Joel Gurin: "Open Data Now"
Open Data Now looks at the incredible applications of the Open Data movement for the public and private sectors. Joel Gurin, a nationally recognized leader in consumer information and website development, has written the first comprehensive book on the emerging power of Open Data. He examines applications and trends for Big Data in the public and private sectors, among them: Academic Spring - a revolt pushing for scientific research to be made free and public; Data-Driven Reporting -- the next Woodward & Bernstein will be crunching open data using new techniques; Data Detectives - In the wake of the financial crisis, data will become more transparent and structured; Wind Finders -- Weather data has helped wind energy companies build where wind patterns are optimal. "We can expect to see more businesses large and small grow by using Open Data; more high-value datasets released by government at all levels; more ways to analyze the data for market insights, brand management, and predicting tools; and more research of all kinds using open innovation." This is Open Data Now. About the Author: Joel Gurin (New York), as EVP of Consumers Union, launched and grew Consumer Reports' website, www.ConsumerReports.org; under his leadership it became the world's largest information-based paid-subscription site, with 3M+ subscribers. In December 2009, Gurin joined the Obama Administration as Chief of the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission. He served as Chair of the White House Task Force on Smart Disclosure, which studied how the government can provide Open Data to help consumers make choices in complex markets including health care, financial services, education, and energy. Currently he is a Senior Advisor at New York University's GovLab. They have launched The Open Data 500, a list of how freely available government data is being put to profitable use in the private sector. This list of 500 will be highlighted by President Obama in an announcement scheduled for early Q1 2014. "In May 2013 the Obama Administration announced a new Open Data Policy that mandates the release of most federal data as usable open data going forward.... The Open Data 500 will provide the first comprehensive census of American companies using federal data and the results of a survey showing what datasets they are using and how." More about Gurin is at the link: http://thegovlab.org/understanding-open-data-with-joel-gurin/ Here is Gurin describing Open Data: http://vimeo.com/77816504- published: 01 Apr 2014

New Copernicus satellite launch to provide climate change data
, a Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/1bmWO8h The first of six satellites that will supply environmental and security data is set to launch tomorrow. As part of the multi-billion-euro Copernicus Earth Observation Project, the satellite will be sent into Earth's orbit from Europe's spaceport in French Guiana. It will be used to monitor sea ice, oil spills and land use, and to respond to emergencies like floods and earthquakes. The satellite carries an advanced radar instrument which will provide high-quality images of the Earth's surface. Copernicus could also offer commercial opportunities for us on earth - like delivering data to farmers on soil moisture or pest infestation or helping oil companies decide where to drill new wells. According to the European Space Agency, the mission will image the entire Earth every six days and has a minimum lifespan of seven years. Report by Claire Lomas. The Art of Data Visualization | Off Book | PBS Digital Studios
Humans have a powerful capacity to process visual information, skills that date far back in our evolutionary lineage. And since the advent of science, we have employed intricate visual strategies to communicate data, often utilizing design principles that draw on these basic cognitive skills. In a modern world where we have far more data than we can process, the practice of data visualization has gained even more importance. From scientific visualization to pop infographics, designers are increasingly tasked with incorporating data into the media experience. Data has emerged as such a critical part of modern life that it has entered into the realm of art, where data-driven visual experiences challenge viewers to find personal meaning from a sea of information, a task that is increasingly present in every aspect of our information-infused lives. Beatsurfing - The Organic MIDI Controller Builder - Official Teaser
BEATSURFING - THE ORGANIC MIDI CONTROLLER BUILDER
http://beatsurfing.net
It allows you to draw a 3-dimensional controller and use it in two different and complementary ways. You can tap it like you would with your regular MPC or any other beatmaking device, but the best and most innovative use you can make of it is definitely by surfing your fingers along routes, colliding with objects, triggering samples or effects. It’s all about movement, and bringing back this intuitive way to make music.
It can control any MIDI-enabled device (Software, Hardware, or even selected iPad apps through Virtual MIDI), features a very intuitive in-app editing system and integrates seemlessly in any existing Studio or Live setup.
Objects Behaviours can be set to link objects together and multiply the available commands on the surface of the iPad.
It’s been developed by Herrmutt Lobby & Yaniv De Ridder.
http://facebook.com/herrmuttlobby
It’s based on concepts Herrmutt Lobby developed for Hardware MIDI controllers (like the Beatfader and the MIDI scratch devices).
Released by VLEK as VLEKAPP08

Draw your own controller
Work with the Controller you need, not the one you were given. Simply draw it on the screen with lines, polygons, circles and faders. Size, color, orientation and 3-Dimensional location are all yours to choose.
>> LEARN MORE: http://beatsurfing.net/draw
Surf!
Use the full potential of the iPad touchscreen: You can tap on the screen, but you better add the Surfing to your production and performance skills to integrate more of that human feel in your music.
>> LEARN MORE: http://beatsurfing.net/surf
Link any MIDI device
Dj, VJ, Production softwares, Hardware devices, and even selected iPad apps: you can route BEATSURFING to anything that allows for MIDI.
>> LEARN MORE: http://beatsurfing.net/link
Objects Behaviours
Each object of your controller can be set to control the others. It creates a system of objects that allow you to add much more to a controller than what meets the eye.
>> LEARN MORE: http://beatsurfing.net/behaviours
Intuitive In-App editing
Forget about separated editing software, lenghty changes and whatnot. You can swap between the EDIT and PLAY modes at the tap of a finger. All your objects even remain playable when they’re be re-arranged!

POLL: Americans Feel More Violated by Government Data Collection Than Private Data Collection
"Americans make a distinction between government collection of personal data and private companies collecting personal data because they understand that private companies are using this information to sell them things, and the government is using this information to spy on them," says Reason-Rupe polling director Emily Ekins. "And they think that government spying on them is worse." Ekins sat down Reason TV to discuss the portion of the results from the April Reason-Rupe poll focused on private and government data collection. While a 2013 Reason-Rupe poll found that Americans actually trust the IRS and the NSA to protect their data more than they trust companies like Facebook to do so, this round of polling dug deeper and found that people tend to believe that government agencies are more likely to violate their privacy. Watch the video above to hear Ekins delve deeper into these results. For full poll results, check out reason.com/poll. Approximately 1 minute long. Produced by Zach Weissmueller.
