When we made the move from the Heavy Industries lab in Kalamazoo up to Grand Rapids, we had to take him out of service while we prepared his new home. Being so heavy, we had to cut out, dig down, and refill a large concrete slab that could handle the force of his full working weight! It took several months and lots of awesome sponsors (Rockford Construction, Diamond Concrete Sawing, Rust-Oleum, Consumers Concrete) donating their services, but now Project Jeff is finally up and running once again. In the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics at Johns Hopkins University, we have developed a prototype system for programming and interacting with an industrial robot using an immersive virtual interface. We use the Oculus Rift for stereo display and head tracking as well as the Razor Hydra for motion control. The user can move and program either a simulation of the robot, or use the simulation as a proxy to control the robot live. The user can also interact with interactive 3D virtual widgets, such as menus and other objects to help program the robot, or give it information about its environment. This is part of an ongoing project at Hopkins called IVRE: the Immersive Virtual Robotics Environment. Visit http://cirl.lcsr.jhu.edu/ivre for more information. For those of you who have an Oculus Rift, we will be posting a version of this video without the overlays so you can see the raw stereo view. Engelberger in 1956, and was based on Devol's original patents. Unimation robots were also called programmable transfer machines since their main use at first was to transfer objects from one point to another, less than a dozen feet or so apart. They used hydraulic actuators and were programmed in joint coordinates, i.e. the angles of the various joints were stored during a teaching phase and replayed in operation. They were accurate to within 1/10,000 of an inch. Unimation later licensed their technology to Kawasaki Heavy Industries and GKN, manufacturing Unimates in Japan and England respectively. For some time Unimation's only competitor was Cincinnati Milacron Inc. of Ohio. This changed radically in the late 1970s when several big Japanese conglomerates began producing similar industrial robots.

An industrial robot is defined by ISO as an automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulator programmable in three or more axes. The field of robotics may be more practically defined as the study, design and use of robot systems for manufacturing (a top-level definition relying on the prior definition of robot).
Typical applications of robots include welding, painting, assembly, pick and place (such as packaging, palletizing and SMT), product inspection, and testing; all accomplished with high endurance, speed, and precision.
The most commonly used robot configurations are articulated robots, SCARA robots, Delta robots and Cartesian coordinate robots, (aka gantry robots or x-y-z robots). In the context of general robotics, most types of robots would fall into the category of robotic arms (inherent in the use of the word manipulator in the above-mentioned ISO standard). Rodney Allen Brooks (born December 30, 1954, in Adelaide, Australia) is the former Panasonic professor of robotics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since 1986 he has authored a series of highly influential papers which have inaugurated a fundamental shift in artificial intelligence research. Outside the scientific community Brooks is also known for his appearance in a film featuring him and his work, Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control. He is now the chairman and chief technical officer for Heartland Robotics in Boston Mass.
In his paper, "Elephants Don't Play Chess.", Brooks argued that interacting with the physical world is far more difficult than symbolically reasoning about it. Symbolic computational approaches to creating intelligent machines had long been the focus of AI since the days of Alan Turing, directly tracing back to the work of Gottlob Frege. Brooks focused instead on biologically-inspired robotic architectures (e.g., the subsumption architecture) that address basic perceptual and sensorimotor tasks.
