Zhao Ziyang's Widow Passes Away
Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews Widow of late CCP chief Zhao Ziyang died in Beijing this week. Her obituary says she serenely passed away in the company of her family members who made Buddhist prayers with her. Her daughter Wang Yannan told our reporter that after her mother's encounter with Buddhism, her last wish was to just have a very simple funeral. Zhao Ziyang's ashes remain at his family's home. Their children are preparing to bury their parents together in their final resting place. Zhao's family recently sent text messages to relatives and friends, saying that Zhao's wife Liang Boqi passed away "with family members as company while solemnly making Buddhist prayers," in Beijing Hospital on the night of Dec. 25, at the ripe age of 95 years old. Zhao's daughter Wang Yannan told NTD a small mourning hall has been set up in their home for receiving relatives and friends. Wang Yannan: "Because mother's last wishes were to have the funeral be as simple as possible, and we respect her wish. We'll only have a family-style mourning without a formal funeral service. She'll directly be cremated, and then we will bring her ashes back home because my [father's ashes] are also there. Then we will bury their ashes together. " Because Zhao Ziyang sympathized with the student protesters during the Democracy Movement in 1989, he was dismissed from his position as Party Chief by ex-CCP leader Deng Xiaoping and later put under house arrest until he died. Hong Kong's Apple Daily reports that after Zhao Ziyang died in January 2005, CCP authorities prepared to put his ashes in an area reserved for department and bureau level officials in Beijing's Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery. Zhao's family thought such an arrangement was "obviously inconsistent with Zhao's identity" and did not agree it. Zhao's ashes have remained at home until now. Wang Yannan says her father's ashes have not been buried until now "because a good burial hasn't yet been decided on." Her siblings hope to bury the parents as soon as possible but are still negotiating where to bury them. The obituary issued by Liang Boqi's children says the mother serenely passed away in the midst of reciting a Buddhist prayer. During such a prayer, family members would together pray to have the person on their deathbed enjoy happiness by merit of praying to the Buddha and have them go to Buddha's heaven. Wang Yannan says her mother had encountered Buddhism in her later years. Wang Yannan: "I don't know [my father's faith], I don't think he held one. My mother knew of Buddhism. [The prayers we joined her in] are to cherish best wishes, praying with her to... some say so she can go to the heaven, or to have a peaceful future, or various other good wishes." Wang Yannan says her mother's health was very bad at the time of her father Zhao Ziyang's death. Liang Boqi had no idea of Zhao Ziyang's death even when she died. Wang Yannan: "We couldn't bear to let her receive such a hit. So this was not told to her. My mother soon had minor symptoms of dementia. Later she often forgot things. So we raise the issue. Yes, we hadn't told her all this time." However, Zhao Ziyang's secretary Bao Tong told NTD that when he visited Liang Boqi in 2008, he sensed that she knew of Zhao's death at heart. Bao Tong: "I think she knew of Zhao Ziyang's death. She was in a deep sorrow and had no need to talk about it. So she did not mention it with her children. When I visited her in 2008, she was still very clearminded. She remembered who I was and talked to me. Some particular things she spoke of made me understand that she knew Zhao's death very early." From Bao Tong's analysis, Wang Yannan says she thinks that her parents must be connected at heart. Wang Yannan: "Bao Tong may be right. I think they might be telepathic with each other, or connected at heart." After Zhao Ziyang was promoted to being CCP chief, his wife Liang Boqi reportedly had no Beijing hukou (a registered residential certificate) despite his family living in Zhongnanhai. Wang Yannan clarifies this point. Wang Yannan: "She had a hukou. Usually, she may have had a collective hukou, for governmental department employees. But afterwards, her certificate ought to have been transferred to a home address, the local street's administrative unit." After Zhao Ziyang was ousted, he was then under house arrest in Zhongnanhai. Later, he was relocated to No. 6 Fuqiang Hutong and Dengshikou West street, Beijing. "No. 6 Fuqiang Hutong" was then changed into a "military controlled area." Zhao spent 16 years here under house arrest until he died on Jan. 17 , 2005.- published: 28 Dec 2013

Zhao Ziyang Still Missed by People Even Now
Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews January 17 is the ninth anniversary of the death of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) General Secretary Zhao Ziyang. In the past nine years, people have gone to Beijing No. 6 Fuqiang Hutong to honor him at the time of his birth and death. Why do people miss this old man even though he was under house arrest by Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin for 15 years? On January 7, NTD interviewed researcher Mr. Yao Jianfu from the Rural Policy Research Office of the CCP Central Committee. He met Zhao Ziyang during his house arrest. Let's see the details. On January 17 2005, Zhao Ziyang died. A 85-year-old man who passed away peacefully after 15 years of house arrest. He is also the former CCP General Secretary persecuted by two generations of the top leaders because of opposition to the "Tiananmen massacre". In the past 8 years, people just came to No 6 Fuqiang Hutong, Zhao Ziyang's former home by Beijing Dongcheng District Wangfujing St. to commemorate him on his birthday and anniversary. They always got beaten up by national security. 82-year-old researcher Yao Jianfu from CCP Central Rural Policy Research Office was one of few people to pass the check to meet Zhao Ziyang. Yao Jianfu: "He would rather bear suffering by himself to pursue the truth even under under dictatorship rule and his actions are missed by people.. It's rare among CCP leaders and Zhao Ziyang just set a good example. The 1989 "Tiananmen Square student democracy movement" became a nationwide anti-corruption protest after Jiang Zemin then the Secretary of CCP Shanghai Municipal Committee closed down the World Economic Herald. According to the exposed evidence inside and outside the system, the CCP refused all political reform and dialogue with students to maintain one-party rule. At 4:50am on May 19, 1989, Zhao Ziyang went to Tiananmen Square to visit the students on hunger strike sympathetically. "I feel so sorry that we're too late. You may criticize us and I am here not to ask you to forgive. I want to say that the students have become very weak since it has been 7 days hunger strike, you can't continue." On the morning of June 4 1989, the CCP military shot the unarmed students and citizens and rolled the tanks to Beijing Tiananmen Square, Chang An Street at the main intersections under Deng Xiaoping's command. In late June, Zhao Ziyang was released from his position as CCP general secretary due to opposing Deng Xiaoping's decision and placed under house arrest. Yao Jianfu: "He chose to be against the inhumanity which Deng Xiaoping committed against humanity in history, against the Chinese people and human beings. There is no retroactive term for inhumane crimes and he will certainly be on trial by court ethics, history courts and international court in the future. " In 1997 after Deng Xiaoping's death, Zhao Ziyang wrote twice to the CCP requiring a re-evaluation of "June 4th" and hoping to recover his freedom. At the time, Jiang Zemin became the head of the CCP favored by Deng Xiaoping even though he was highly criticized by Zhao Ziyang for cleaning up the "World Economic Herald". Jiang Zemin forbad Zhao Ziyang to meet friends at home and limit his activity scope when he was in power. In addition to house arrest, Zhao Ziyang was only allowed to be active at the hospital and a suburban golf course. Jiang Zemin also told the new Standing Committee of the Political Bureau not to rehabilitate "June 4th" student movement when he passed over leadership in 2002. Zhao Ziyang was under house arrest until his death. Mainland human rights lawyer Pu Zhiqiang participated in the "June 4th" student movement and said Zhao's tragedy gives inspiration. Pu Zhiqiang: "I admire Zhao Ziyang because he is at least a real person at that moment and different from many previous CCP general secretaries. He didn't betray principles throughout the rest of his life under house arrest. His tragic fate may also indicate that the so-called healthy force is there even it is a sad thing." In early 2005, shortly after the death of Zhao Ziyang, his daughter Wang Yannan lamented and complained "He is finally free".- published: 08 Jan 2014

Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews January 17 will be the ninth anniversary of the death of former CCP General Secretary Zhao Ziyang. Zhao was forced to step down, and was placed under house arrest for the last 15 years of his life. This happened because he sympathized with the students during the June 4 Tiananmen Square massacre, and was against military repression. The Chinese Communist regime's fear of Zhao Ziyang did not disappear after his death. The authorities try to reduce public attention on Zhao Ziyang, especially at this time of year. Zhao Ziyang was born on October 17, 1919, Henan Province. Zhao was Premier from 1980 to 1987, and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from 1987 to 1989. During June 4 1989, Zhao Ziyang was dismissed from all his posts, for being sympathetic towards the students. He was put under house arrest for 15 years until his death on January 17, 2005. Observers believe that he is an "iconic figure" of the modern democratic movement in China. He was a rare maverick during the history of the CCP. Bao Tong, former political secretary of Zhao Ziyang: "This is because he was preoccupied with people. People thought highly of him. He believed the military shouldn't fire on its own citizens, and was against armed suppression." 82-year-old Mr. Bao served as Zhao's political secretary from 1980 to 1989. He was a committee member for the 13th Party Congress, and Director of the General Secretary Office of the CCP. Bao Tong was also imprisoned for seven years after June 4. He was released in 1996, and has been under house arrest ever since. The Chinese authorities have thus far not changed their attitude towards Zhao Ziyang. Mr Bao said that the military crackdown on the students is a sin of the Chinese authorities. The Chinese people have a clear perception of June 4, where students demanded democracy and anti-corruption. Former CCP leader Deng Xiaoping spoke about Zhao Ziyang in 1988. Zhao was described as being engaged in liberalization, and would step down before long. After the gunshots were heard on June 4, 'liberalist' Zhao Ziyang was finally dismissed by Deng Xiaoping. Zhao Ziyang did not appear in public, after he visited students on hunger strike in Tiananmen Square on May 19, 1989. Hong Kong's Apple Daily newspaper reported that Zhao had sent a letter to the CCP 15th Party Congress. This requested the re-evaluation of June 4, after Deng Xiaoping's death in 1997. Then leader Jiang Zemin undertook punitive retaliation, putting Zhao Ziyang under house arrest, and banning him from seeing visitors. Bao Tong: "I think it is right for Zhao Ziyang to refuse to confess any wrongs, because he has done nothing wrong. Deng Xiaoping said that you can be an official at any level if you come out to admit mistakes. Zhao Ziyang said he had made no mistakes. If Zhao Ziyang admitted he was wrong, that was to say that firing on people in Tiananmen Square was correct. If it was correct, then they would do it in the past, and in the future." The commemoration of Zhao Ziyang is a reflection on him, and also dissatisfaction with current CCP regime. Bao Tong: "I think that there should be fairness and justice in a aw abiding country. If you can find things that are unfair and unjust, then the country itself, the government itself, and the leaders are probably not fair and judicial. I believe you can get fairness and justice under a judicial system." Bao Tong believes that it's up to the new leaders to solve this problem. Will they have ability to give fairness and justice back to the country, to the people. Bao Tong: "I hope China can become country where information is free, and not controlled. Freedom of information would not only influence Mr. Zhao Ziyang, but influence our whole country. It will not only impact now, but impact the future. I hope people can publish, speak and exchange ideas freely in our country. It's more like a prison when people can't speak and communicate freely in a country." Even now, the Chinese regime still tries to minimise public attention on Zhao, especially this anniversary. In spite of this, there are still a lot of Chinese people who visit his former home to mourn, bringing wreaths and baskets. They mourn for a former official who stood on the people's side during the confrontation between them and the CCP. 《神韵》2014世界巡演新亮点 http://www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org/- published: 17 Jan 2014

Old Photo of Hu Yaobang and Zhao Ziyang Exposed
Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews The former Chinese Communist Party (CCP) General Secretaries Hu Yaobang and Zhao Ziyang were removed because their minds were relatively open. Especially the topic of Zhao Ziyang and 'June 4th' are big taboo subjects for the authorities. However few days ago, an old photo which has both of them was displayed publicly by the authorities, also Wang Yannan, the daughter of Zhao Ziyang was shown in CCP media in a high profile photo. Are these signals showing that the CCP will have a huge political reform? Let's see the opinions of Zhao Ziyang's relatives and his former think-tank! The HK Mingpao reported that the media center of CCP 18th Congress opened on November 1 in Beijing Media Center. On the second floor, the "Xinhua News Agency" exhibits some photos which include an old picture of the CCP 12th Congress in 1982. In it, the 85-year-old Ye Jianying was entered into the Politburo Standing Committee, the General Secretary Hu Yaobang stooped to talk