Elizabeth May: Farley Mowat (1921-2014)
Elizabeth May: Mr. Speaker, I rise to pay tribute to my friend, Farley McGill Mowat. Born May 12, 1921, he was, as we all know, one of Canada's most outstanding talents, an author whose more than 40 works were translated into 52 languages and sold more than 17 million copies. Repeating the accomplishments of his literary career, we risk losing out on the other things he contributed to this country: his war record in the Second World War, serving with the Hasty Ps in the dreadful Sicily campaign, going behind enemy lines to organize food distribution for the starving Dutch civilians. He was, more than anything else, a voice for the wild. He was a voice for the environment and, more than that, he was a voice against recklessness, greed, and indifference of humanity as we destroy our only planet: home. Let his epitaph be: the cry of the loon, the wolves howl, and the human voices raised in the public square that we stop the squander of our natural world. God bless Farley. http://elizabethmaymp.ca/video/farley-mowat- published: 09 May 2014

"The Kid" (1921) - Charlie Chaplin (HD)
The Kid is a 1921 American silent comedy-drama film written by, produced by, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin, and features Jackie Coogan as his adopted son and sidekick. This was Chaplin's first full-length movie. It was a huge success, and was the second-highest grossing film in 1921, behind The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. In 2011, The Kid was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Plot: An unwed woman (Edna Purviance) leaves a charity hospital carrying her newborn son. An artist (Carl Miller), the apparent father, is shown with the woman's photograph. When it falls into the fireplace, he first picks it up, then throws it back in to burn up. The woman decides to leave her child in the back seat of an expensive automobile with a handwritten note imploring the finder to care for and love the baby. However, the car is stolen. When the two thieves discover the child, they leave him on the street. The Little Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) finds the baby. Unwilling at first to take on the responsibility, he eventually softens and names the boy John. Five years pass, and the child becomes the Tramp's partner in minor crime, throwing stones to break windows that the Tramp can then repair. Meanwhile, the woman becomes a wealthy star. She does charity work among the poor to fill the void of her missing child. By chance, mother and child meet, but do not recognize each other. When the boy becomes sick, a doctor comes to see him. He discovers that the Tramp is not the boy's father. The Tramp shows him the note left by the mother, but the doctor merely takes it and notifies the authorities. Two men come to take the boy to an orphanage, but after a fight and a chase, the Tramp regains his boy. When the woman comes back to see how the boy is doing, the doctor tells her what has happened, then shows her the note, which she recognizes. The fugitives spend the night in a flophouse, but the manager (an uncredited Henry Bergman), having read of the $1000 reward offered for the child, takes him to the police station to be united with his ecstatic mother. When the Tramp wakes up, he searches frantically for the missing boy, then returns to doze beside the now-locked doorway to their humble home. In his sleep, he enters "Dreamland," with angels in residence and devilish interlopers. He is awakened by a policeman, who places the Tramp in a car and rides with him to a house. When the door opens, the woman and John emerge, reuniting the elated adoptive father and son. The policeman, happy for the family, shakes the Tramp's hand and leaves, before the woman welcomes the Tramp into her home. The Three Musketeers-1921-Douglas Fairbanks-1/2-A classic swashbuckling film-Full movie
"The Three Musketeers", 1921, starring Douglas Fairbanks, is a classic swashbuckling silent film. Douglas Fairbanks (as D'Artagnan)'s greatest ambition is to become musketeer. And, after impressing the three best swordsmen in Paris, Douglas Fairbanks becomes the fourth blade, together with Athos, Porthos and Aramis. He also finds love, with Marguerite De La Motte (as Constance), and much palace intrigue. Nigel de Brulier (as Cardinal Richelieu) makes life particularly irksome, involving Fairbanks and friends in schemes against weak a King Adolphe Menjou (as Louis XIII), and his unfaithful Queen Mary MacLaren (as Anne). Alexandre Dumas' classic is a perfect vehicle for Fairbanks; who, after the success of his "Zorro", struck box office gold with a series of classy audience pleasing productions. Iit's certainly true that Fairbanks' 1920s films had an indelible impact upon subsequent adaptations. Fairbanks, through the force of his personality, didn't so much "play" characters like "D'Artagnan" as much as he made the characters play him. Fred Niblo (director) and Arthur Edeson (photographer) create a great swashbuckling atmosphere. Nigel de Brulier steals the acting honors, with his cunning, cat-stroking "Richelieu"; the best supporting player will reprise his role in a trio of additional "Musketeers" films, including the superior Fairbanks sequel "The Iron Mask" (1929). Pretty "leading lady" De La Motte (from "Zorro") and others will also return. After all, it is... "All for one and one for all." Nigel De Brulier who plays Cardinal Richelieu, would also play the role in the 1935 film of the same name. In addition, he also played Richelieu in the 1929 film "The Iron Mask" and the 1939 film "The Man in the Iron Mask." Douglas Fairbanks (May 23, 1883 -- December 12, 1939) was an American actor, screenwriter, director and producer. He was best known for his swashbuckling roles in silent films such as The Thief of Bagdad, Robin Hood, The Mark of Zorro and The Three Musketeers. Fairbanks signed a contract with Triangle Pictures in 1915 and began working under the supervision of D.W. Griffith. His first film was titled The Lamb, and in the film, he debuted his remarkable athletic abilities that would gain wide attention among theatre audiences. Fairbanks met actress Mary Pickford at a party in 1916 and they began an affair. In 1917, the couple joined Fairbanks' friend Charlie Chaplin selling war bonds by train across the U.S. Pickford and Chaplin were then the two highest paid film stars in Hollywood.Fairbanks was determined to have Pickford become his wife, but she was still married to actor Owen Moore. He finally gave her an ultimatum. She then obtained a fast divorce in the small Nevada town of Minden on March 2, 1920. Fairbanks leased the Beverly Hills mansion Grayhall and was rumoured to have used it during his courtship of Pickford. The couple married on March 28, 1920. Fairbanks and Pickford separated in 1933, after he began an affair with Sylvia, Lady Ashley. They divorced in 1936, with Pickford keeping the Pickfair estate. Within months Fairbanks and Ashley were married in Paris. In December 1939, at 56, Fairbanks had a heart attack in his sleep and died a day later at his home in Santa Monica. By some accounts[citation needed], he had been obsessively working out against medical advice, trying to regain his once-trim waistline. Fairbanks's famous last words were, "I've never felt better." His funeral service was held at the Wee Kirk o' the Heather Church in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery where he was placed in a crypt in the Great Mausoleum. He was deeply mourned and honored by his colleagues and fans for his contributions to the film industry and Hollywood. Miss America Winners 1921-2013
The Miss America Pageant began as a marketing idea. The Businessmen's League of Atlantic City needed to develop a plan to keep tourists on the boardwalk past Labor Day. They organized a Fall Frolic and held it on September 25, 1920. There were many events that day, but the most popular was a parade of young women being pushed along the Boardwalk in rolling chairs. Ernestine Cremona, dressed in a flowing white robe, was in charge of this event. This event was such a success that a similar one was planned for the following year, and so on. At the same time, in an effort to increase circulation, newspapers on the East Coast had begun sponsoring beauty pageants judged on photograph submissions. The Businessmen's League of Atlantic City got ear of this and decided to capitalize on this idea. They invited the winners of these local newspaper beauty contests to the next Fall Frolic to compete in an "Inter-City Beauty" Contest. This contest had two parts—a popularity contest and a beauty contest. The winner of the beauty contest, the "Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America", was to be awarded the title of "Golden Mermaid". On September 8, 1921, one hundred thousand people came to the Boardwalk to watch the contestants, a turn out much more than the Businessmen's League of Atlantic City had expected. A panel of artists serving as judges named sixteen-year-old Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C., the winner of both contests and awarded her a $100 prize. When Gorman returned in 1922 to defend her laurels, she was draped in the American flag and called "Miss America". 1921 Margaret Gorman Miss Washington, D.C 1922 Mary Campbell Miss Columbus 1923 Mary Campbell Miss Columbus 1924 Ruth Malcomson Miss Philadelphia 1925 Fay Lanphier Miss California 1926 Norma Smallwood Miss Tulsa 1927 Lois Delander Miss Illinois 1933 Marian Bergeron Miss Connecticut 1935 Henrietta Leaver Miss Pittsburgh 1936 Rose Coyle Miss Philadelphia 1937 Bette Cooper Miss Bertrand Island 1938 Marilyn Meseke Miss Ohio 1939 Patricia Donnelly Miss Michigan 1940 Frances Marie Burke Miss Philadelphia 1941 Rosemary LaPlanche Miss California 1942 Jo-Carroll Dennison Miss Texas 1943 Jean Bartel Miss California 1944 Venus Ramey Miss Washington, DC 1945 Bess Myerson Miss New York City 1946 Marilyn Buferd Miss California 1947 Barbara Jo Walker Miss Memphis 1948 BeBe Shopp Miss Minnesota 1949 Jacque Mercer Miss Arizona 1951 Yolande Betbeze Miss Alabama 1952 Colleen Kay Hutchins Miss Utah 1953 Neva Jane Langley Miss Georgia 1954 Evelyn Margaret Ay Miss Pennsylvania 1955 Lee Meriwether Miss California 1956 Sharon Ritchie Miss Colorado 1957 Marian McKnight Miss South Carolina 1958 Marilyn Van Derbur Miss Colorado 1959 Mary Ann Mobley Miss Mississippi 1960 Lynda Lee Mead Miss Mississippi 1961 Nancy Fleming Miss Michigan 1962 Maria Fletcher Miss North Carolina 1963 Jacquelyn Mayer Miss Ohio 1964 Donna Axum Miss Arkansas 1965 Vonda Kay Van Dyke Miss Arizona 1966 Deborah Irene Bryant Miss Kansas 1967 Jane Anne Jayroe Miss Oklahoma 1968 Debra Dene Barnes Miss Kansas 1969 Judith Anne Ford Miss Illinois 1970 Pamela Anne Eldred Miss Michigan 1971 Phyllis Ann George Miss Texas 1972 Laurie Lea Schaefer Miss Ohio 1973 Terry Anne Meeuwsen Miss Wisconsin 1974 Rebecca Ann King Miss Colorado 1975 Shirley Cothran Miss Texas 1976 Tawny Elaine Godin Miss New York 1977 Dorothy Kathleen Benham Miss Minnesota 1978 Susan Perkins Miss Ohio 1979 Kylene Barker Miss Virginia 1980 Cheryl Prewitt Miss Mississippi 1981 Susan Powell Miss Oklahoma 1982 Elizabeth Ward Miss Arkansas 1983 Debra Maffett Miss California 1984 (1) Vanessa L.
