"Bad to Me" is a song John Lennon wrote (credited to Lennon/McCartney) for Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas while John was on holiday in Spain in 1963. Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas released their recording of the song in 1963 and it became their first #1 UK hit. Paul McCartney was present during the recording session at Abbey Road Studios. The single would be released in the USA the following year, and become a top-ten hit there, reaching number 9. It became the first Lennon/McCartney composition to reach the US Top 40 for an artist other than the Beatles.
Bootlegs exist of Lennon's original demo of the song, which was recorded on 31 May 1963.
Billy J. Kramer (born William Howard Ashton, 19 August 1943, Bootle, Liverpool, England) is a British Invasion/Merseybeat singer. In the 1960s he was managed by Brian Epstein, who also managed The Beatles, and he recorded several original Lennon and McCartney compositions.
He grew up as the youngest of seven siblings and attended the St George of England Secondary School, Bootle. He then took up an engineering apprenticeship with British Railways and in his spare time played rhythm guitar in a group he had formed himself, before switching to become a vocalist. The performing name Kramer was chosen at random from a telephone directory. It was John Lennon's suggestion that the "J" be added to the name to further distinguish him by adding a 'tougher edge'. Kramer soon came to the attention of Brian Epstein, ever on the look-out for new talent to add to his expanding roster of local artists. Kramer turned professional but his then backing group, the Coasters, were less keen, so Epstein sought out the services of a Manchester-based group, The Dakotas, a combo then backing Pete MacLaine.
Even then, The Dakotas would not join Kramer without a recording contract of their own. Once in place, the deal was set and both acts signed to Parlophone under George Martin. Collectively, they were named Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas to keep their own identities within the act. Once the Beatles broke through, the way was paved for a tide of Merseybeat and Kramer was offered the chance to cover "Do You Want to Know a Secret?", first released by the Beatles on their own debut album, Please Please Me. The track had been turned down by Shane Fenton (later known as Alvin Stardust) who was looking for a career-reviving hit.
Success came with record producer George Martin, when the Beatles' penned song "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" became a number two UK Singles Chart hit in 1963, and was backed by another tune otherwise unreleased by The Beatles, "I'll Be on My Way".
After this impressive breakthrough, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas enjoyed yet another another hit single:"Bad to Me" c/w "I Call Your Name", with the single reaching #1. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
Billy J Kramer continues to enjoy world wide popularity as a singer, and he tours regularly in both Europe and the United States.

The Dakotas (band)
The Dakotas is a group of British musicians, which initially convened as a backing band in Manchester, England. However, they are most closely associated with the singer Billy J. Kramer, a Liverpudlian who was the lead vocalist for the group during the 1960s. In the USA they are regarded as part of the British invasion.
Career
The group's name arose from an engagement at the Plaza Ballroom in Oxford Street, Manchester. Their manager asked the group to return the next week dressed as Indians and called the Dakotas, founded in September 1960 by rhythm guitarist Robin MacDonald, with Bryn Jones on lead guitar; Tony Bookbinder (Elkie Brooks older brother,also known as Tony Mansfield) on drums, and Ian Fraser on bass. Ray Jones joined the band as bassist replacing Ian Fraser, and Mike Maxfield joined the band in February 1962 as lead guitarist replacing Bryn Jones after being with a Manchester band called the Coasters. The group first backed Pete MacLaine (February 1962 – January 1963). However, Brian Epstein, who was managing Billy J. Kramer, made the Dakotas an offer to become Kramer's backing band, which they accepted. Epstein insisted the name was Billy J Kramer with The Dakotas, not "and". The group and Billy J Kramer then went to Hamburg to perfect their act.

The Dakotas
The Dakotas is a collective term for the U.S. states of North Dakota and South Dakota. It has been used historically to describe the Dakota Territory, and is still used for the collective heritage, culture, geography, fauna, sociology, the economy, and even cuisine among the two states.
Overview
The two states combined have a population of 1,592,657, slightly less than Idaho, ranking at 40th place. The number of inhabitants increased by 133,430 from the year before. The Dakotas have a total area of 147,878 square miles (383,177 square kilometres), which rank 4th among U.S. states, right before Montana. The two states also have a population density of 9.8 per sq. mi (3.8 per km2).
The name "Dakota" comes from the Tipi Sapa, a Native American clan that is a branch of the Sioux nation.
A sub-region of the Frontier Strip, the Dakotas are also within the Midwestern United States, with the western portion in the High Plains. The PBS miniseries New Perspectives on the West noted historically important areas within the Dakotas, including the Black Hills, the town of Deadwood, Fort Buford, Standing Rock Reservation and Wounded Knee. The Upper Missouri River and the Upper Missouri River Valley are important geological features in the area, as well.