with him, Deng Xiaoping and Zhao Ziyang were behind them. The rare photo of Zhao Ziyang was exposed attracted the attention of the outside world immediately. Wang Zhihua is the son-in-law of Zhao Ziyang, and he is the husband of Wang Yannan. He said that he hasn't received any information from the authorities, but he thought the photo delivers some kind of message. Zhao's son-in-law Wang Zhihua: "The fact the 18th Congress' media center published this photo is at least a message." Showing Zhao Ziyang's photo is welcomed by Yao Jianfu, from the former think-tank of Zhao Ziyang. Zhao's former think-tank member Yao Jianfu: "I feel that standing on a historical point, it's normal to show their photos. Now is the 18th Congress, it's normal to publish the photos of each speaker. It's in line with the reality of history." However, Yao Jianfu thought such an action doesn't mean that the CCP will reform. Yao Jianfu: "Respect for history is different from reform. As for the meaning of the photo, let's analyze it after reading the report of the 18th Congress. I will not infer it because they are two different things, and don't have a reason-result relationship." The "June 4th" incident has been treated as a "minefield" by the CCP. Zhao Ziyang sympathized with the students and opposed the force used against the students. But he was dismissed from all his positions inside and outside the party and was under house arrest for 15 years until he died just because of it. In addition, two days before the publishing of the photo, "Beijing News" reported a full-page interview with Zhao's Daughter, Wang Yannan in a high profile. It used pictures, combined with texts, talked about Wang Yannan's experience and achievement in a cultural relics auction. But just recently on June 4th 2012, Wang Yannan told "Voice of America" that the injustice of "June 4th" hasn't been redressed for 23 years, which is simply ridiculous. She said: "every conscientious person on earth, each Chinese knows well what 'June 4th'means; there's a barrier put up by the CCP." She called on Hu, Wen and Xi to redress "June 4th" as soon as possible. The British "Financial Times" reported previously that the CCP Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has mentioned three times in the CCP senior officials secret meetings that the CCP should redress "June 4th" incident. During these days leading up to the 18th Congress, CCP's media has released info on political reform many times. Therefore, are all these facts a coincidence? Or is the information being released intentionally by the highly political sensitive CCP? Wang Zhihua: "The authorities didn't make contact with us by any means which is very clear. Because those things aren't transparent in China, and everybody is guessing. If the CCP will undertake political reform, it's not an issue of one or two people, but a huge and very deep problem. It certainly will have to be taken step by step. Based on the situation you just mentioned, it's difficult for me to judge because I haven't heard anything from official channels." In October, during Zhao Ziyang's 93 year anniversary, Hong Kong media reported that the CCP's suppression of the local protests is relatively looser than usual. But Wang Zhihua said restriction still exists. Wang Zhihua: "It's sure that somebody wants to come but can't, like Bao Tong. There's restriction. It's sure that some people are not allowed to come, especially during sensitive days like 'June 4th'anniversary, the 18th Congress, etc." As for Hu Yaobang, the BBC reported on November 1 that Hu Deping, the son of Hu Yaobang told a reporter of "International Herald Tribune" that in fact, CCP is fascist. 《神韵》2011世界巡演新亮点 http://www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org/- published: 06 Nov 2012

Zhao Ziyang and China's Political Future
What legacies have previous reformers like Zhao Ziyang left to today's China? Does China have feasible political alternatives to today's repressive 'market Leninism' and corrupt 'state capitalism'? Does Zhao's legacy indicate an alternative to the past and for the future? For those who are familiar with the development of Chinese politics since the reform years, Zhao is now widely regarded as a major architect of the nation's profound transition. His contributions to China's post-Mao development are rich and multi faceted, including those on rural and urban economic reforms extending to accountable governance, liberal policies concerning domestic affairs and China's foreign relations. Featuring contributions from leading experts in the field such as Richard Baum and Xiaonong Cheng, this book explores the historical development of China's political reform issues, and how his political legacies are relevant to China's political development since the 1980s to the future. Using recently translated recollection articles by veteran reformers who worked with Zhao in the 1980s, like Du Runsheng, An Zhiwen, Li Rui, Bao Tong, Zhao Ziyang and China's Political Future is a valuable contribution for students and researchers interested in the Chinese politics, Asian politics and political development in Asia.—Routledge- published: 29 Jan 2014

