" Guidelines. If you enjoyed this high production value documentary, please support PBS and David Breashears. Breashears' book "High Exposure" is one of the foremost quality sources on the 1996 Everest disaster and is a must read for anyone interested in high altitude mountaineering. In 1996 Jon Krakaeur, a journalist on assignment for Outside, climbed up all the way to the summit of Mt. Everest as client of Rob Hall's Adventure Consultants, one the most established guiding companies on the mountain. Along side was Scott Fischer's Mountain Madness, the new kid on the block, so to speak. The resulting competition between the two expeditions may have been the proverbial straw when combined with a perfect storm, literally, that also included overcrowding, inexperience, and over-confidence. Krakauer's 'Into Thin Air' chronicled the catastrophe, but left out others' experience. That experience is conveyed in the following film.- published: 20 Jan 2014

The Wildest Dream - Conquest of Everest
The Wildest Dream is a 2010 theatrical-release feature documentary film about the British climber George Mallory who disappeared on Mount Everest in 1924 with his climbing partner Andrew Irvine. The film interweaves two stories, one about climber Conrad Anker (who discovered Mallory's body lying on Everest in 1999) returning to Everest to investigate Mallory's disappearance and the other a biography of Mallory told through letters, original film footage from the 1920s and archival photos.- published: 04 Nov 2013

Everest - The Death Zone
Everest - The Death Zone
Everest - The Death Zone Get ready for a (literally) breathtaking trek up Mt. Everest, from Base Camp at 17,600 feet; through the chilling, corpse-strewn Death Zone; to the very pinnacle of the the Earth, five and a half miles above sea level. For those brave souls who survive the harrowing climb to the top of the world, it is a transformative experience. But can the excruciating ascent—through frigid cold, blasting wind, blinding sun, and severe lack of oxygen—cause permanent, damaging changes to the human brain and body? In the wake of the 1996 disaster that took eight climbers in a single day, scientists follow a team of hikers to measure, for the first time ever, the toll high-altitude climbing takes on the heart, lungs, blood, and brain. Why do seemingly rational people make poor, sometimes fatal decisions as they approach the peak? And the danger doesn't end there—during the descent, when one climber's respiratory illness takes a terrifying turn on the isolated mountainside. ''Even with the best technology, the best training,'' says team member, producer and director David Breashears, ''you can still end up frozen to death at 27,500 feet. That's what makes Everest Everest.- published: 15 Dec 2013

Mt. Everest - The David Sharp Controversy (2006)
While not the deadliest year in Everest's history, 2006 was quite possibly the most controversial. At the center of that controversy was David Sharp, an English climber who died high up on the North Ridge. During his final hours he was passed by more than 40 climbers making their way up to the top of the world. Misunderstandings abound during the ensuing media storm, and the criticism was harsh, with people from all over the world, including Sir Edmund Hillary, weighing in. Could more have been done, and if so, at what cost?- published: 20 Jan 2014

Mt. Everest - Summit Fever and the Last Man (1996)
Despite witnessing the disintegration of his team - the South African expedition, and the carnage of the '96 Storm, Bruce Herrod was dead set on reaching the summit of Mt. Everest. Forced to retreat from top camp during the disaster, Herrod, with teammates Ian Woodall and Cathy O'Dowd were once again poised for a summit push. On summit day Herrod was incredibly slow, many hours behind his team, who topped out in the late morning. After meeting up with them on their way down, Herrod continued on up, the last time he'd ever be seen alive. At 5pm, Herrod radioed basecamp to tell his team he was on the summit and that he was getting ready to begin his descent. He was never heard from again, and being the season's last man on the mountain, his body was not discovered until the following year, hanging upside down, tangled in the ropes of the Hillary Step. He was the 15th and final climber to die during Everest's deadliest year.- published: 20 Jan 2014

Endeavour: Everest - 2. Without Oxygen
In 1978, Italian and Austrian mountaineers Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler made mountaineering history, becoming the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest without the use of additional oxygen. Known as the death zone, above 8,000 metres in the Himalayas there is only a fraction of the oxygen at sea-level. Climbers suffer sickness and headaches and risk life-threatening oedemas. As they struggled up the route through the Khumbu icefall into the Western Cwm, then up to the South Col and summit, Messner and Habeler faced all these dangers and more. Award-winning filmmaker Leo Dickinson followed them through it all and his classic film is the real-life record of their ascent.- published: 02 Feb 2014

Mt. Everest - Death on the North Ridge (1994)
In 1994, a well-known Australian adventurer, Mike Rheinberger, did battle with the notorious North Ridge of Mt. Everest. Guided by Mark Whetu, a skilled, young and upcoming climber from New Zealand with a previous Everest summit, it would be Rheinberger's seventh and final attempt at the summit. He would make it, refusing to turn around despite the late hour. Later, the summit would prove costly, for both him and his Kiwi guide; they were play a fatal game.- published: 20 Jan 2014

Climbing Everest with a Mountain on My Back - The Sherpa's Story
Every year, over a thousand climbers try to reach the summit of Mount Everest, with the annual record for successful attempts currently standing at 633. But of that number, nearly half were Sherpas - the mountain's unsung heroes. Yet the Sherpa community has remained secretive about their nation, culture and experiences living in the shadow of the world's highest mountain. Now, for the first time, they open the door into their world. Without the expertise of the Sherpas, only the hardiest and most skilful climbers would succeed. Every day they risk their lives for the safety of others, yet they seek neither glory nor reward, preferring to stay in the background. Following the stories of four such Sherpas - Phurba, Ngima, Ngima Tenji and Gelu - this film reveals the reality of their daily lives, not just up the mountain, but with their families after they return home. Also called The Sherpas' Quest.- published: 14 Nov 2013

The Dead of Everest 2013
As of mid-2011, Mount Everest has claimed the lives of over 216 known mountain climbers. The area above 26,000 feet is called "the Death Zone", where breathing fresh oxygen from canisters is necessary for all but the most experienced climbers. The atmospheric pressure is about a third of that at sea level, meaning there is about one third the amount of oxygen to breathe. The air is so thin recovery of bodies has proven impossible. Given this, many victims lay where they took their last breath. i dont own the pictures in this compilation, message me and il remove and delete the video.- published: 14 Aug 2013

Experience the beauty of Mt. Everest at night in time-lapse. While most climbers slept, I attempted to capture some of the magic that the Himalayan skies have to offer while climbing to the top of the world.
Here's a bit of what I endured at the end to make this possible: http://www.eliasaikaly.com/2013/05/into-the-death-zone/
One of the most rewarding parts of the journey was being able to share it with thousands of students on http://www.findinglife.ca
This time lapse video is comprised of thousands of photographs, processed and assembled on Mt. Everest.
Shot on a Canon 5D Mark II
-Canon 2.8 16-35mm

Mt. Everest - The Lincoln Hall Story (2006)
In 2006, Lincoln Hall, an experienced climber, found himself half frozen, alone, high up on the North Ridge of Mt. Everest. Earlier he had summited with his Sherpa teammates, but on their way down, somewhere near the infamous Second Step, Lincoln was hit with the rapid onset of AMS and HACE - High Altitude Cerebral Edema. Hours after finding himself alone, for Lincoln had been left, reluctantly, by his climbing Sherpa; he was near death. So sure of his fate, the expedition leader phoned Lincoln's wife, at home in Australia, to tell her that her husband was dead. Lincoln was not dead, and what would follow would be an amazing story about survival and compassion, when another team, lead by Dan Mazur, would sacrifice their summit dreams to help a dying climber, desperately in need.- published: 20 Jan 2014
