Russian Invasion of Crimea: Crimean Tatar leader vows to return home to occupied peninsula
The spiritual leader of Crimea's Tatar population has reportedly been barred by Russia from the occupied Black Sea peninsula. Mustafa Dzhemilev was born in Crimea in 1943, but was deported under Stalin's purge of Tatars from the territory. Tatar icon Dzhemilev became a Soviet dissident and resistance leader, eventually leading the Tatars back to their homeland in 1989. Dzhemilev led the Tatar boycott of the discredited referendum in pro-Kremlin referendum in Crimea held on March 16. The occupied Ukraine territory is home to over 200,000 Tatars, who make up around 12 per cent of the population.- published: 22 Mar 2014

Tatars fear Soviet style purge under Putin
As residents of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula prepare to vote on the future of the Black Sea region this weekend, ethnic Tatars have raised concerns over their future. Many have set up neighbourhood watch patrols and mosques have even been used as command centres. During the Second World War, Soviet tyrant Joseph Stalin ethnically cleansed Crimea of the Tatar population.- published: 15 Mar 2014

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Crimea's Tatars — who amount to 12 percent of the peninsula's 2.2 million residents — overwhelmingly boycotted the March 16th referendum for Crimea to become part of Russia. The Tatar's bad history with Russia was a major factor of their decision, as Stalin persecuted and deported them en masse from the Crimean Peninsula in 1944. After the collapse of the Soviet Union Tatars trickled back into Crimea, but their status there was always temporary. With Crimea's much-disputed status as part of Russia following the referendum, the future of the Tatars is a big question mark. VICE News' Simon Ostrovsky spent some time with Tatars in Simferopol in the week leading up to the referendum to get their side of the story. Ethnic cleansing of Crimean Tatars by Russians
Remarks by Borys Wrzesnewskyj, former MP for Etobicoke-Centre, on the illegitimate referendum in Crimea and ethnic cleansing of Tatars from Catherine the Great to Stalin, Toronto, Canada, 17 March 2014. - You cannot have a free and fair vote under (Russian) military occupation - 0:42 No legitimacy when the population is intimidated. - 0:55 The purpose has been to provide a veneer of legitimacy for a military invasion and occupation of Ukraine by Russian President Vladimir Putin. - 1:20 Feodosiya (Феодосія), Crimea, Ukraine - 1:35 Russian soldiers without insignias with machine guns putting together voters lists? - 1:45 Participation of Crimean referendum - 2:08 Demographics of Crimea: Russian Ukrainians, Ukrainians, Crimean Tatar Ukrainian population - 2:32 Crimean Tatars did not participate in the charade - 2:53 Crimean Tatars have an especially important voice. The propaganda machine has said (Crimea) is traditional Russian land, historic Russian land - This is not true. - 3:10 History of Crimea. Historically, Crimea is Tatar. Tatars are the indigenous people of Crimea who were occupied by the Russian empire. - 3:59 Deportation of Tatars: Crimean Tatars suffered an ethnic cleansing bordering on genocide by Stalin (during World War Two, WW2) but suffered ethnic cleansing going back to the time of Catherine the Great (Екатерина II Великая). We should have a special sensitivity because of their tragic history under Russian occupation This video was not sponsored. 2014 Russian military intervention in Ukraine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Russian_military_intervention_in_Ukraine 2014 Crimean crisis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Crimean_unrest Crimea (Крим) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Crimea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimean_Tatars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deportation_of_the_Crimean_Tatars Ukrainian history, Crimean history, Russian history, Crimean identity.- published: 19 Mar 2014

Tatars in Crimea protest against vote to join Russia
Crimean Tatars held protests in the peninsula on Friday ahead of a referendum to join Russia. Around 500 demonstrators took to the streets demanding President Vladimir Putin ''go away'' and for ''Russian soldiers to return home''. Native to Crimea, the minority Tatars branded Sunday's poll illegal vowing a boycott of the break-away ballot. "We are in Crimea, which has always been, is and will be part of Ukraine. We don't need Russia, we don't need their help, nor do we need their protection. ...
