Runaway Teen flies from California to Hawaii hidden in wheel well of aircraft
HONOLULU -- A 16-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from California to Hawaii on Sunday, surviving the trip halfway across the Pacific Ocean unharmed despite frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen, FBI and airline officials said.

FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport with no identification.

Rescuers and families of those aboard the stricken South Korean car and passenger ferry that sank off the country\'s southwest coast on Wednesday haven\'t given up hope of finding more people alive among the hundreds unaccounted for.

The Sewol ran into trouble during the 14-hour journey from Incheon to the southern resort island of Jeju early Wednesday morning. About four hours from its destination, the ship was sailing in thick fog, which may have obscured the crew\'s vision. At 8.30 a.m. it appears as though the ship it struck a large rock, puncturing its hull.

Passengers described hearing a loud sound on impact and a experiencing sharp jolt. The ship tilted suddenly, causing luggage to fall from overhead storage shelves. Many people jumped into the frigid water as they realized the ferry was sinking.

The crew sent out a distress signal and nearby ships responded. But survivors say a message broadcast over the ship\'s PA system telling people to stay in place may have worsened the situation. One passenger said that even as water inside the ship began to rise they were told not to move. Others were rescued by fishing boats and military ships with helicopters which raced to the scene. Once the Sewol began taking on water it took just two hours to fully capsize.

In the panic and chaos, one highschooler identified only by her last name, Shin, texted her father: \

Almost 300 people remain unaccounted for after a ferry carrying 459 people capsized and sank off South Korea.

The ferry, carrying mainly school students, was travelling from the port of Incheon, in the north-west, to the southern resort island of Jeju.

A major rescue effort is under way, involving dozens of ships and helicopters. Those brought to safety were taken to a nearby island.

Three people are now said to have died and at least 13 others have been hurt.

South Korean officials had earlier said that 368 people had been plucked to safety, but later said there had been a counting error.

They have now revised down the number rescued to 164.

Images showed the ferry listing at a severe angle and then later almost completely submerged, with only a small part of its hull visible. It sank within two hours of sending a distress signal, reports said.

Cause unclear

Several coast guard, military and commercial vessels were involved in the rescue effort, which unfolded rapidly on Wednesday morning.

16-year-old stowaway survives unharmed in wheel well of California-Hawaii flight
  • Order:
  • Duration: 1:09
  • Updated: 21 Apr 2014
Runaway Teen flies from California to Hawaii hidden in wheel well of aircraft HONOLULU -- A 16-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from California to Hawaii on Sunday, surviving the trip halfway across the Pacific Ocean unharmed despite frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen, FBI and airline officials said. FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport with no identification. "Kid's lucky to be alive," Simon said. Simon said security footage from the San Jose airport verified that the boy from Santa Clara, Calif., hopped a fence to get to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 on Sunday morning. The child had run away from his family after an argument, Simon said. Simon said when the flight landed in Maui, the boy hopped down from the wheel well and started wandering around the airport grounds. "He was unconscious for the lion's share of the flight," Simon said. The flight lasted about 5 1/2 hours. Hawaiian Airlines spokeswoman Alison Croyle said airline personnel noticed the boy on the ramp after the flight arrived and immediately notified airport security. "Our primary concern now is for the well-being of the boy, who is exceptionally lucky to have survived," Croyle said. Simon said the boy was medically screened and found to be unharmed. "Doesn't even remember the flight," Simon said. "It's amazing he survived that." A call and email message to a Mineta San Jose International Airport spokeswoman were not immediately returned. Officials at Kahului Airport referred questions to the State Department of Transportation, which did not return a phone call seeking comment. A Transportation Security Agency spokesman who declined to be named referred questions to the FBI and airport authorities. A veteran of Myanmar's pro-democracy movement Win Tin has died at the age of 85. The former newspaper editor was one of the founder members of the Anug San Suu Kyi led National League for Democracy. Win Tin's political activities led to his arrest by the ruling military in 1989. He spent 19 years in prison, mostly in solitary confinement, and his incarceration was twice extended. Win Tin was released in 2008. As a mark of defiance he continued to wear his prison uniform in solidarity with t... South Korean ferry disaster: Hundreds still missing in Sewol sinking

The Sewol ran into trouble during the 14-hour journey from Incheon to the southern resort island of Jeju early Wednesday morning. About four hours from its destination, the ship was sailing in thick fog, which may have obscured the crew's vision. But survivors say a message broadcast over the ship's PA system telling people to stay in place may have worsened the situation. One passenger said that even as water inside the ship began to rise they were told not to move. Others were rescued by fishing boats and military ships with helicopters which raced to the scene. Once the Sewol began taking on water it took just two hours to fully capsize. In the panic and chaos, one highschooler identified only by her last name, Shin, texted her father: "Dad, don't worry. I've got a life jacket on and we're huddled together." Her father replied "I know the rescue has begun but make your way out if you can." Shin wrote back, "Dad I can't walk out, the corridor is full of kids and it's too tilted." Shin's name is not among the list of people rescued. Witnesses say many people might still be alive, trapped within the upturned ferry. But it lies in 30m deep water. The water is murky, reducing visibility to less than half a meter, hampering the rescue. What's more, people likely trapped in air pockets must deal with the icy water, which can cause hypothermia in as little as 90 minutes. Rescue teams earlier hammered on the ship's hull hoping for a response from trapped survivors, and divers have taken to the water ... but hope is fading. The Sewol has a capacity of 912 people. 475 passengers and crew were aboard, including 324 high schoolers on a field trip. When disaster struck, many of those people were gathered in the Sewol's entertainment center, on the third floor of the five-deck ship. When it capsized the third deck was fully submerged. It's believed a power outage soon after would have left many of them in darkness. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cause unclear Several coast guard, military and commercial vessels were involved in the rescue effort, which unfolded rapidly on Wednesday morning.
