Skellig Michael (Chapter 9)
One of the "Chapters" from our April 2007 trip to Ireland. Skellig Michael (or Greater Skellig) is an island a few miles off the coast of the Iveragh Peninsula. A monastery was founded there around 600 AD and was active until about 1200 AD. You have to climb over 800 stone steps to get there. This was a once in a lifetime experience. There are three Skellig Islands. Little Skellig appears a number of times (especially at the end) and is home to thousands of gannets. If you are planning on visiting the Skelligs, I highly recommend the Portmagee Heights B&B; in Portmagee. The opening shots are from the backyard, so the views are incredible, but we had a lovely room that managed to be both modern and comfortable and the full Irish was one of the best. Ring of Kerry (Chapter 7)
This is the seventh installment of our Ireland 2007 videos. This chapter covers our three days on the Iveragh Peninsula. After leaving Killarney National Park we headed towards Kenmare to drive clockwise around the Ring of Kerry. Our intent was to stop in either Portmagee or Ballinskellig in order to try and arrange a trip to Skellig Michael. The scenery was incredible on that first day, but the sadly the fog was kind of thick making it difficult to appreciate. We decided to spend the night in Ballinskellig and the Ballinskellig Inn (an old hotel with a fabulous pub attached). We woke up to a spectacular sunrise and then hiked down the beach to Ballinskellig Castle. After breakfast we called the captain and he said that the tides were low, but the weather was perfect so he said to meet at the docks at noon. With some spare time we backtracked towards Caherdaniel to take advantage of the clear sunny skies. Thank goodness we did, because we had no idea what we had missed in the fog. Back at the pier, we were disappointed to find that the tide was at a seasonal low and that the boat that would have taken us was beached. Rather dejected we set off towards Portmagee. We had originally planned to leave Iveragh after Skellig Michael, but decided that we didn't want to miss it so we found a room in Portmagee (at the lovely Portmagee Heights). After hiking all over Valentia Island (See Chapter 8) we drove around the Ring to Cahersiveen where we visited the stunning ruins of ...

Ballyhearney House, Valentia Island, County Kerry, Erin
John O'Sullivan of Valentia Island, County Kerry, Ireland will be opening the Famine Hospital (also known as the Cholera Hospital) in the Spring of 2011. To the east of the hospital is a line of trees planted along a considerable creek by the Knights of Kerry (en.wikipedia.org This video begins with a view from Valentia (Isle of Oaks) across Portmagee Channel to Iveragh Peninsula. (Notice: the hands of people that work the land. Much seen around here; and lovely for the stories that they tell.) Shannon goes on to express his opinion in the Great Famine and the preceding Famine. God bless Oliver Cromwell, Idi Amin, Benjamin Disraeli, Winston Churchill, and good ole Adolfo himself. May they rest in hell. Not the most academic opinion in the world, but it's mine damn it! IMG_4399.MOV

Ireland: The Ring of Kerry
On Day #4 of our trip to Ireland we spent the day driving the Ring of Kerry around the Iveragh Peninsula in southwest Ireland. The views were stunning, too brilliant for Hi8 footage to do them justice. (Music by Liam O'Flynn)
