Two US military aircraft have flown around the Diaoyu islands in the East China Sea without informing China, defying China's declaration that the area falls within its new air defense identification zone. The Pentagon said two US B-52 bombers were following normal procedures, which do not include filing flight plans, maintaining radio contact or registering their frequencies.- published: 27 Nov 2013

Is Japan Playing Chess in China ADIZ?
Is Japan Playing Chess in China ADIZ?
Events are quickly escalating over the new China Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The announcement was condemned by Korea, Japan, and the United States. While China has the right to create such a zone (and Korea and Japan have their own), the issue seems to be at the scale of the zone, its requirements, and overlaps with disputed lands. Yesterday, the United States flew two B-52s through the area on what it called a preplanned flight. China responded by saying it quickly monitored the flight, yet did not send any aircraft to meet the American plane once it entered into the China ADIZ. The Japanese government has taken a new step, which may escalate the matter further. It has asked its flag carriers not to provide information to China should routes enter the new ADIZ. Both Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airlines have not received the actual request, but said they will consider it once they do. Should the airlines follow Tokyo's request, it places those flights and passengers in an interesting position. Given the US and Japan do not recognize the China ADIZ and have sent military aircraft into it already, should civilian craft not abide by the guidelines, China has no other choice but to respond in a decisive manner or risk losing control of the airspace. This would most likely mean targeting the planes with surface to air missiles or sending interceptors. Both of which create diplomatic problems and further increase tensions. Is this the right move for Tokyo? Are they using passengers as pawns in an international chess match? What are your thoughts? US Sends "Submarine Hunter" Jets To Japan Amidst Tension Over China's ADIZ
On November 29, 2013, six days after China's unilateral declaration of an air defense identification zone or ADIZ, the US Navy sent two P-8A Poseidon patrol jets, a sophisticated surveillance aircraft, to the US air base in Okinawa amidst raising tension. The new air zone covers territories also being claimed by Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, including the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands which the Chinese called Diaoyu. The move is part of US "pivot to Pacific" which many experts believe to contain China's aggressive actions in the region against its weaker and smaller neighbors. Japan illegally annexed Paracels in 1974 from Vietnam, Mischief Reef in 1995 and Scarborough Shoal in 2012 from the Philippines. It is currently eyeing to wrest control of Senkaku Islands from Japan with its new air defense zone.- published: 06 Dec 2013

On the People's Daily website, experts say the move from the U.S. side served four purposes. They were: to test China's reaction, show off its power to allies, reassert its role in the Asia-Pacific region, and prevent Chinese counter measures to its patrols in the area.- published: 29 Nov 2013

대담ADIZ expansion and surrounding contoversy
http://www.arirang.co.kr/News/News_Index.asp Subscribe:http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangnews It all started with China's move to expand its Air Defense Identification Zone, followed by neighboring countries including Korea refusing to acknowledge it. Tensions in the region have been ratcheted up, and Korea is set to announce plans to take more decisive action. To provide us with some valuable insights, we are joined by Dr. Jung Gi-woong, senior research fellow from the Center for International Area Studies, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Thank you for joining us. Good to be here. ADIZ and KADIZ have become very familiar terms for Koreans these days,... but it would be good to hear from an expert about the significance of these defense zones and what making changes to them means. Some experts point out that China's move to make changes to its ADIZ is driven by the will to militarily silence Japan over their island dispute. But it would also seem that the U.S. can now justify its pivot to Asia initiative. The U.S. is clearly siding with Japan in the territorial row, displaying their military might through combined naval exercises with Japan after China dispatched fighter jets to the new ADIZ. Are we seeing a prelude to the future of the relations between these three nations? How the ADIZ situation develops could have very negative consequences for Korea, especially since Korea's ADIZ overlaps with that of China's. Cleary there's no talking China out of it. Why is that? And can we expect some sort of military action? After today, it seems quite clear Korea will expand its own KADIZ. But by how much? And how effective will this response be? What other viable and effective options do we have? Thank you for being here with us, Dr. Jung.- published: 02 Dec 2013

