The remarkable resurrection plant Xerophyta humilis reviving after being watered, followed by flowering after a few days. Resurrection plants are widely present in South Africa and are so named because of their ability to survive extreme water loss from their leaves, stems and roots. Our research efforts (see review by scientists; John Moore, Ngoc Tuan Le, Wolf Brandt, Azeddine Driouich and Jill Farrant) are focused on understanding how resurrection plants survive drought, and to apply this knowledge to improve crop plant survival in arid countries. This is the Resurrection plant. These plants are highly evolved to dry up and live up to 50 years without any water. when placed in water this plant comes back to life in about 1 hour. Shots are taken at about 15 sec intervals and played back at 15 fps. manual focus, white balance set to tungsten, the rest was left auto since light was constant. Using ultra intervalometer v1.0. Canon A650 IS. I couldn't be happier with my camera especially after adding CHDK.

Hygroscopic qualities, which causes the plant to curl up when dry and unfold when moist. Retains 3% of its water when it is dehydrated. Although shallow, their root system is very extensive and the leaves and stems can uptake water directly. Although they resemble mosses, they are vascular-they have specialized fluid-conducting tissues. IS AN IDEAL SYMBOL FOR THE COMING OF LIFE.

This is a time-lapse video shot of a so-called "Dinosaur Plant" being reintroduced to water. It's basically an ancient species of moss that can survive for decades without water. High-res version at gallery.mac.com It's also marketed as "Resurrection Plant", and is known as "Rose of Jerico", and "Stone Flower" (see www.infoplease.com and en.wikipedia.org ). This video was shot over a period of about 1.5 hours. Also, keep an eye out for a special appearance!

Drought can take a serious toll on plants and animals. When cells are deprived of water, they shrink, collapsing upon themselves and without water, cell biochemistry may malfunction. However, some plants, like the resurrection fern (Polypodium polypodioides), can survive extreme desiccation, losing as much as 95% of their water content. This is an amazing superpower! Most plants and animals can't tolerate more than 10 to 20 percent water loss. Fifteen percent water loss is usually fatal in human beings. The resurrection fern gets it name because it can survive extensive periods of drought by curling-up its fronds and appearing grey-brown ... dead. The curled leaves dry with their bottom side upwards. In this way they can rehydrate the quickest when rains comes, as most of the water is absorbed on the bottom side of the leaves. When drying, the plant produces special proteins, called dehydrins near the cell walls. Dehydrins attract water and act as a lubricant, allowing the cell walls to fold in a way that can be reversed. Scientists are studying how this works, to possibly bio-engineer this ability in other plants, so that they can better tolerate drought. It may be possible to design materials with a similar elastic response, such as mobile, deployable structures that are transported dry buy deploy using moisture uptake; structures with shape memory. This fern is an epiphyte, or air plant, which means that it gets nutrients from the air and water. It clings onto tree ...

My sister got me this strange, dried plant-in-a-bag for the holidays this year, and it sat on a shelf for two months before I finally decided to take action. It's branded as a "Resurrection Plant" because it can live in waterless stasis for... well, for months at least, but probably for longer (the package claims years). The plant comes from the desert, so it's a pretty good survival strategy. I hastily set up my camera, as an afterthought, to capture the plant's return to the living. The batteries died twice, and I ran out of space before the plant completely unfolded, but this video captures the best part. The original video is 1600x1200, and it's absolutely stunning at that resolution. Sorry youtubers, but you'll have to make due with a little less.

Neways is probably one of the first companies making a moisturiser that harnesses the molecules of the amazing Resurrection Plant (Haberlea Rhodopensis). This plant is one of nature's oddities. It can survive without water for many months (the record so far is 31!) and will spring back to life on introduction to water. This unique ability has been transported into the next generation of skin care products by Neways and, combined with our other ingredients, provides unmatched moisturising potential.
