Whats Happening!! was around for about 2 and a half years. Still, it remains in a lot of our minds. Mostly because of Dee, the smart ass daughter. She made that show. The others were mildly funny. Shirley Hemphill was good though, but the fat jokes ran thin. Dont get me going on Rerun. Manomanomanoman. Characters do NOT get more annoying than this guy, and according to our pals at The Smoking Gun, he isnt finished yet.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.

Mabel King
Mabel King (born Mabel Elizabeth Washington December 25, 1932 – November 9, 1999) was an American film, stage, and television actress, and singer. She is best known for her role as Mabel "Mama" Thomas on the ABC sitcom What's Happening!! from its premiere on August 5, 1976 until the end of its second season on May 11, 1978.
Her next most-remembered role is that of Evillene the Witch, a role she originated in the stage musical The Wiz and reprised in Sidney Lumet's film adaptation.
Early life
King was born Mabel Elizabeth Washington in Charleston, South Carolina, the daughter of Rosalie Washington and Joseph Washington. She was raised in Harlem, New York where she eventually became a gospel and nightclub singer.
Career
Stage work
She did not start acting until her mid thirties, in 1966, when she played the role of Maria in the national touring play of Porgy and Bess. The following year she played the role of Ernestina in the Broadway musical/comedy Hello, Dolly!. Then in 1972, she appeared in the Broadway musical Don't Play Us Cheap. The following year, 1973, she appeared in the film version of the play. That same year she played the Queen of Myrthia in the horror film Ganja & Hess. In January 1975, she played the role of Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West in the all-African-American cast of the Broadway musical The Wiz. The role earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for outstanding featured actress in a musical. Her performance in The Wiz brought her much attention and soon after she received roles in the films The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, with Billy Dee Williams and James Earl Jones, and Scott Joplin, with Billy Dee Williams and Clifton Davis. In June 1980, King returned to stage work, starring in the Broadway musical It's So Nice To Be Civilized. However the show did not do well and was cancelled after eight performances.

The Wiz
The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a musical with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls (and others) and book by William F. Brown. It is an urbanized retelling of L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of modern African-American culture. It opened on October 21, 1974 at the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to the Majestic Theatre with a new cast on January 5, 1975.
The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical was an early example of Broadway's mainstream acceptance of works with an all-black cast. The musical has had revivals in New York, London, San Diego and the Netherlands, and a limited-run revival was presented by Encores! at New York City Center in June 2009. A big-budget film adaptation of the same name was released in 1978 and has since become a cult classic. A live television production of the stage show, The Wiz Live!, was broadcast on NBC on December 3, 2015, with an encore presentation on December 19 of the same year.

Mabel is an English female given name derived from the Latin amabilis, "lovable, dear".
History
Amabilis of Riom (d. 475) was a French male saint who logically would have assumed the name Amabilis upon entering the priesthood: his veneration may have resulted in Amabilis being used as both a male and female name or the name's female usage may have been initiated by the female saint Amabilis of Rouen (d. 634), the daughter of an Anglo-Saxon king who would have adopted the name Amabilis upon becoming a nun.
The vernacular French form Amable was brought by the Normans to the British Isles where both Amabel and the abbreviated Mabel were common during the Middle Ages to subsequently become obsolete apart from Mabel remaining in regular use in Ireland where it was perceived as a variant of the Celtic name Maeve.
Mabel's modern usage was subsequent to the 1853 publication of the novel The Heir of Redclyffe by Charlotte M. Yonge which featured a character – who was Irish – named Mabel Kilcoran; Yonge's novel also features a character named Amabel but her novel only boosted the popularity of the name in the form Mabel which became immensely popular in both the British Isles and the United States.

Whats Happening!! was around for about 2 and a half years. Still, it remains in a lot of our minds. Mostly because of Dee, the smart ass daughter. She made that show. The others were mildly funny. Shirley Hemphill was good though, but the fat jokes ran thin. Dont get me going on Rerun. Manomanomanoman. Characters do NOT get more annoying than this guy, and according to our pals at The Smoking Gun, he isnt finished yet.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.

