Armed youths believed to be loyal to a pastor who challenged President Joseph Kabila in elections seven years ago stormed the state television station, the international airport and the military headquarters on Monday. A government spokesman said more than 70 attackers had been killed, 52 of them in Kinshasa, while three troops had died in the fighting in the capital. Government spokesman Lambert Mende said on state television that "39 terrorists were captured, including two wounded who were given medical treatment" and that nine civilians were also injured. Defence Minister Alexandre Luba Ntambo told journalists the situation was now "totally under control" and an investigation was under way. "Now we have to find out who the assailants are," he said, as he inspected the sites targeted in Monday's attacks. Ntambo sought to downplay the attacks, saying many residents of the capital "didn't even notice anything was happening". However, the United Nations said its troops in the conflict-ridden Democratic Republic of Congo had been placed on alert following the violence in the capital, the second city Lubumbashi, and the eastern town of Kindu. UN spokesman Martin Niersky said UN troops had engaged the gunmen at the airport, where a staff member was wounded during the exchange of fire. "The UN mission in the country, MONUSCO, has taken measures to ensure the safety and security of its staff and placed troops in these locations on alert," Niersky said in New York. The identity of the assailants remains unclear, although a television station employee said they had claimed loyalty to pastor Joseph Mukungubila Mutombo, one of the candidates who challenged Kabila in 2006 elections. In an open letter dated December 5, the pastor expressed bitterness at the way the country was being run and showed his hate for neighbouring Rwanda, which once invaded the DR Congo and is accused by the United Nations of backing rebels. He charged that Kabila was too close to Rwanda. Both men are from the resource-rich southeastern state of Katanga, where the president was visiting when the attacks took place on Monday. Shots were fired at Mukungubila's residence and church in Lubumbashi on Monday, according to a human rights activist. Another of his churches at nearby Kolwezi was also targeted. The violence erupted on Monday morning at the offices of state broadcaster RTNC near parliament, as well as the international airport and the main military base in Kinshasa, causing panic among residents. BREAKING NEWS _ M-23 Rebels Advance In The Democratic Republic Of Congo
Rebels in eastern areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have advanced even further towards the city of Goma after four days of clashes. They have pushed back government troops and U.N. peacekeepers who are based in what is the capital of North Kivu. It is also the headquarters of the U.N. peackeeping mission in the region and has about 6,700 forces based there. Goma, on the Rwandan border, is home to one million people including hundreds of thousands displaced by conflict. The M23 rebels deserted government ranks earlier this year, accusing Kinshasa of failing to respect a 2009 peace deal which ended a previous rebellion in North Kivu. Congo's government and U.N. investigators have accused Rwanda of supporting the group. More than 5 million people are estimated to have died from violence, hunger and disease in wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 1998.- published: 18 Nov 2012

Many dead in DR Congo blast caused by lightning - UN For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS An explosion at an arms depot in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed at least 20 people, UN officials say. The explosion happened on Friday after a bolt of lightning caused a fire at an army base in the city of Mbuji-Mayi. More than 50 people were also injured and houses were destroyed, said the statement by the Monusco UN mission. The aim of the Monusco is to neutralise armed groups in DR Congo, which is struggling to recover from a war that killed millions between 1998 and 2003. Friday's blast, which occurred near the main market in Mbuji-Mayi, caused "desolation" in the central city, according to Monusco. "I have instructed our office in Mbuji-Mayi to stand by and support local authorities in dealing with the situation," said Martin Kobler, head of the peacekeeping mission. Mbuji-Mayi is DR Congo's third-largest city and is at the heart of the county's diamond mining industry. DR Congo has massive mineral resources but most of its people live in poverty. Gunfire Rocks DR Congo TV & Airport - 30 Dec Breaking News Gunfire has been heard at several locations in Democratic Republic of Congo's capital, including the state TV and radio headquarters and the airport. Youths armed with machetes and guns had taken reporters hostage, a police spokesman told the AFP news agency. A customs official told Reuters that gunmen began shooting at the international airport shortly after the attack on RTNC's headquarters. The information minister says the situation was now under control. Lambert Mende told BBC Africa at about 11.00 local time (10:00 GMT) that several arrests had been made. The cause of the attacks was not clear, he said. Earlier, there were also reports of gunfire from a military base in the city. A taxi driver told AFP he heard about "six or seven shots" from heavy weapons fired at the Tshatshi camp. The shots were heard between 09:00 and 09:30 local time. The Ndjili airport customs official told the Reuters news agency: "Shooting has started here. They are shooting everywhere. We are all hiding." Congolese security forces were reported to be at the scene at the state media headquarters. Before the channels went off air, two gunmen appeared on camera to deliver what appeared to be a political message against President Joseph Kabila's government, Reuters reports. "Gideon Mukungubila has come to free you from the slavery of the Rwandan," said the message, according to Reuters. In 1997, Rwandan-backed troops ousted DR Congo's long-serving ruler Mobutu Sese Seko and installed Laurent Kabila - the father of incumbent leader Joseph Kabila - as president. President Joseph Kabila won his second term in office two years ago.
