New Music Releases: Nickel Creek, Leon Russell, and Cloud Nothings Bluegrass trio Nickel Creek return from its hiatus with A Dotted Line; the legendary Leon Russell releases Life Journey, an album dotted with mostly cover songs; and lo-fi pop outfit Cloud Nothings bring on John Congleton to produce their latest, Here and Nowhere Else. This week's New Releases Roundup is no joke, we've got three of our top album picks for the first week of April. Regrouped bluegrass trio Nickel Creek leads the week with their latest, A Dotted Line, their first album since two thousand and five. During the band's hiatus the members kept busy with solo albums and the bands Fiction Family and the Punch Brothers. Legendary session musician Leon Russell has been working with the biggest names in music since the late sixties, but has continued to hold his own as a solo artist, steadily releasing music on his own label into his seventies. Life Journey, his latest, has two original tracks and 10 covers of songs from artists like Billy Joel, Paul Anka and Duke Ellington. Lo-fi pop band Cloud Nothings are releasing Here and Nowhere Else, their fourth record since twenty ten. Instead of working with analog champion Steve Albini again, the band recorded their new album in Hoboken with producer John Congleton, who has worked recently with Saint Vincent, Xiu Xiu, Black Angels and the Polyphonic Spree. New Music Releases: Shakira, Liars, Miles Davis Shakira drops her self-titled album, which also happens to be her tenth, Liars return with "Mess," an electro-pop departure from their earlier work, and Miles Davis's iconic Fillmore performances get a much deserved official box set. We've got a different type of March Madness over here at AllMusic, and it includes our bracket for this week's best new album releases. Colombian pop star and The Voice judge Shakira is releasing her new self-titled album this week, which is her tenth overall. The album's first single, "Can't Remember to Forget You," featuring Rihanna, has already made a splash with its racy video. Fellow judge Blake Shelton also makes an appearance on the album. Mess, the latest from Brooklyn-based indie rock band Liars, shows the band continuing to hop between different genres, this time embracing more of an electro-pop approach, in contrast to their earlier material, which was more guitar-based. Finally, jazz legend Miles Davis has a new live set coming out, consisting of four shows he performed in 1970, two months after the release of his pioneering fusion album, Bitches Brew. The shows had previously been condensed into a single live album, but now all four performances are being released in full in a four-disc set. New Music Releases: Off!, EMA, and Carlene Carter Drop New Albums This Week Off! and EMA both debut their second album, while Carlene Carter makes it a family affair with new interpretations on her family's songs. Hungry for new music? Look no further — we've got a feast of fresh albums in this week's New Releases Roundup. The punk band Off - featuring members of Black Flag, Rocket from the Crypt and Burning Brides - is releasing its second album, Wasted Years, this week. This time the band cut the sixteen-song album live in the studio, and the result is one of the most raw punk albums so far this year. Distorted guitars and a range of electronic sounds feature throughout The Future's Void, the second album from E-M-A. The blending of her elastic, sometimes processed voice and music that ranges from harsh to gentle makes for an intensely original recording. Carlene Carter of the Carter Family, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, is putting out an album of new interpretations of her family's songs. Carter Girl features twelve tracks from her family's songbook, and includes guest appearances from Vince Gill, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. New Album Releases: Katy Perry, Brandy Clark, DJ Khaled Debut New Music This Week! The AllMusic New Releases Roundup is back! Get the details on this week's new music highlights: Katy Perry's Prism, Brandy Clark's 12 Stories, and DJ Khaled's Suffering from Success. The AllMusic New Releases Roundup is back! Let's get right to the good stuff. Teenage Dream Katy Perry follows up the five number one singles of her last album with Prism. Perry has proven to be a bona fide pop star, and with her latest she shows there's substance beneath her sugary shell. We're excited about another lady-centric album this week, Brandy Clark's 12 Stories. After writing hits for folks like Miranda Lambert and LeAnn Rimes, the sharp scribe sets out on her own for the first time, and the result is a slab of sly, strong country. Finally, let's go from the country to the club with the new one from DJ Khaled. With a title like Suffering from Success he sets the bar high, delivering a set of bangers backed with an astounding lineup of guests like Timbaland and Nicki Minaj. New Music Releases: Dum Dum Girls, David Crosby, and Gaslight Anthem Drop New Albums Dum Dum Girls debut new tracks, just ahead of their upcoming Coachella appearance, David Crosby returns to the limelight after a two-decade hiatus, and Gaslight Anthem release a compilation of live tracks and covers. Welcome back to the New Releases Roundup, your weekly look at some of the biggest albums in music this week. The Dum Dum Girls' third album, Too True, comes out this week, and finds the band's lo-fi indie pop with a sixties influence still intact. In March the band will hit the road for an extensive tour en route to the Dum Dum Girls' appearances at this year's Coachella Festival. Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee David Crosby is releasing Croz, his first album since nineteen-ninety-three. In a musical career spanning fifty years, it's only Crosby's fourth solo album. Croz features guest appearances from Mark Nopp-fler of Dire Straits and jazz legend Win-tin Marsalis. New Jersey's Gaslight Anthem have released The B-Sides, an aptly named collection of live tracks and covers, as a stop gap release before the band's next full length, which is due later this year. The B-Sides features covers of songs from Pearl Jam, the Rolling Stones, and acoustic versions of the Gaslight Anthem's own material. New Music Releases: Toni Braxton, Broken Bells, and Nicole Atkins all Return In this week's New Release Roundup, Toni Braxton teams up for the first time with Babyface, the Broken Bells return with a sophomore effort, and Nicole Atkins tries on the singer/songwriter moniker. This is AllMusic, and welcome to your New Releases Roundup for the first week of February, twenty-fourteen. They've worked together extensively over the years, but for the first time, Toni Braxton and Babyface have collaborated on a full album of duets. Love, Marriage and Divorce has already created a number one hit on the adult R and B charts with Hurt You, and the album's themes of heartbreak and lost love make it a very subtle Valentine's Day gift. Broken Bells, the indie pop duo featuring Danger Mouse and James Mercer of the Shins, releases After the Disco this week, the follow-up to their twenty-ten debut. Head over to the AllMusic blog to check out live performances of two of the album's tracks. Singer Nicole Atkins returns with her third record, Slow Phaser, this week. She re-teamed with Torie Johansson, the producer of her acclaimed two thousand and seven debut, Neptune City, for a set of eleven songs that find Atkins tinkering with the singer-songwriter blueprint. New Music Releases: Kylie Minogue, Foster the People, and The War on Drugs Kylie Minogue drops her twelfth studio album, "Kiss Me Once," Foster the People team up with Paul Epworth for their latest, "Supermodel," and The War on Drugs release "Lost in the Dream." In this week's New Releases Roundup, we're bringing you up to speed on 3 new albums that will help ease the pain of your St. Patrick's Day hangover. 'Kiss Me Once' is the twelfth studio album from the seemingly ageless Kylie Minogue. The album shows the Australian pop star continuing her hot streak with another collection of catchy, uptempo dance tracks, with a few ballads providing contrast. And if you haven't had enough of him already in 2014, Pharrell Williams shows up for "I Was Gonna Cancel," one of the album's best songs. Foster the People try to re-create the success of their hit "Pumped Up Kicks" on 'Supermodel,' and ended up expanding their musical palette to include psychedelia, dance music, Beach Boys harmonies, and Afro pop. 'Supermodel' was produced by Paul Epworth, best known for working on award-winning albums with Adele and Bruno Mars. Philadelphia indie rock band The War on Drugs are releasing 'Lost in the Dream,' their best album so far and third overall. Taking cues from a number of classic rock icons like Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, the album is filled with musical surprises and depth. We're three weeks into twenty-fourteen and the music just keeps on coming. Here's a quick look at this week's New Releases Roundup. Against Me returns with Transgender dis-foria Blues, which packs ten songs into a tight twenty-nine minutes. It's the band's first release since singer and songwriter Tom Gay-behl came out as trans-gender and began to transition into Laura Jane Grace, and the songs tell the story of Laura's journey. For all the Americans who were Beatles fans the first time around and have been frustrated that the original American versions of the albums haven't been given the reissue treatment, your wait is over. The U-S albums set covers every stateside Beatles release, featuring different tracklists, album covers, and sometimes even different mixes from the British versions. Long running Latin rock band Los Lonely Boys are releasing their fifth studio album this week, Revelation. Get the lowdown! The first release from the A-List in twenty-fourteen, Bruce Springsteen's 'High Hopes' is a collection of covers and updated versions of his own material. Since guitarist Steven Van Zant was busy filming his Netflix series Lily-Hammer, Springsteen enlisted Rage Against the Machine's Tom Mo-Rellow to appear on most of the album, including a vocal duet between the two on "The Ghost of Tom Joad." After a year and a half on baby duty, Sugar Land's Jennifer Nettles returns to the music world with her solo debut, 'That Girl.' The album is based on her collaborations with other songwriters, including Richard Marx, Butch Walker and Sara Buh-Rell-Es, as well as a cover of Bob Seger's "Like a Rock." The release of 'Give the People What They Want,' the latest from Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, arrives this week, after being postponed when Jones was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in twenty-thirteen. Recorded before her illness, the album is 10 cuts of what Jones and the Dap Kings do best - pure soul, funk and R and B.- published: 12 Jan 2014

New Music Releases: Joan As Policewoman, Aloe Blacc, & Metronomy Drop New Albums! Spring is upon us, and so are these hot new albums. Joan As Policewoman returns to the scene with her fourth album, Aloe Blacc unleashes his retro-soul flavor, and England's Metronomy debut Love Letters. Spring is upon us, and in this week's New Releases Roundup, we have the scoop on 3 new albums that will pull you from hibernation. The Classic is the fourth album from Joan as Policewoman, and finds band leader Joan Wasser creating some of the most accessible music of her career. The alternative singer-songwriter's mix of clarity and sensuality makes for an engaging listen that toys with genre expectations. Aloe Black made a splash with the twenty-ten song "I Need a Dollar," which was a hit seemingly everywhere except for America. Now the rapper turned singer is back with Lift Your Spirit, another collection of upbeat retro-soul songs. The ubiquitous Pharrell Williams shows up on the song "Love is the Answer," one of the album's highlights. English band Metronomy got their start performing breezy synth pop, but on their latest, Love Letters, they up the urgency of their sound and with some soul and psychedelic rock influences. It's a more raw record than anything the band has attempted, and shows off the band's increasingly sophisticated songwriting. Those are just a few of our top picks for the week.
