Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The high walls, electric fences, and private security guards surrounding South Africa's residences and businesses are as inherent to the country's landscape as Table Mountain is to Cape Town. And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings. Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces. VICE News traveled to South Africa's mother city Cape Town to look at the lifestyle gap between those who can and cannot afford the luxury of safety. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Aussie teens Dillan and Hannah will be staying with South African couple Andrew and Charnell de Kock, who believe the key to bringing up angelic kids is through clean living and the strict moral teachings of the Mormon faith. Andrew imports medical technology, while wife Charnell is a part-time student counselor and special needs teacher. Three of their four children are students while the eldest is a missionary in Uganda. "Our religion isn't just something we go to on Sunday, it's a way of life," says Andrew. "We are trying to live a Christ-like life." And in the de Kock house, this means plenty of rules. "We have rules with internet access, we have rules with behaviour and code of conduct, we have rules with language, we have rules with interaction with people around them, we have rules with chores," says Charnell. "The rules are there for them and for us to function in society and to function as a family." The de Kock kids can only watch PG rated television. Andrew and Charnell also keep a close eye on the music they listen to, the movies they watch and the company they keep. "We monitor their friendships - that's important," says Charnell. This family has its own 10 point code of conduct, incorporating trust, work and respect. Every child in the de Kock family is expected to strictly abide by this code. "Teenagers have too much freedom," says Andrew. "And as a result I feel that they perhaps are behaving in a way that is unbecoming of decent young men and young women." The de Kocks believe a healthy body is as important as a healthy mind. You won't find any tea, coffee or cola in their house. As a matter of fact, you won't find any caffeinated drinks or foods that are considered addictive. "It's important to fill the body and mind with wholesomeness," says Charnell. Andrew adds, "We'd like to show Hannah and Dillan that happiness can be found by adherence to principals."- published: 30 Jan 2014

We hear from the inhabitants as they eloquently argue their case for real citizenship rights. The shack dwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo, began in 2005. Their slogan is 'Talk to us, not about us.' 'It's not that people like to live in shacks. No one will ever want to live in these conditions but they need to be close to their work' explains S'bu Zikode, Abahlali's elected leader. However, the group has not been welcomed by the ANC. They've been met with aggression rather than with negotiations. Police shot Mariet Kikine with six rubber bullets at a peaceful demonstration. 'I'm not stopping to fight the government for my rights. Now they've made me brave.' In the build-up to the 2010 soccer World Cup, Durban shack dwellers fear they will be bulldozed out of the city, or arrested. 'This new legislation makes it a crime to build shacks or resist demolition and eviction.' But the shack dwellers are determined not to give up. White Poverty (in the New South Africa)
More than 40 000 whites, of a total 4,5 million South Africans are currently classified as absolutely poor and live in informal settlements. Shacks and tents can be found on farms hidden far away from the public eye. Occasionally you may see a white beggar at the traffic lights, but in general most South Africans deny that there is such a thing as white poverty. This is the story of several white families who have lost their jobs and fallen into poverty as a consequence of preferential treatment for blacks. They are known as the "poor whites," a group that hardly gets discussed but that is rapidly increasing in size. Director Saskia Vredeveld follows an older couple that tries to help by picking up food at the supermarkets and meat auction and handing it out to the poor. They do not get any financial support from the government for their work, and it is only thanks to their determination that they manage to keep their heads above water. They bring us along to Coronation Caravan Park, an encampment just outside of Johannesburg where a large group of primarily white people live in wretched conditions. Two weeks ago they killed six of his horses. He says: "I call the police and they do nothing." Three months ago he gave up his farming activities: the constant harassment from what he believes comes from his former black farm labourers just became too much. He has a wife and a daughter and fears for their lives. For 13 years he was a successful farmer, growing horse-feed. He says: "Last week they raped a woman near here: they poured a kettle of boiling water over her back. I think they saw she was not afraid when she told them 'if they wanted sex they must use a condom'." Russia TV reports that Farm killings have hit record highs since Mandela took power in 1994: Quoting statistics from www.GenocideWatch.Org which says more than 4,000 white farmers have already been murdered since 1994. The journalist also notes that "Also, ten times that number of white people have already been murdered in a campaign of violence." An hour 's drive from Basson's farm, farmer Cornelius Nel has been farming with cattle and maize. He is convinced the ANC government is running the campaign to kill them all and drive them off their land. He clearly grieves, saying he has paid the ultimate price: his daughter Venessa, 33, was shot dead at his farm. "They only took her gun which they used to shoot her'. She was shot dead in front of her two small children. He says: "The government says they are going to take our farms every day because they say we have stolen the land,' said Nel. An ANC propagandist also was interviewed in the same programme. He claims that the fear of whites is unfounded and that 'everybody is treated equally.' The Russia TV journalist also -- and incorrectly -- said that most whites are the rich and most blacks are the poor. The fact is that of South Africa's 3,4-million Afrikaners, more than a million now are so impoverished that they are battling to survive in hundreds of little squatter camps all over South Africa -- denied access to the job market under the ANC regime's anti-white Black Economic Empowerment laws."- published: 18 Jan 2014
