When We Left Earth - The NASA Missions
The story of how the space missions evolved from the X-15 fighter jet in 1959 to get people into space is explained. The programs began with the Mercury missions: 7 men were selected to carry the first astronaut into space "on top of a rocket capsule". There was a rush because of competition with Russia: initially not much was known (a) whether the rockets would work, and (b) whether man could survive in space. At the beginning an ape called "Ham" was the first animal that flew. Eventually Alan Shepard was selected, BUT it is learned that the Soviet Union had been the first nation to put a man in space: Yuri Gagarin. Then John Glenn was selected in 1962 for the longest mission:5 days of weightlessness. He takes off but runs into trouble - the world waits - but the Friendship 7 flight worked and "it was obvious that the Russians are not beating us". The process moves on to a more scientific set of missions, led by Scott Carpenter, called the Aurora program. More problems arise, but are overcome. Aurora 7 is recovered. The next program are the Gemini launches, and here president Kennedy announces the goal of flying to the moon and back.Ten missions are planned. John Young and Gus Grisman are chosen. A new launch missile, the Titan was scary - "the rocket was like a controlled explosion". Engineers fix the problems. In March 1965, "it was white knuckles" when Gemini 3 was launched but the astronauts were recovered. The next big challenge was "walking in space", also known as EVA - Extra Vehicular Activity. During this time weightlessness was tested using a specially modified plane called "the vomit Comet". Spacesuit design was another problem - going from 250 degrees above zero to 250 degrees below zero rather quickly. There was still competition with the Soviets, and NASA rushed matters. It was "a risky business" with EVA training performed in secret. On Gemini 4, in 1964, Ed White made the first EVA. Then it was the "Rendezvous" effort where two spacecraft could coordinate for an eventual moon landing. Gemini 6 and Gemini 7 came within 20 feet of each other for 3 orbits. Then Gemini 7 travelled 6 million miles in 14 days. The effort weakened the astronaut's legs. Finally Dave Scott and Neil Armstrong demonstrated docking in 1966 in the Gemini 8 flight. There were problems, but recovery was achieved. There were 4 Gemini missions left. Gene Cerman and Tom Stafford flew Gemini 9. It didn't work. Neither did more Gemini attempts. Finally Buzz Aldrin, who practised weightless motion under water, on Gemini's final mission, Aldrin conducted three successful EVAs. Since 1981, NASA space shuttles have been rocketing from the Florida coast into Earth orbit. The five orbiters - Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour - have flown more than 130 times, carrying over 350 people into space and travelling more than half a billion miles, more than enough to reach Jupiter. Designed to return to Earth and land like a giant glider, the shuttle was the world's first reusable space vehicle. More than all of that, though, the shuttle program expanded the limits of human achievement and broadened our understanding of our world. It all started with STS-1, launched on April 12, 1981, just twenty years to the day after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. When astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen launched that morning in Columbia, it was the first time in history a new spacecraft was launched on its maiden voyage with a crew aboard. For an entire generation, the space shuttle was NASA. We've watched a parade of firsts - Sally Ride, Guy Bluford, Kathy Sullivan, John Glenn and others. A magnetic filament of solar material erupted on the sun in late September, breaking the quiet conditions in a spectacular fashion. The 200,000 mile long filament ripped through the sun's atmosphere, the corona, leaving behind what looks like a canyon of fire. The glowing canyon traces the channel where magnetic fields held the filament aloft before the explosion. Visualizers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. combined two days of satellite data to create a short movie of this gigantic event on the sun. In reality, the sun is not made of fire, but of something called plasma: particles so hot that their electrons have boiled off, creating a charged gas that is interwoven with magnetic fields. These images were captured on Sept. 29-30, 2013, by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, which constantly observes the sun in a variety of wavelengths. Different wavelengths help capture different aspect of events in the corona. The red images shown in the movie help highlight plasma at temperatures of 90,000° F and are good for observing filaments as they form and erupt. The yellow images, showing temperatures at 1,000,000° F, are useful for observing material coursing along the sun's magnetic field lines, seen in the movie as an arcade of loops across the area of the eruption. The browner images at the beginning of the movie show material at temperatures of 1,800,000° F, and it is here where the canyon of fire imagery is most obvious. By comparing this with the other colors, one sees that the two swirling ribbons moving farther away from each other are, in fact, the footprints of the giant magnetic field loops, which are growing and expanding as the filament pulls them upward. Though a lunar eclipse can be seen only at night, it's worth staying up to catch the show. The next lunar eclipse visible from the western hemisphere will take place in the early morning hours of April 15, 2014, from about 2:00 am - 5:30 am Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). NASA's Swift satellite has acquired the highest-resolution view of the neighboring spiral galaxy M31. Also known as the Andromeda Galaxy, M31 is the largest and closest such galaxy to our own. It's more than 220,000 light-years across and lies 2.5 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. Between May 25 and July 26, 2008, Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) acquired 330 images of M31 at wavelengths of 192.8, 224.6, and 260 nanometers. The images represent a total exposure time of 24 hours. Some 20,000 ultraviolet sources are visible in the image, including M32, a small galaxy in orbit around M31. Dense clusters of hot, young, blue stars sparkle in the disk beyond the galaxy's smooth, redder central bulge. Star clusters are especially plentiful along a ring about 150,000 light-years across.

