Almost 300 people remain unaccounted for after a ferry carrying 459 people capsized and sank off South Korea.

The ferry, carrying mainly school students, was travelling from the port of Incheon, in the north-west, to the southern resort island of Jeju.

A major rescue effort is under way, involving dozens of ships and helicopters. Those brought to safety were taken to a nearby island.

Three people are now said to have died and at least 13 others have been hurt.

South Korean officials had earlier said that 368 people had been plucked to safety, but later said there had been a counting error.

They have now revised down the number rescued to 164.

Images showed the ferry listing at a severe angle and then later almost completely submerged, with only a small part of its hull visible. It sank within two hours of sending a distress signal, reports said.

Cause unclear

Several coast guard, military and commercial vessels were involved in the rescue effort, which unfolded rapidly on Wednesday morning.

Algeria\'s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has won a fourth term in office taking more than 81% of the vote, the interior minister has said.

The 77-year-old leader, who suffered a stroke last year and rarely appears in public, cast his vote in a wheelchair in Thursday\'s presidential election.

He beat his five other opponents without personally campaigning.

Turnout was said to be 51.7% of the country\'s 23 million registered voters, down from the 75% in 2009.

A coalition of Islamist and secular opposition parties had called for a boycott, describing the election as a sham and saying Mr Bouteflika was unfit to run because of his health problems.

Three other presidential candidates pulled out of the race soon after Mr Bouteflika\'s candidacy was announced, saying the result would be a foregone conclusion.

His re-election bid also spawned a protest movement called Barakat, meaning \

Russia, Ukraine, the US and the European Union have agreed to a de-escalation of tensions in eastern Ukraine. After meeting for seven hours in Geneva, Switzerland, all of the parties signed an agreement condemning violence, promising reforms of the Ukrainian constitution and offering amnesty to protesters who leave seized government buildings and turn over their weapons. Representatives from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe will be allowed to monitor the deal\'s implementation. Lindsay France speaks to RT\'s Egor Piskunov, who attended the signing and breaks down the details of the agreement.

Christians around the world are preparing for the Easter holiday, which marks the day followers believe Jesus Christ rose from the dead. In Jerusalem, thousands of worshippers celebrated the Holy Fire ceremony, packing into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the holiest spots in the Christian world, to light candles as a celebration of the miracle that preceded Christ's resurrection.

Cause unclear Several coast guard, military and commercial vessels were involved in the rescue effort, which unfolded rapidly on Wednesday morning.

Abdelaziz Bouteflika Wins Presidential Elections In Algeria
Abdelaziz Bouteflika Wins Presidential Elections In Algeria

  • Updated: 18 Apr 2014
Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has won a fourth term in office taking more than 81% of the vote, the interior minister has said. The 77-year-old leader, who suffered a stroke last year and rarely appears in public, cast his vote in a wheelchair in Thursday's presidential election. He beat his five other opponents without personally campaigning. Turnout was said to be 51.7% of the country's 23 million registered voters, down from the 75% in 2009. A coalition of Islamist and secular opposition parties had called for a boycott, describing the election as a sham and saying Mr Bouteflika was unfit to run because of his health problems. Three other presidential candidates pulled out of the race soon after Mr Bouteflika's candidacy was announced, saying the result would be a foregone conclusion. His re-election bid also spawned a protest movement called Barakat, meaning "Enough", which has been holding small demonstrations around the country. 'Transparent and neutral' Mr Bouteflika's main challenger, Ali Benflis, received 12% of the vote, Interior Minister Tayeb Belaiz said. "The people have chosen freely, in a climate that was transparent and neutral," the AFP news agency quotes him as saying. Mr Benflis, who ran Mr Bouteflika's campaign in 1999, has rejected the result , alleging "serious irregularities". Correspondents say supporters of the president were already celebrating his victory on Thursday evening, with fireworks in the capital Algiers. Mr Bouteflika took office in 1999 when Algeria was still caught up in a civil war between the military and Islamist militants, and has been credited by supporters for curbing the conflict and restoring some economic stability. He scrapped constitutional rules in 2008 limiting him to two terms in office, and won elections the following year with 90% of the vote.

Israel hands Palestinians proposal to extend peace talks | BREAKING NEWS - 31 MARCH 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Israel on Sunday handed the Palestinians a proposal aimed at extending peace talks beyond a 29 April deadline, as efforts to salvage the negotiations came to a head. The fate of the US-brokered peace process could be decided within days, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier, warning that "either the matter will be resolved or it will blow up". Netanyahu's remarks to ministers from his rightwing Likud party came as US officials were working around the clock to prevent a collapse of the negotiations over a dispute about Palestinian prisoners. "In any case, there won't be any deal without Israel knowing clearly what it will get in exchange," Netanyahu said. According to a Palestinian official, Israel presented Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas with a draft agreement to push forward with the talks. Abbas was to examine the proposal during the night, he said. An Israeli official would not provide details on the proposal but told AFP: "Now the Palestinians need to reply if they are willing to continue negotiations." With the talks teetering on the brink of collapse, Washington has been fighting an uphill battle to coax the two sides into accepting a framework proposal that would extend negotiations beyond 29 April. But the issue has become tied up with the fate of 26 veteran Palestinian prisoners whom Israel was to have freed this weekend under the original terms agreed to relaunch talks. Israel on Friday informed the Palestinians it would not free the prisoners, with the US State Department confirming it was working "intensively" to resolve the dispute. US officials said Secretary of State John Kerry, in Paris on Sunday, spoke with Netanyahu and later told reporters in the French capital that it was not yet appropriate for the US to make any public judgement about the situation "at this important moment". "It's really a question between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and what Prime Minister Netanyahu is prepared to do," he added. US State Department sources did not rule out the possibility that Kerry could fly from France to the Middle East if necessary on Monday. Kerry himself said "we'll see where we are tomorrow (Monday) when some judgements have to be made."
