Drummoyne is a suburb of Inner Western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 6 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the City of Canada Bay

Drummoyne sits on the peninsula between Iron Cove and Five Dock Bay. It is surrounded on three sides by Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River and, as such, has some of Sydney's best waterfront views. Drummoyne neighbours the similarly historic Five Dock and Abbotsford.

History[link]

William Wright, a merchant, whaler and sealer bought land in the northern part of the area in 1853. The property was bounded by present day Lyons Road and Victoria Road.^[2] Drummoyne House was built in the Georgian Classical style. It was rectangular in plan with a hipped roof with a concave verandah across the entire front and returned along each side.^[2] He named it Drummoyne Park after his family home at Drummoyne on Clyde in Scotland. In Gaelic, Drummoyne means flat topped ridge.^[3]

Drummoyne is linked to Rozelle by the Victoria Road and Huntleys Point by the Gladesville Bridge. Victoria Road, one of Sydney's busiest roads, cuts through the heart of Drummoyne en route to the Sydney CBD. Victoria Road's presence makes the CBD transport hub extremely accessible, as numerous and frequent bus routes from Sydney's west merge in Drummoyne. However, it also leads to a bottleneck during the morning and evening peaks.

Regular Ferry and Rivercat services from the Wolseley Street wharf also provide a transport option for Drummoyne residents, servicing the Parramatta-City route.^[4]

Commercial area[link]

Drummoyne is mostly residential with some commercial developments, and still retains some of its industrial heritage. The main shopping strip is located along Victoria Road and the intersecting Lyons Road. There is also a small shopping plaza at this point. A shopping mall is located at Birkenhead Point, known as the Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre, featuring a Coles supermarket, specialty shops and factory outlet stores. The Canada Bay Civic Centre, the administration building for the City of Canada Bay, is located in Marlborough Street.

Drummoyne, New South Wales

Drummoyne is home to Drummoyne Oval, situated on the banks of the Parramatta River. In 1931, as a depression project, Drummoyne Oval was constructed on the site of a small oval which the Glebe and Balmain Rugby Union Clubs had used for junior matches since 1892. To ensure longevity of tenure, because there were not enough sporting grounds in Sydney, the Glebe Balmain Club decided to change its name to the Drummoyne District Rugby Football Club. It did so without giving up its long-held traditions, the scarlet jumpers of Glebe and its tag, "The Dirty Reds" and the black and gold of Balmain, colours still worn by today's players on their socks. The Drummoyne Rugby Club^[5] still plays at Drummoyne Oval as it has done for many years and is its permanent home. It is also a permanent home to Sydney first grade cricket side Balmain-UTS during the summer and occasionally hosts the NSW Blues Cricket side in the national ING Cup competition. With a carpet-like playing surface and large capacity (approximately 8,000), the oval is often used for cricket, Australian rules football and Rugby Union.

Drummoyne Olympic pool is located on the banks of Iron Cove. Filtered chlorine is separated from open water by 3 metres of poolside deck. The Bay Run is a popular route for runners and walkers.

In the 2006 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of Population and Housing, the population of Drummoyne stood at 10,388 people, 52.7% females and 47.3% males, with a median age of 38 years. 25.2% of the population was born overseas with England (4%), New Zealand (3%) and Italy (2.6%) the most common. The five strongest religious affiliations in the area were in descending order: Catholic (33.8%), Anglican (17.5%), no religion (15.8%), Eastern Orthodox (5.6%) and Presbyterian and Reformed (4.1%).^[1]

Drummoyne's population is wealthier than the Australian average, with a median weekly household income of $1,726, compared with $1,027 in Australia. The most common types of occupation for employed persons were Professionals (36.2%), Managers (21%), and Clerical and Administrative Workers (15.3%). 56.6% of the suburbs occupied private dwellings were family households, 28.7% were lone person households and 6.7% were group households.^[1]

Drummoyne is now part of the City of Canada Bay, a municipality formed in 2000 by the amalgamation of the municipalities of Drummoyne and Concord. It is part of the NSW Legislative Assembly electoral district of Drummoyne whose current member is John Sidoti MP.

It is in the Federal electorate of Reid and is represented in Federal parliament by John Murphy.

Ray White is a soul vocalist and rock and blues guitarist, best known as a member of Frank Zappa's touring ensembles.^[1] He was drafted into Zappa's band in the fall of 1976, being featured on rhythm guitar and vocals, forming a memorable vocal harmony partnership with Ike Willis on later tours in 1980 and 1984. White's vocals can be heard on Zappa in New York (March 1978), You Are What You Is (Sept 1981) as well as others. White can also be found on a The Torture Never Stops and Does Humor Belong in Music?; the former a DVD set in one of Zappa's last tours (without Ike Willis) and the latter being a VHS filmed at the pier in New York, the video features White and Ike Willis' signature vocal harmonies. According to Zappa, White, who was deeply religious, was uncomfortable with the atheistic views of some of the other band members, which led to his departure.

White has also worked with jam-oriented groups like KVHW, Don't Push the Clown and Umphrey's McGee since his contributions to the Zappa band, and has more recently worked with a variety of Michigan artists, including former Rare Earth drummer Bob Weaver, as well as members of the funk/fusion combo Generic Produce.

In summer 2007 Ray White joined Dweezil Zappa as a special guest for the Zappa Plays Zappa Tour.

Ray White appears on Ed Englerth's song "I Forgot Who I Am" for Ed's new CD Restless Ghost on BlueSideDownStudios Recordings in 2008.

Ray quit Zappa Plays Zappa via email according to a Dweezil Zappa blog post on 4/1/09.

Beginning December 27, 2009, Ray joined Project/Object on tour of the northeast and north central US, along with Ike Willis, Andre Cholmondeley, keyboardist Eric Svalgaard, bassist David Johnsen, and drummer Jim Ruffi.

Anthony "John" Sidoti MP, an Australian politician, is a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Drummoyne since 2011.^[1]

Early career and background[link]

The son of Italian migrants, Sidoti was raised in Sydney's inner west and educated at De La Salle College, Ashfield and the Ryde College of TAFE where he studied hospitality.^[1] From 1992 to 2008, Sidoti ran a function centre in Five Dock together with his family,^[2] and then was a part-time fruit merchant.^[1]

Elected as an Councillor to Burwood Council in 2008, Sidoti served as Mayor from 2009 up until the 2011 state election, when he stood down as mayor, remaining as a Councillor.^[2]

Political career[link]

At the 2011 state election, Sidoti was elected with a swing of 19.4 per cent and won the seat with 66.7 per cent of the vote on a two party preferred basis.^[3] In December 2010 the sitting member, Angela D'Amore, was disendorsed by Labor after an adverse finding against D'Amore by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Following her disendrosement, D'Amore remained in Parliament, sitting as an independent politician^[4][5] up until the 2011 election, when she chose not to seek re-election.^[3] Sidoti's main opponent was mayor of the City of Canada Bay, Angelo Tsirekas, representing Labor.
