Teach For All's Wendy Kopp on Technology in the Classroom
Don't miss new Big Think videos! Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Teach For All CEO Wendy Kopp discuss the role (and limitations) of technology in the classroom. Transcript -- Well so first of all I think education must be the only sector that hasn't already been completely revolutionized by technology. I think about even how we do our work within Teach for America or Teach for All now versus ten years ago and it's completely and totally different just based on the power of technology. So there is no doubt - I mean we're not leveraging technology in the way that we absolutely must if we're gonna insure that kids truly attain an excellent education given how far we need to go in that pursuit from where we are right now. And I think there's so much that technology can do. We should be thinking about how to use the gaming technology that is so addictive for kids to good end for educational purposes. We can with - we should be able to do so much to get our teachers and our parents and our kids all clear on where kids are relative to where they're supposed to be based on rigorous standards so that -- I mean the most powerful way to motivate a kid is to tell them here's where you are against where you're supposed to be. Like they become obsessed with getting where they're supposed to be. Parents are dying for that information. Teachers themselves would benefit a lot from better information on that score. And if we could get that information in the hands of all those folks at the same time right there we would we would improve a lot. We should be individualizing instruction utilizing that data to actually give teachers the tools necessary to meet the needs of a very diverse group of kids which exists in every class. So there's just, there's so much we need technology to do. At the same time I've been somewhat disconcerted by some of the discussion that goes on around technology and education because it almost - and this seems extreme but I've sat in rooms full of folks who think that we could give kids tablets and that's it. Like they're gonna teach themselves. And I think in the end, especially when you're working with the most marginalized kids, the kids who are facing so many extra challenges, who don't have safety nets. They have the opposite of safety nets around them. I don't think we're gonna be able to replace just the kind of importance and power of personal relationships. Whenever we've seen the kids in the most disadvantaged context truly excel always it's been in classrooms and in whole schools where there is a clear vision of where the kids have the potential to be, where there are people working incredibly hard to convince the kids that they can succeed if they work hard enough and that it will make a difference in their lives. There's so much that goes into building a culture of achievement. And there's a lot that goes on that could be better done with technology as well. You know, like if the teachers and the principals in those schools had access to really great technology they could no doubt speed up learning. What we need is all of that together. Technology alone won't be the panacea. But if we can bring it to bear within a context of all the foundations that are important for quality education it could be a huge accelerator. Teach For All's Wendy Kopp on Cultivating Leadership
Don't miss new Big Think videos! Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Wendy Kopp discusses the origins of Teach for All and the process of cultivating leadership. I started Teach for America now 25 years ago. And as you may know Teach for America recruits top recent college grads, young professionals, people we believe are the US's most promising future leaders and ask them to commit two years to teach in high need urban and rural communities. The big idea is really to generate a growing force of leaders who not only have an immediate impact during the two years they initially commit but who end up working throughout their lives from inside of education, from outside of it, at every level of policy to effect the fundamental kind of systemic changes necessary to ultimately insure that all kids in our country fulfill their true potential. And I was thinking about nothing but trying to get bigger and better in the US when it must have been about eight or nine years ago there was something in the water. I started hearing from social entrepreneurs, 13 people in a year's time from India to Lebanon to Chile to the next place who were just absolutely determine to bring this model to their context. To call upon India's most promising future leaders. Ask them to commit two years to teaching their highest need communities, invest in their development as a long term force for change. So that's how Teach for All came about. We're now seven years in. There are 33 and growing independent social enterprises really in every region of the world who are working to essentially cultivate the leadership capacity necessary to ultimately ensure again that all kids have the chance to fulfill their true potential. Cultivating Leadership: Recruitment, Selection, and Development This year Teach for India had 13,000 people competing for about 500 spots. Teach for Pakistan had more than 1,000 people competing for 40 spots. And Enseña por Columbia had 2,400 folks competing for about 50 or 60 spots. So aggressive recruitment on college campuses, surrounding these programs with an aura of status and prestige. And at the same time asking folks to commit two years because for the most talented recent college grads, the people who have the most other career options who are under enormous pressure from their families and from society at large to use their education to get on these career tracks that make a lot of money, et cetera. It's just everyone else is asking them to commit two years and these are folks with an inclination to want to make a difference. They want to do this but they're under so much pressure that they can't commit a whole lifetime to it. So asking them for two years at the start enables these programs to pull in truly some of the most highly sought after young leaders in their countries. Each of these programs has a very intensive selection process. And they're looking for leadership characteristics. For people who have taken on big challenges, have persevered in the face of obstacles to reach big goals. People who can influence and motivate others, who are strong problem solvers. People who will work with a lot of respect and humility. So very intensive, not only recruitment processes, but then selection processes. First Nations Lakota People. A Message for All of Humanity. Heartbreaking!
From the movie trailer "First Nations" by "Wind Cave Productions". Any copyrighted material in this video is copied for educational purposes only. "Life is a circle and we as common people are created to stand within it and not on it. I am not just of the past but I am the past. I am here. I am now and I will be tomorrow." --Lakota Oyate Follow us @ https://www.facebook.com/iloveancestry https://twitter.com/LovingAncestry http://iloveancestry.tumblr.com http://pinterest.com/iloveancestry The Story : This documentary tells the story of the meeting between a young Native American from the Lakota tribe, Moses Brings Plenty who is a descendent of the Lakota, and a 12-year-old French boy named Eli Torelli has come here to learn about the Native Americans that fascinated him in France. One night, Eli dreams of a native man, and the next day Moses Brings Plenty comes to his school to lecture. Moses will become Eli's guide, bringing him to his reservation in Pine Ridge South Dakota, bringing to light and introducing to him the world of the Lakota elders, and the reality of life on a reservation in the present day. Eli, who is sincere and forthright in only the way children can be, will receive, from the elders, heritage from the past, learning their history, their suffering and their culture. At the same time he will discover what the fruits of this history are and witness their everyday life on a reservation and the problems they have to deal with from day to day. Brings Plenty and Eli will continue their spiritual voyage in the past exploring the ghastly history of Wounded Knee in 1890 up to the present . Eli will learn that the problems besetting his friend Moses' people, actually affect some of the of Native Americans of our times. "They made us many promises, more than I can remember. But they kept one. They promised they would take our land...and they took it." --Chief Red Cloud. Production Notes: The lack of understanding between cultures is always related to ignorance. We all have many questions about one another we would ask if we could or if we had the courage. Some these unanswered questions about American Indians that have lingered for generations are the subject of this film. Many questions have been blown away by the wind, and many answers have burned in the fires. To get to know ones' neighbor is not to become a neighbor, but rather to learn to respect him and his culture, his roots and what he is. What to tell ... Most of you have been living here on this planet under this capitalist illusion for many centuries by thinking the money is in need to live your life ( accept few, like the American Indian Nations or the nations living their simple lives in far away lands, they have been telling you and warning you about this negative events for a long time ... but you never want to listen to them, until now) ... Now you can see how your money world is evil and it is collapsing. The Earth is bleeding under this sick influence. Not just the people, but whole Earth needs the cure. In fact we do not need to look for some new solutions to survive, because we just need to go back to the original natural time where we all belong. The best way how to do it now is just to look around and ask some of the native elders and they will show you the exact true road where to go and what to do. They have been told by the "sky ancestors" to keep the positive knowledge for you to have to survive.
