Bear hunting is the act of hunting bears. Bears have been hunted since prehistoric times for their meat and fur.[citation needed]
Bears are large mammals in the order Carnivora. Although there are only eight living species of bear, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. The IUCN lists six bear species as vulnerable or endangered, and even "least concern" species such as the brown bear are at risk of extirpation in certain countries. The poaching and international trade of these most threatened populations is prohibited, but still ongoing.
Because of their imposing size, elusiveness, sharp senses, and ferocity, bears are among the most favoured big game animals. Where they are frequently hunted, bears become purely nocturnal.
Bears have the ability to dramatically lower their heart rate when hibernating, but will readily do so if injured as a defense mechanism against blood loss. Hunters carrying firearms tend to favour calibres large enough to inflict as much tissue and bone damage as possible, as Grizzly and Brown Bears can generally withstand a number or direct shots to the limbs or torso without ceasing their attack. Should a hunter successfully subdue a bear by firarms, he must be careful not to shoot it so many times as to leave a gaping wound that will hemorrhage. For this reason, bears are hard to kill by fair hunting, as they generally live in dense forests or thick brush. They are however easy to trap.

Fred Bear (March 5, 1902 – April 27, 1988) was an American bow hunter, bow manufacturer, author, and television host.
He was born in the town of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Although he did not start bow hunting until he was 29 and did not master the skill for many years, he is widely regarded as a pioneer in the bow-hunting community. Bear was a world traveler, film producer, and the founder of Bear Archery, an outdoor company that still exists.
He died in Gainesville, Florida, and is in the Bowhunters Hall of Fame.
Bear has been immortalized in the song "Fred Bear" from the album Spirit of the Wild by hard rock musician Ted Nugent, who was Bear's friend. The phrase "Oh Fred Bear guide our arrows home," was taken from this song and printed on Schenkel's Tinkles Guide Service T-Shirts in 2007. Fred Bear was also a popular contributing author for magazines such as Outdoor Life and Archery Magazine.
The Fred Bear Museum originated in Grayling, Michigan, in 1967. Eventually the museum's collection represented the largest privately held collection of archery artifacts in the world. Bear sold controlling interest in his company in 1968, but continued on as president. In 1978, following a strike and continuing labor problems, the Bear Archery manufacturing operation was relocated to Gainesville, Florida. At first the museum remained behind in Grayling, but in 1985 it too was moved to Gainesville, where it found a home in the Bear Archery plant between Archer Road and Williston Road, just off of I-75. That museum closed in 2003, and the collections were sold to the Bass Pro Shops chain.
