FORMER Hobart indie-rocker Courtney Barnett is taking the US by storm, with millions of viewers tuning in to watch her US TV debut.

Melbourne-based Barnett performed her song Avant Gardener live on popular program The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon — which is watched in about three million US households each night — on Thursday, US time.

The episode will be broadcast for the first time in Australian on ABC2 at 7.30 tonight.

Barnett’s family moved from Sydney to Tasmania when she was 16, and she completed Grades 11 and 12 in Hobart before studying at the Tasmanian School of Art.

She left for the bright lights of Melbourne at the age of 20 but her parents remain in Hobart, and she still calls the city home.

Over the past 18 months, Barnett, 26, has become a favourite of fans and music critics alike, thanks to songs like Lance Jr and History Eraser, which was nominated for the 2013 APRA Song Of The Year. Rolling Stone has compared her to “early Bob Dylan’’ and “some hybrid of Kimya Dawson and Kurt Cobain”.

Avant Gardener features on Barnett’s critically acclaimed release The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, which came out in the US last week.

She performed at the massive Coachella festival in California earlier this month, and will stay in the US to play at the Firefly, NXNE and Outside Lands festivals over the coming months.

The in-demand Barnett will then tour the UK, including an appearance at the famous Glastonbury festival in June, before heading back to Australia for Splendour In The Grass in Byron Bay in July.