The Wiz is the original motion picture soundtrack album for the 1978 film adaptation of the Broadway musical The Wiz. Although the film was produced for Universal Pictures by Motown Records' film division, the soundtrack album was issued on MCA Records as a two-LP collection (Universal was owned by MCA Inc. at the time). Chiefly produced by Quincy Jones,[2] The Wiz soundtrack features non-sync cast performances by the stars of the film, including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Theresa Merritt, Thelma Carpenter, and Lena Horne.
Like many musicals of the period, the performances in the soundtrack album are not those used directly in the film, but re-recorded by the same artists at an earlier and/or later date. Several differences are noted including Michael Jackson's line and a Nipsey Russell scat section being dropped in "A Brand New Day" among others. The song "Is This What Feeling Gets?" was not used in the film's final cut, though the tune is used throughout the film.

The Wiz is the original motion picture soundtrack album for the 1978 film adaptation of the Broadway musical The Wiz. Although the film was produced for Universal Pictures by Motown Records' film division, the soundtrack album was issued on MCA Records as a two-LP collection (Universal was owned by MCA Inc. at the time). Chiefly produced by Quincy Jones,[2] The Wiz soundtrack features non-sync cast performances by the stars of the film, including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Theresa Merritt, Thelma Carpenter, and Lena Horne.
Like many musicals of the period, the performances in the soundtrack album are not those used directly in the film, but re-recorded by the same artists at an earlier and/or later date. Several differences are noted including Michael Jackson's line and a Nipsey Russell scat section being dropped in "A Brand New Day" among others. The song "Is This What Feeling Gets?" was not used in the film's final cut, though the tune is used throughout the film.

Whats Happening!! was around for about 2 and a half years. Still, it remains in a lot of our minds. Mostly because of Dee, the smart ass daughter. She made that show. The others were mildly funny. Shirley Hemphill was good though, but the fat jokes ran thin. Dont get me going on Rerun. Manomanomanoman. Characters do NOT get more annoying than this guy, and according to our pals at The Smoking Gun, he isnt finished yet.

Van Peebles also penned the rousing rhythm-and-blues score, which includes the songs "Saturday Night," "Ain't Love Grand" and "If You See a Devil, Smash Him."

Mabel was in Oslo last week to play new music from her upcoming album, so we met up with the singer to show her some Scandinavian music videos from Norwegian Korbz, Danish NODE and Swedish Thrife. Here's what she had to say about the three videos.
Mabel McVey, mononymously known by her stage name Mabel, is a Spanish-born Swedish-British singer and songwriter based in London. Born in Málaga, Spain and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, she is the daughter of singer and songwriter Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack record producer Cameron McVey. She now mostly lives in London.
Mabel is mostly known for starting her own musical career in 2015 with her debut single entitled "Know Me Better". She is also known for the 2017 hit "Finders Keepers" and the associated music video, as well as working repeatedly with renowned songwriter and record producer Joel Pott. She has since released her 2017 debut extended play (EP) Bedroom, a 2017 mixtape Ivy to Roses with the song "Begging", and is working on her unnamed debut album coming in 2018.
Our "Reacts To Scandinavian Rap Videos" is a series where we promote new Scandinavian rap videos & artists, so the music we pick is often new (max 2-3 year old). We also try to pick new artists pr episode, and somewhat match the artists picked with the artists watching the videos. Photos Courtesy NBC. Talk about a tough audience. Thursday, Dec. 3rd NBC television's live production of The Wiz couldn't have fallen on more cynical eyes; mine ... She was perfection. I HAD to do that ... And while she was terribly miscast in the role, the movie still was a thing of camp and wonder not being done at its time and Michael Jackson's performances were so great, along with Nipsey Russell, Lena Horne, Mabel King...oh, the talent ... ....
