Meru, Hazaribagh

Meru is a census town in Hazaribagh (community development block) of Hazaribagh district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is located on the Hazaribagh- Bagodar road (National Highway 100).

It is located at 24°1′46″N 85°27′26″E / 24.02944°N 85.45722°E / 24.02944; 85.45722.

Demographics

As per 2011 Census of India Meru had a population of 7,780. There were 4,740 males and 3,040 females. Scheduled Castes numbered 957 and Scheduled Tribes numbered 31.

As of 2001 India census, Meru had a population of 8,547. Males constitute 66% of the population and females 34%. Meru has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 86%, and female literacy is 55%. In Meru, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

As per 2011 census the total number of literates in Meru was 5,914 out of which 3,992 were males and 1,922 were females.

BSF centre

Meru has a BSF training centre and school for advance training of counter insurgency, counter terrorism and bomb disposal.

Hazaribagh

Hazaribagh is a city and a municipality in Hazaribagh district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the divisional headquarters of North Chotanagpur division. It is famous as a health resort and for Hazaribagh National Park (17 km from city). It is represented in the Indian Lok Sabha by its Member of Parliament Jayant Sinha.

Etymology

The word 'Hazaribagh' is made of two Persian words: Hazar meaning 'one thousand' and bagh meaning 'garden'. Hence the meaning of Hazaribagh is 'city of a thousand gardens'. According to Sir John Houlton, however, the town takes its name from the small villages of Okni and Hazari – shown in old maps as Ocunhazry. The last syllable in its name probably originated from a mango grove which formed a camping ground for troops and travellers marching along a military road from Kolkata to Varanasi, constructed in 1782 and the following years. The Grand Trunk Road subsequently replaced this military road in the mid-9th century, but the layout differed at places, particularly around Hazaribagh. A dilapidated watch tower meant to guard the military road is still visible on Tower Hill, near Silwar.

Hazaribagh (Lok Sabha constituency)

Hazaribagh Lok Sabha constituency (Hindi: हजारीबाग लोक सभा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र) is one of the 14 Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Jharkhand state in eastern India. This constituency covers the entire Ramgarh district and part of Hazaribagh district
