TIFF 2013: "African Metropolis" - Three stories from three African cities «The African Metropolis Short Film Project is an initiative of the Goethe-Institut South Africa and South African executive producer Steven Markovitz, with support from Guaranty Trust Bank plc and the Hubert Bals Fund of International Film Festival Rotterdam. This year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will present the international premiere of selected films from the "African Metropolis" series, showing three short films from three African directors shot in three African cities. Filmmakers Vincent Moloi and Jim Chuchu will be in Toronto to present the short films, which show the face of a modern and cosmopolitan Africa, challenging long-standing clichés about the continent. "African Metropolis" is a larger series of short fiction films from Abidjan, Cairo, Dakar, Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi, which had its world premiere at the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) this July, one of the most important film industry events on the continent. Two years of intensive preparation led up to the premieres: Based on 40 scripts submitted, the film makers were chosen. A mentoring program and workshops ensued, which started off at the Durban Talent Campus in July 2012.
