The Wild Coast: An Exploration of the Guianas
The Wild Coast: An Exploration of the Guianas
Go to http://www.lamanchamedia.org for more info about this film and to see more. The Wild Coast is a physical, historical and philosophical exploration of the Guianas, the three countries that make up the northeast of South America. None of these three countries speak Spanish as an official language and one has English as the official language. They are quite unique and still very much wild and untamed. In our filming the main theme of the Guianas is freedom. As you will see in the film, freedom has both been trampled on and clinged-to at very great costs. The film explores what happened at Jonestown, where 900 people died during a mass suicide/murder led by cult leader Jim Jones in 1973. It explores the freedom-loving Maroon people of Suriname who were brought as slaves from Africa but rebelled against their slave owners establishing their own communities in the jungle and fighting back against their former slave masters. This group later would fight against the Marxist dictator president of Suriname, Desi Bouterse during the Suriname Guerilla War. And finally we explore the penal system in French Guiana, and specifically Henri Charrière and his book Papillon, the greatest story of prison escape every told, and where he eventually escaped to, Venezuela (with a glorious look at the Angel Falls in Canaima National Park).- published: 27 Feb 2014

Guianas Challenge

It borders Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west. Its 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi) area has a very low population density of less than 3 inhabitants per km2, with half of its 239,450 people in 2012[1] living in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. By land area, it is by far the largest overseas region of France. As an oversea region, it is inside the European Union. The addition of the adjective "French" in English comes from colonial times when five such colonies existed (The Guianas), namely from west to east: Spanish Guiana (now Guayana Region in Venezuela), British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), French Guiana, and Portuguese Guiana (now Amapá, a state in far northern Brazil). French Guiana and the two larger countries to the north and west, Guyana and Suriname, are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas and comprise one large shield landmass. A large part of the department's economy derives from the presence of the Guiana Space Centre, now the European Space Agency's primary launch site near the equator. 1212 The Guyanas
Another video from our circumnavigation on our 12.5 metre steel yacht which started in April 2005 at Southsea Marina in the UK and ended back there in November 2013. It was a blast. Between Brazil and the Caribbean lie the Guyanas (Guianas), French, Suriname (ex-Dutch Guyana) and Guyana (ex-British Guyana). Three flat, muddy but interesting areas for their own reasons. We came a bit of a cropper in Guyana, watch the video. Man-Eating Anacondas - Documentary
Man-Eating Anacondas - Documentary
Researchers trek into the jungles of Venezuela on the search for man-eating anacondas and later a trip to the Florida Everglades to look for massive pythons - where one was photographed swallowing a full grown alligator. An anaconda is a large, non-venomous snake found in tropical South America. Although the name actually applies to a group of snakes, it is often used to refer only to one species in particular, the common or green anaconda, Eunectes murinus, which is one of the largest snakes in the world. Any member of the genus Eunectes, a group of large, aquatic snakes found in South America. Eunectes murinus, the green anaconda, the largest species, is found east of the Andes in Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago. Eunectes notaeus, the yellow anaconda, a small species, is found in eastern Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay and northeastern Argentina. Eunectes deschauenseei, the darkly-spotted anaconda, is a rare species found in northeastern Brazil and coastal French Guiana. Eunectes beniensis, the Bolivian anaconda, the most recently defined species, is found in the Departments of Beni and Pando in Bolivia. The giant anaconda is a mythical snake of enormous proportions said to be found in South America. Any large snake that "constricts" its prey, if applied loosely, could be called anaconda. There are various theories regarding the origin of the name Anaconda itself, sources suggest that the name Anaconda comes from the Tamil word anaikondran, which means "elephant killer". Another suggestion is that it represents Tamil word anaikkonda which means "having killed an elephant". There are other theories that say that the word originated from the Sinhala henakandaya since the phonetic sounds are very similar. However, this name is used to refer the brown vine snake, Ahaetulla pulverulenta. The word is of uncertain origin as no snake name like it is found in Sinhalese or Tamil. It is unclear how the name originated so far from the snake's native habitat; it is likely due to its vague similarity to the large Asian pythons. The name was first used in the English language in 1768 by V. Jonasson in a colorful description of a large snake found in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), most likely a reticulated python, Python reticulatus. The account, which explains how the snake constricts and devours tigers, is full of popular misconceptions, but was much read at the time, and so gave rise to the myth of the anaconda of Ceylon.- published: 11 Mar 2014

Gaia's mission: solving the celestial puzzle
A space mission to create the largest, most-accurate, map of the Milky Way in three dimensions will revolutionise our understanding of the galaxy and the universe beyond.
On 19th December 2013, a rocket blasted into the sky from a launch site in French Guiana and travelled 1.5 million km to reach its destination in orbit around the Sun. The spacecraft is called Gaia. Its mission, funded by the European Space Agency and involving scientists from across Europe, is to make the largest, most precise, three-dimensional map of the Milky Way ever attempted.
It will be a census of a billion stars spread across our galaxy. The results, says Professor Gerry Gilmore from Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy and the Principal Investigator for UK involvement in the mission, "will revolutionise our understanding of the cosmos as never before."