Billy J. Kramer (born William Howard Ashton, 19 August 1943, Bootle, Liverpool, England) is a British Invasion/Merseybeat singer. In the 1960s he was managed by Brian Epstein, who also managed The Beatles, and he recorded several original Lennon and McCartney compositions.
He grew up as the youngest of seven siblings and attended the St George of England Secondary School, Bootle. He then took up an engineering apprenticeship with British Railways and in his spare time played rhythm guitar in a group he had formed himself, before switching to become a vocalist. The performing name Kramer was chosen at random from a telephone directory. It was John Lennon's suggestion that the "J" be added to the name to further distinguish him by adding a 'tougher edge'. Kramer soon came to the attention of Brian Epstein, ever on the look-out for new talent to add to his expanding roster of local artists. Kramer turned professional but his then backing group, the Coasters, were less keen, so Epstein sought out the services of a Manchester-based group, The Dakotas, a combo then backing Pete MacLaine.
Even then, The Dakotas would not join Kramer without a recording contract of their own. Once in place, the deal was set and both acts signed to Parlophone under George Martin. Collectively, they were named Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas to keep their own identities within the act. Once the Beatles broke through, the way was paved for a tide of Merseybeat and Kramer was offered the chance to cover "Do You Want to Know a Secret?", first released by the Beatles on their own debut album, Please Please Me. The track had been turned down by Shane Fenton (later known as Alvin Stardust) who was looking for a career-reviving hit.
Success came with record producer George Martin, when the Beatles' penned song "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" became a number two UK Singles Chart hit in 1963, and was backed by another tune otherwise unreleased by The Beatles, "I'll Be on My Way".
After this impressive breakthrough, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas enjoyed yet another another hit single:"Bad to Me" c/w "I Call Your Name", with the single reaching #1. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
Billy J Kramer continues to enjoy world wide popularity as a singer, and he tours regularly in both Europe and the United States.

From the 1970's 1980's. A live Radio Broadcast of the Dakota Band at the Venus Nightclub in Dayton Ohio. Cover of Devil went down to Georgia. Singer Dave Carroll (Mullikin), guitar Jim Conti, Bass Phil ?, also bass Bob Donisi and Dave's brother, Charles Mullikin. Drums Don Wood, also drums Matt Jordan. Fiddle and keyboards Karen (Tiemann) Highman. We opened for Alabama at this club right before they got huge! Found the pictures and old cassette in the basement. Recorded on cheapo cassette set to one side of the stage so sound is poor. But the nostalgia is still there!

The Dakotas are seen here thrilling a packed house with their rendition of "Let's Work Together" in August 2012 at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester. The Dakotas' name has always been synonymous with that of singer Billy J Kramer, with hits like "Do You Want to Know a Secret", "Little Children" and "Bad to Me".
Over the years The Dakotas have evolved into a powerful band in their own right, performing at many acclaimed live shows all over the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States of America. A couple of years ago, the band took the decision to revert back to their original format of a five piece band, which now comprises of Ronnie Ravey, lead vocals. Toni Baker, keyboards/vocals Alan Clare, lead guitar/vocals. Marius Jones, bass guitar/vocals and Pete Hilton, drums. The inclusion of a lead singer/frontman in Ronnie Ravey has given the band, whose sublime musicianship is unquestionable, a much more dynamic stage presence which thrills audiences both young and not so young and has them on their feet wherever the Dakotas perform.
The song "Let's Work Together" (or "Let's Stick Together" as it was originally called) was written in about 1962 as a blues number by a chap called Wilbert Harrison, though it failed to chart. He rereleased it in 1969 having rejigged some of the lyrics and changed the title to "Let's Work Together" this time he had a Billboard top one hundred hit - his first chart appearance since his 1959 hit "Kansas City".
"Let's Work Together" has been covered by and been successful for the likes of Canned Heat and was without doubt their biggest selling single, reaching number 2 here in the UK and reaching number one in 31 other countries!
Bryan Ferry, he of Roxy music also had great success with "Let's Stick Together", scoring his highest solo chart position of number four in 1976. Other great Luminaries who have recorded versions of this song include Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, George Thorogood and Nina Simone, who also included the song in one of her concerts .... So The Dakotas are in good company and as their evolution continues I for one, am looking forward to the journey.