Internet Censorship Tightens on Anniversary of Zhao Ziyang's Death
Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews Nine years after former Chinese premier Zhao Ziyang's death, many people still visit his former residence to pay their condolences. While many others also pay tribute online, the regime is further tightening its censorship. This year also marks 25 years after the June 4 Massacre. Many Chinese people express their concern about the regime's attitude towards the suppression of the student movement in Tiananmen Square, and of Falun Gong. According to a report by Hong Kong based Apple Daily, Zhao Ziyang's former residence in Beijing was busy with visitors on January 17. They came to pay their condolences to the former Chinese premier. Wang Zhihua, Zhao Ziyang's son-in-law, said the atmosphere was better than in previous years. Former CCP General Secretary Zhao Ziyang was under house arrest for more than 15 years, until he passed away on January 17, 2005. He was arrested after publically opposing the military crackdown on the student protests in 1989. His widow, Liang Boqi, also just died in Beijing on December 25, but no official announcement was made. On the ninth anniversary of Zhao Ziyang's death, photos of he and his wife were place in his study. Many people sent flowers to the house. The walls were covered with lamenting poetry from acquaintances, such as Zhao's former secretary Bao Tong, and Hong Kong intellectual Dong Qiao. Visitors included 'Tiananmen Mothers' organizer Ding Zilin, It also included the consciencious medic Jiang Yanyong, who petitioned the Chinese regime to vindicate the victims. Former Central Rural Policy Research Fellow Yao Jianfu, and former Office of the Secretary of the Central Committee Wu Jiaxiang attended. Zhao's assistant political secretary Wu Wei, and writer Bing Xin's daughter Wu Qing visited. Wu Wei, Zhao's political assistant secretary: "I went there to make a salute, and signed my name in the visitor's book. I expressed my sympathy to the families, and nothing else. That is normal, and typical every year." However, people wishing to conduct such a normal and typical activity of condolence have been subject to harassment and suppression from the authorities. Many who would like to pay their condolence were put under house arrest, or even beaten and arrested. Activist Hu Jia was intercepted by the police and put under house arrest on Friday, on his way to offer condolences to Zhao Ziyang. He told Radio Free Asia that house arrest has become the norm. It will only stop when there is true democracy, rule of law, and human rights in China. This type of lawless suppression continues to exist throughout China. In addition, political commentator He Jiawei was warned by local police not to become involved in any commemorations. He Jiawei had previously been interrogated by the regime for participating in the commemoration hunger strike of the 25 anniversary of the June 4 Massacre. He Jiawei: "I think this is a routine measure of the regime. The shaky environment frightens the regime. I believe this dictatorship system is at its end." He Jiawei also points out that the so-called "vindication" simply serves the Communist Party as its political means. It is like saying someone broke your leg or killed you, and years later, it simply said to your family, "sorry, I hit the wrong person, and killed the wrong person." He Jiawei believes the vindication is extremely cunning and shameless. He Jiawei: "Especially on the June 4 incident and the persecution of Falun Gong, vindication is not right. It is a criminal act that needs to be punished. The student movement and Falun Gong are two key issues in China to be resolved. Once these two key points are resolved, both Xi and Li will have an eased leadership. They need to abandon the old route of the CCP, and completely negate the CCP." The Epoch Times reported that although some people were able to pay condolences at Zhao Ziyang's former residence, online memorial posts were quickly deleted. This even included simple phrases such as: "The ageless Ziyang!" and "Today is the 9th anniversary of Mr. Zhao's death. Light a candle for condolence!" Yu Ying, Vice-Chairman of National Real Estate Manager Alliance angrily wrote: "Delete it! History has repeatedly told people: What you delete will certain be what we pursue tomorrow." 《神韵》2014世界巡演新亮点 http://www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org/- published: 20 Jan 2014