South Korea to redraw its ADIZ to compete with China
South Korea to redraw its ADIZ to compete with China
Events continue to develop in the East China sea between China, South Korea, and Japan. Over the weekend, Seoul announced it would most likely extend its own ADIZ to include a disputed submerged islet called Ieodo. The newly drawn Chinese ADIZ includes the submerged piece of real estate despite it being claimed by Korea in 1951. It should be noted that according to international maritime law, the the islet falls in international waters and doesn't belong to anyone. Korea claims Ieodo because of legendary tales from Jeju that specify the islet as the home of spirits of sailors lost at sea. Since Seoul, Tokyo, and the US do not recognize the new Chinese ADIZ, and Seoul has been criticized that their current zone didn't include Ieodo. Should Korea redraw their lines to include the area, it could set the stage for a confrontation with China akin to the Senkaku/Diaoyu dispute taking place. China has stepped up their patrols of the area with military aircraft and if Korea sends in planes to assert control over Ieodo, China would be forced to respond in kind or risk acquiescing overall control. China's Next Moves Following its East China Sea ADIZ
So what are China's next strategy moves in the Asia-Pacific Region? What does the PLA really think about the U.S. military and its capabilities? --a bizarre perception that encourages them to push now. China has now been successful at establishing its Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea. In the process, we have seen a bizarre, almost schizophrenic, series of contradictory communications on the subject coming out of Washington that have enhanced China's successful roll-out. Following the roll-out, we witnessed a near collision by U.S. and Chinese naval ships in the East China Sea along with the departure of China's lone aircraft carrier (sans aircraft) for the South China Sea for a "show the flag" cruise. So what are China's next strategy moves in the Asia-Pacific Region? What does the PLA really think about the U.S. military and its capabilities? --a bizarre perception that encourages them to push now. This program is Part 2 of the conversation between "Asia in Review" Host David Day and China Hand Michael Sacharski. Mr. Sacharski has spent some 3+ decades in China, met and worked with various members of its leadership and has fascinating perspectives to share about China's ADIZ planning & gameplan, its unexpected success in the imposition of its new ADIZ in the East China Sea, and what strategic moves we can now expect China to make in the Asia-Pacific Region in the near term.- published: 20 Dec 2013

GQ Exclusive:
"Here is an exclusive stream of Florence and the Machine's "Over the Love," the band's contribution to the excellent Jay-Z executive-produced Great Gatsby soundtrack. Based on what we recall from SparkNotes, this tremendous tune seems to be written from the perspective of Daisy, Gatsby's lifelong crush. Classic symbols from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel are threaded throughout, from Daisy's yellow dress to the green light that hovers outside her home on the dock in East Egg. The real giveaway, though, is the line, "'Cause you're a hard soul to save with an ocean in the way, but I'll get around it."

China's New ADIZ
Are there unusual crossovers of the new China ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone) with both Taiwan and South Korea? There are and the Taiwan piece is perhaps something that most people do not know. Is China's new ADIZ over the Senkaku islands a precursor to further ADIZs China may have in mind? What is this new Air Defense Zone that China has imposed in the East China Sea all about? How did we get here? What about the schizophrenic, wires-crossed responses coming out of the Pentagon and the State Department? "Asia in Review" host David Day engages in a fascinating conversation with special guest Michael Sacharski. Mr. Sacharski has lived and worked in China as an American executive and entrepreneur for some 3+ decades and shares some interesting insights into the Chinese thinking behind this new strategy. China's airheaded 'air-defense zone' angers neighbors
China has unilaterally declared an "air-defense identification zone" (ADIZ) over a vast area of the East China Sea, covering disputed islands that are also claimed by Japan and Taiwan. China's ADIZ also brings China into conflict with Korea and Japan China's defence ministry said that military aircraft entering the zone must obey its rules or face "emergency defensive measures." Japan refers to the islands as the Senkaku while Taiwan and China call them the Diaoyutai islands. Japan has lodged a strong protest over what they call an "escalation." "Setting up such airspace unilaterally escalates the situations surrounding the Senkaku islands and has danger of leading to an unexpected situation," Japan's foreign ministry said in a statement. Taiwan expressed regret at the move and promised that the military would take measure to protect national security. The Chinese defense ministry said aircraft must report a flight plan, "maintain two-way radio communications," and "respond in a timely and accurate manner" to identification inquiries. "China's armed forces will adopt defensive emergency measures to respond to aircraft that do not cooperate in the identification or refuse to follow the instructions," the statement said. The Chinese claimed that the zone came into effect last Saturday, November 23. Defense ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said China set up the area "with the aim of safeguarding state sovereignty, territorial land and air security, and maintaining flight order." "It is not directed against any specific country or target," Yang said. He also added that China "has always respected the freedom of over-flight in accordance with international law." So basically he just lied and wasted everyone's time. Experts agree that China just wants to test its neighbors and the US. China's greed is boundless - it probably even has its eye on the new volcanic island that formed in Japanese waters last week.
