One Week Live Performance - Composed by Kyle Gordon
New Original Score composed, conducted, and orchestrated by Kyle Gordon
Buster Keaton’s – One Week
Originally released in 1920, One Week is one of Keaton’s most acclaimed films. This short tells the story of a newlywed couple trying to start their lives, but having to face a few obstacles along the way.

Over the course of his undergraduate degree at the University of North Texas as a Jazz Arranging major, Kyle has had opportunities to write for many different types of ensembles-choirs, jazz choirs, chamber groups, country groups, string quartets, big bands, and orchestras. Kyle Gordon & Aaron Dutton Senior Recital
00:25 The Shadow of Your Smile: KG - Arguably, one of the best songs ever written for a movie. Johnny Mandel wrote this song as the Love Theme for The Sandpiper in 1965. I chose to arrange this piece because I thought that it would be a nice departure from the general vibe of the concert so far. The chart features Aaron against lush orchestral backgrounds throughout. I tried to capture the feeling that Claus Ogerman achieved in his collaborations with Jobim, although we do have a bigger orchestra on stage tonight than Ogerman did, so I had to set a slightly different artistic agenda to fully utilize the colors that were available. The romantic and elegant nature of the body of the piece is juxtaposed with the unbridled pathos introduced at the beginning and ending of the chart.

Groove rich rhythm section with soulful Rhodes piano, Synths, Bass and Vocal. This catchy soulful house track will be the new dance floor anthem that will take people back to the 90s where good songwriting and soulful groove reign supreme. This track is certified HIT ready. This track will get people to singalong and dance.
Kyle Kim is the awesome half of the Asian Soulful House Duo 'KAI & KYLE'. With his first EP being graced with remixes by the legends like Kerri Chandler, MJ Cole, Souldynamic, Kyle Kim's productions have always reached high in soulful house charts.

06:40 Hidden Hues: KG – I’d rather leave this piece up to your own interpretation and not explain it fully. There are two main contrasting themes in this piece, one that is downtrodden and reticent and one that is uplifting. This composition features Christian Ortiz on the bass clarinet.
15:57 Moment’s Notice: AD - This piece, written by the great saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, is an iconic tune in the jazz repertoire. “Moment’s Notice” was recorded in 1957 and released on Coltrane’s album Blue Train in 1958. The chord changes in “Moment’s Notice” are important because they were a precursor to Coltrane’s signature “Coltrane changes,” which were an influential set of chord changes that Coltrane used as substitutions for more common jazz chord changes. In my arrangement of the melody, I tried to keep the essence of the original while using some of my own rhythmic ideas and reharmonizations. However, we will be improvising over Coltrane’s fast-moving and harmonically challenging chord changes.
24:47 As The Tides Shift: AD - When writing this piece, I thought of the volatility of the tides and the unflinching force of the ocean. If you have ever taken a walk on a beach next to a cliff, you may have realized as you were walking back the way you came that the tide had suddenly risen to a point where there is barely room to walk back on the sand (although there is plenty of room to swim). With this experience in mind, I tried to reflect the constant motion of the tides with repeated rhythmic motives and floating melodic lines. While composing, I drew on influences from some of my favorite modern-day saxophonists and composers, such as Ben Wendel, Logan Richardson, and Walter Smith III.
32:40 After You’ve Gone: KG - A popular song composed in 1918 by Turner Layton. I arranged this piece to be the quintessential opening number for this recital. The arrangement is up-tempo, high energy, and features Aaron on alto saxophone throughout. The focus of this chart was to feature improvisation, which is why the first three choruses are solo sections with backgrounds that push and pull Aaron in different directions. The final chorus of the arrangement is the first time we hear the melody, although the backgrounds were derived from motives in the melody. The piece concludes with the pointillistic stacking of a diminished scale followed by a “cute” ending.
35:27 Red’s Blues (Purple): KG - It’s a pun…This chart was my first original blues and it was a lot of fun to write. The form is AABA where the As are a blues and there is a contrasting bridge. I wanted to feature another friend of mine, Nicholas Olynciw, on piano as well as Aaron and myself. While writing this piece I tried place myself somewhere in the style between Billy Byers and Thad Jones, two composers who worked extensively in this style of writing.
43:06 Incantation: KG – This composition starts with ominous fifths in the piano and is then joined by the reedy sound of a soprano saxophone in its lower register. This slow section at the beginning of piece is the prologue and was designed to evoke the sinister nature of someone casting a spell on another, thus the title Incantation. The piece then continues through many different sections and themes. The main theme is hopeful, but then a change in tonality quickly takes that away. We continue with this battle between hope and despair until it culminates in its ultimate moment of tragedy when we enter a phrygian section that is concluded when the soprano saxophone solo by Aaron is complete. After the darkest point in this piece I introduce a heralding new theme in the trumpets that takes us out of the despairing mood and instills hope once again. The new hopeful theme twists and turns between minor and major tonalities showing the constant struggle of trying to lift yourself up and constantly being dragged down. The piece ends heroically; the story seemed more complete that way. We end on a massive maj7 chord, and there are very intentional dissonances in the chord because although there is a happy ending it is tinged with some degree of despair.
