Critically-Endangered Black Rhino Born at Lincoln Park Zoo
Lincoln Park Zoo is thrilled to report the birth of an Eastern black rhinoceros calf on August 26. The 60-pound bundle of joy is the first offspring for mom Kapuki and dad Maku, as well as the first rhino to be born at Lincoln Park Zoo since 1989. The baby is spending his early days doing what babies do -- nursing, sleeping, and sticking close to mom. Eastern black rhinos are critically endangered in their native Africa due to poaching, which makes this birth even more significant. Critically Endangered Baby Tortoise Eating
Critically Endangered Baby Tortoise Eating
Anthony, breeder at theTurtleRoom.com, shares some exciting footage of a hatchling Spider Tortoise (Pyxis arachnoides) eating. The Common Spider Tortoise, Pyxis arachnoides arachnoides, is a very small terrestrial species from Madagascar that has a dark carapace with an attractive, yellow, "spider-web" pattern. This subspecies of Spider Tortoise has a plastron which is free from markings, and has a hinge allowing it to close completely. They appreciate an extensive list of fruits and vegetables, as well as mushrooms. Interestingly, Spider Tortoises endure extremely varying temperatures, between 43 and 108 degrees in their natural range, as well as extremely dry and wet seasons, which can be difficult to emulate in captivity. Spiders should never be kept with any other species, however, they do not seem to require as much room as other tortoise species. Pyxis arachnoides arachnoides is listed on the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered, which is only one small step from becoming extinct in the wild. This is due to slash and burn agriculture in native habitats and the large of amount of illegal capture for the pet trade and, at times, consumption of these small tortoises as a reaction to the decreasing numbers of the Radiated Tortoise family.- published: 13 Feb 2014

Gorilla Doctors Rescue Critically Endangered Golden Monkey in Rwanda
An endangered golden monkey leaves the safety of Volcanoes National Park (VNP) to raid crops in a village. After the monkey becomes trapped in a local's home, the Gorilla Doctors arrived to transport him back to the park. The Gorilla Doctors are dedicated to saving the lives of the critically-endangered mountain and Grauer's gorillas of Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC through health care. Our international team of veterinarians is the only group providing these animals with direct, hands-on care in the wild. www.gorilladoctors.org- published: 16 Jan 2014
