WHERE GOOD IDEAS COME FROM by Steven Johnson
WHERE GOOD IDEAS COME FROM by Steven Johnson
One of our most innovative, popular thinkers takes on-in exhilarating style-one of our key questions: Where do good ideas come from? With Where Good Ideas Come From, Steven Johnson pairs the insight of his bestselling Everything Bad Is Good for You and the dazzling erudition of The Ghost Map and The Invention of Air to address an urgent and universal question: What sparks the flash of brilliance? How does groundbreaking innovation happen? Answering in his infectious, culturally omnivorous style, using his fluency in fields from neurobiology to popular culture, Johnson provides the complete, exciting, and encouraging story of how we generate the ideas that push our careers, our lives, our society, and our culture forward. Beginning with Charles Darwin's first encounter with the teeming ecosystem of the coral reef and drawing connections to the intellectual hyperproductivity of modern megacities and to the instant success of YouTube, Johnson shows us that the question we need to ask is, What kind of environment fosters the development of good ideas? His answers are never less than revelatory, convincing, and inspiring as Johnson identifies the seven key principles to the genesis of such ideas, and traces them across time and disciplines. Most exhilarating is Johnson's conclusion that with today's tools and environment, radical innovation is extraordinarily accessible to those who know how to cultivate it. Where Good Ideas Come From is essential reading for anyone who wants to know how to come up with tomorrow's great ideas.- published: 17 Sep 2010

The bad-ass Silicon Valley VC talks context and lack of innovation in Silicon Valley
Chamath Palihapitiya impressed me last year with his straight-forward no bull approach. Plus he's invested in companies like box.net and AirBnB so he has a good eye for great entrepreneurs. But lately I've heard that his VC Fund, https://angel.co/the-social-capital-partnership, has been investing in wearable computing, hardware, and contextual stuff, so I wanted to hear what he's thinking. Boy did he lay a lot on the line here. Not only explained how he sees the world changing due to social technology (he was an executive at Facebook) but also laid out how sensors and wearable computers will change the world. Oh, and he takes some good swings at Silicon Valley, too.- published: 05 Sep 2013

The secret inside of innovation: Patrick Meyer at TEDxVillanovaU
Patrick has been a CEO, President, CMO and longtime c-level advisor, working with Fortune 500 companies (Coca-Cola, Apple, Google, Ford, Adidas, Virgin), today's start-ups, and select charities and universities, with a focus on Innovation as a driver of success. He helped found the Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship (I.C.E.) Center at Villanova University and its Meyer I.C.E. Awards given out annually. Patrick has been an advisor to the Dean of Villanova Business School on its strategic direction and evolution in the caliber of graduates entering into the marketplace. He is also a recent author of a new smartphone-empowered book, Steve Jobs & The World of Mobile: Insights For The Future. Villanova has been an inspiration in his life since visiting Villanova as a young boy with his Dad (Paul Meyer, Class of 1930). That has never stopped for him and his Villanova alum family. In the last decade he has found great joy in bringing innovation and inspiration to the efforts of the University, its professors and most importantly to the students and its emerging graduates. When Patrick is not working he can be found training for the upcoming two-day, 165 mile, charity cycling event from Miami to Key West! Or he might be doing an episode of PatrickTV or speaking to people around the world on Shifting Your Game: Business 3.0. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)- published: 07 Jan 2014