Recordings of "Bad to Me" as the Beatles may have performed it are available on the 1989 album by Bas Muys entitled Secret Songs: Lennon & McCartney and on the 1998 release It's Four You by the Australian tribute band The Beatnix.

"Bad to Me" is a song John Lennon wrote (credited to Lennon–McCartney) for Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas while on holiday in Spain. Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas released their recording of the song in 1963 and it became their first number 1 in the UK Singles Chart. Paul McCartney was present during the recording session at Abbey Road Studios. The single would be released in the US the following year, and become a top-ten hit there, reaching number 9. It became one of the first occasions a Lennon–McCartney composition made the US Top 40 recorded by an artist other than the Beatles (the first being "A World Without Love" by Peter & Gordon).
Bootlegs exist of Lennon's original demo of the song, which was recorded on 31 May 1963. An acoustic demo from the same era was released on iTunes in December 2013 on the album The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963.
Terry Black released a version of the song on his 1965 debut album, Only 16.
Graham Parker recorded a version of the song for the 2003 album Lost Songs of Lennon & McCartney, new versions of 17 Lennon–McCartney songs that were originally released by other artists. Leif Garrett also recorded a version of the song for his self-titled debut album. Finnish rock band Hurriganes covered this song in their third album, Crazy Days.
Recordings of "Bad to Me" as the Beatles may have performed it are available on the 1989 album by Bas Muys entitled Secret Songs: Lennon & McCartney and on the 1998 release It's Four You by the Australian tribute band The Beatnix.

Singer Dave Carroll (Mullikin), guitar Jim Conti, Bass Phil ?, also bass Bob Donisi and Dave's brother, Charles Mullikin. Drums Don Wood, also drums Matt Jordan. Fiddle and keyboards Karen (Tiemann) Highman. We opened for Alabama at this club right before they got huge! Found the pictures and old cassette in the basement. Recorded on cheapo cassette set to one side of the stage so sound is poor. But the nostalgia is still there!

It was an extraordinary night of music that won't soon be forgotten by those in attendance. Any description I attempt here will fall utterly short of describing the experience of seeing these guys live.
Their unparalleled skills as individual artists is only eclipsed by the pure magic that happens when they perform together. If you are a lover of great music and great art then you must jump at the opportunity to see these gentlemen when they come your way.

Leo & Dihl Bennink have a long musical history behind them,both were members of two famous Dutch groups in the sixties Dihl(Tee Set)
Leo(The Motions)in 1996 they got the idea to join together and started the legendary guitar group The Black Albinos with Hoss on fenderbass,
It makes this band a true time capsule of one of the best guitar talents/bands in this world around.
Leo began as a guitar-player in 1959 with the Indo-Rock groups THE REAL RHYTHM TEENS and THE ROCKING SENSATION BOYS. In 1962 (17 years old) he started a professional career as a member of THE TWANGIES and he played for several years in Western Germany. His last contract in Germany was with THE REBELS, in which he met drummer Leo Kappé. Back in Holland he played guitar in such guitar-groups as RENE & ALLIGATORS, THE SPECIALS, THE SPECIAL FIVE and THE BLACK ALBINO'S. With THE SPECIAL FIVE he recorded Silly Silly and it's his most remembered instrumental. At that time Leo also was the first guitarist in Holland, who could play all the Mosrite stuff from Nokie Edwards. In 1966 his career got a lift when he was a member of Dutch beat groups as THE JAY JAYS and THE MOTIONS. For THE JAY JAYS LP he also recorded Cruncher (from Ventures LP Surfing). With THE MOTIONS he toured all over Europe and even did concerts is the USA together with ERIC BURDON, FRANK ZAPPA, ALICE COOPER and THE MONKEES. In 1991 he was a member of the 'new' JUMPING JEWELS and a single was recorded for CNR with Hot Samba (written by Leo Bennink) and Dakota. Also released in Japan on CD (Sound Of Euro Instro/ CENTURY) together with a third track Africa. Leo is a real Strat-man, but in the mid-sixties he used his own build guitar 'Maserati' with 6 pick-ups and silver scratchplate. Since 6 years has Bennink a musicschool at home and he's teaching guitar, bass and keyboard and he's also producing modern r&b; with new talents.