In its first year of operations, NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has mapped the entire sky with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity in gamma-rays, the highest-energy form of light. On May 10, 2009 a pair of gamma-ray photons reached Fermi only 900 milliseconds apart after traveling for 7 billion years. Fermi’s measurement gives us rare experimental evidence that space-time is smooth as Einstein predicted, and has shut the door on several approaches to gravity where space-time is foamy enough to interfere strongly with light.

Billions of years ago when the Red Planet was young, it appears to have had a thick atmosphere that was warm enough to support oceans of liquid water - a critical ingredient for life. The animation shows how the surface of Mars might have appeared during this ancient clement period, beginning with a flyover of a Martian lake. The artist's concept is based on evidence that Mars was once very different. Rapidly moving clouds suggest the passage of time, and the shift from a warm and wet to a cold and dry climate is shown as the animation progresses. The team that will conduct NASA's first mission to collect samples from an asteroid was given the go-ahead to start building the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, flight instruments and ground launch support facilities, thanks to a successful Mission Critical Design Review. OSIRIS-REx (Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer) is scheduled to launch in 2016 to the asteroid Bennu and return to Earth with a sample of the asteroid in 2023. The mission seeks answers about the organic materials of the early solar system that made life possible here on Earth. NASA's Alien Anomalies caught on film - A compilation of stunning UFO footage from NASA's archives
This compilation includes many of my favorite NASA UFO encounters/sightings that I have archived over the years. All of these examples (with the exception of the second-to-last one) were captured on film by NASA astronauts or Russian Cosmonauts over the past half-century - showing many amazing examples from different eras - Gemini, Apollo, Apollo/Soyuz Test Project, Skylab, STS, the ISS, plus a couple Russian-source additions from their unmanned Zond and Mir Space Station programs as well thrown in to round things out. The second last example is the only one in the compilation that features footage that was not taken in space and is not official-source (NASA or Soviet/Russian Space Agency). That clip shows an LTP (Lunar Transient Phenomenon) event captured through a camera connected to the eyepiece of a terrestrial-based telescope that luckily was being focused on the Moon at the time. In this case, the LTP manifests as an object transiting across the face of the lunar disc. Many thanks to amateur astronomer Alberto Mayer of Italy for doing a wonderful job of filming this stunning event (and for stacking the footage for us all to see). While the examples you will see here captured on film can all be "officially" classified as "unidentified" objects, that absolutely does NOT mean that NASA, the DoD, and certain elements within the scientific community worldwide are completely in the dark as to what these things you are seeing are. Make no mistake: The Powers That Be are indeed aware of far more about our mysterious Universe than they are ever willing to admit to us. We, the plebeian masses of this planet, are being held in a state of enforced ignorance, deemed not worthy of knowing the full truth by those who are REALLY "running the show" down here on Earth. As this video shows over and over again however, there are indeed snippets of that amazing truth that have been left scattered about the official government archives over the decades, there for us to find so we may begin to educate ourselves about what is the most monumental coverup in human history - where the only thing more incredible than the lies is the truth!
