Hundreds of Baltimore citizens gathered outside the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on Wednesday, to attend a free open-air concert performed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The performance was coined as a 'concert for peace,' after the city witnessed clashes following protests over the death of Freddie Gray.
Violence broke out on Monday April 27, just hours after the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died in police custody on April 19, 2015. Gray's family say he suffered a severe spinal injury, that his voice box was crushed and his neck was snapped before he went into a coma and died. Police reports indicate that these injuries were sustained after his arrest.

Welcome to Philadelphia, considered the birthplace of the United States.
The Declaration of Independence was written and read publicly here in 1776. When you tour Philadelphia, you’ll get a sense of the history that permeates the city through its numerous monuments, symbols, and other landmarks, such as the First Bank of the United States and the warship USS Olympia. Don’t forget to stop by the Liberty Bell and the remains of the Eastern State Penitentiary, which housed notorious criminals like Al Capone.
You don’t need a car to enjoy your Philadelphia sightseeing; take public transportation or rent a bike to explore the city streets at your leisure. Fairmount Park is the perfect place for a stroll, and if you’ve got kids, bring them to the Please Touch Museum, where they can enjoy interactive exhibits and displays that will educate and entertain. If you’ve still got some energy after that, visit the Philadelphia Zoo and make friends with some of the animals. Don’t forget to sample some of the delicious food available in Philadelphia, particularly the fresh goods and cooked meals at the Italian Market.
From culinary delicacies to historical importance, Philadelphia truly has it all.

10. Barcelona - The city is a pioneer in smart city and low-carbon solutions.
9. Hong Kong - The city has also been a leader in the use and adoption of smart cards, which are already used by millions of residents for services like public transit, library access, building access, shopping, and car parks.
8. Copenhagen - The city has committed to carbon neutrality by 2025 and 40% of its citizens regularly commute via bicycle.
7. Berlin - Berlin is testing out vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies in the hopes of creating a virtual power plant from electric vehicles.
6. Tokyo - The city will create a smart town in the suburbs in partnership with major industry. The eco-burb will contain homes that integrate solar panels, storage ba tteries, and energy efficient appliances all connected to a smart grid.
5. London - also scored relatively high across the board. London has been well-recognized for some of its sustainability innovations (i.e. congestion tax) and its robust transit system.
4. New York - New York scored higher than most other cities in the ranking in all of the categories except of quality of life, where it ranked a poor 47th. It has teamed with innovator IBM to help the city prevent fires and protect first responders as well as identify questionable tax refund claims--a move that is expected to save the city about $100 million over a five-year period.
3. Paris - Paris already has a highly successful bike sharing program, Velib, and just last month, its mayor launched a similar model for small EVs called Autolib.
2. Toronto - smartest city in NA, scored well across the board, it is an active member of the Clinton 40 (C40) megacities, which seek to transition to the low-carbon economy. The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency.
1. The smartest city in the world is Vienna - Vienna was the only city that ranked in the top 10 in every category. It is establishing bold smart-city targets and tracking their progress to reach these goals with programs like Smart Energy Vision 2050, Roadmap 2020, and Action Plan 2012-2015.
A smart city is defined as using information and communication technologies to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.
The rankings were determined by the cities scores on 4 global categories: Innovation, Green ranking, Quality of life and digital city.

Leave the regular world behind when you step into the fog-swathed “City by the Bay.” From shopping adventures in Union Square to a trip on the city’s legendary cable cars, a trip to San Francisco is bound to leave you with incredible memories.
Stop by Fisherman’s Wharf and indulge in its shops and galleries, as well as some of the best fresh seafood you’ll ever taste. Walk on the Golden Gate Bridge and take in the fresh sea air and views of the bay and Pacific Ocean. If it’s a more serene environment you’re after, pass through the stately architecture and flowing lagoon of the Palace of Fine Arts.
Of course, San Francisco sightseeing isn’t complete without an excursion to Alcatraz, the island prison that once held some of the country’s most notorious criminals. Look into its empty cells and thick stone walls and wonder, could you escape “The Rock”?

Welcome to Denver, also known as The Mile-High City due to its position above sea level.
Any visit to this one-time mining town needs to include its rich, lengthy history. Start out your Denver tour at the Golden Triangle to explore civic architecture and public art and museums. For a closer look at the city’s past, go to the Denver Art Museum to see over 18,000 Native American artifacts, as well as a number of items commemorating and celebrating the region itself. Plus, no Denver exploration is complete without visiting the animals at the Denver Zoo, which is home to cheetahs, penguins, and a host of other critters.
Remember how we talked about the history of Denver? Go way, way back in that history when you bring your kids (or just yourself) to Dinosaur Ridge, where you can walk past some pretty impressive thunder lizards. If all those scaled wonders whet your appetite to learn more about the region, pack up your boots and head up the road…and into the Wild West. You’ve reached Golden, an old mining town chock full of shops, exhibits, galleries, and of course, the Buffalo Bill Museum.
After exploring everything the Old West has to offer, head back to civilization, where you can sample elk steak or Rocky Mountain oysters at the Buckhorn Exchange. Once you’re done with dinner, head outside and meet up with the relaxed, friendly population, who are eager to welcome you to their lovely city.
Visit our Denver travel guide page for more information or to plan your next vacation!

Central to Our Outstanding Quality of Life
From the stage of the historic Hippodrome Theatre in west Baltimore, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz called for County residents to come out and support the world class arts and cultural attractions in Baltimore City.
“Those of us who live in Baltimore County know how important the city is to the entire region. We benefit from the exceptional arts and cultural attractions just down the road from county residents,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. “Let’s stand together in support of our neighbors.”
Baltimore Arts Just Down the Road LogoKamenetz noted that last year Baltimore County residents visited Baltimore City arts and cultural attractions over 687,000 times.“That is why Baltimore County provided $2.8 million in grants this year to support arts, sciences and humanities non-profits in the Baltimore region. The Walters, the National Aquarium, Center Stage and the Baltimore Symphony are as central to our outstanding quality of life as the Orioles and the Ravens.”
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake applauded this regional call to support Baltimore City cultural attractions.
“We are all one region. There is so much good in Baltimore City that is good for Baltimore County, and vice versa," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. "I appreciate the County Executive's recognition of that fact and his efforts to encourage Baltimore County residents to support the amazing array of arts opportunities in Baltimore City." http://tinyurl.com/povo7vb

MARK O'CONNOR'S AMERICANA SYMPHONY 'VARIATIONS ON APPALACHIA WALTZ' Recorded by Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony.
http://www.markoconnor.com
The principal players:
Mark O’Connor - Grammy-winning violinist and composer of the Americana Symphony – a 32-minute, six movement work for large symphony orchestra (no soloist). Composed in a 10-month period in 2006 and later recorded by Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 2009.
John Fielder - nationally renowned nature photographer, publisher, teacher, and environmentalist who has worked tirelessly to promote the protection of Colorado’s open space and wildlands.
Fielder is the photographer of more than 40 coffee table, guide, and children’s books, all about Colorado. He might be best known for creating Colorado’s best-selling book ever, Colorado: 1870 – 2000, which juxtaposes historic photographer William Henry Jackson’s images of the 19th-century landscape with those of today. Read more here http://markoconnorblog.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-americana-symphony-project.html
VI. SPLENDID HORIZONS – The final movement begins with an introduction in transition from the struggle of the mountain face to the iridescent vistas seen from this vantage point. The self-determination of the homesteaders in their efforts to reach the Pacific has been unyielding and momentous. As the horns in the orchestra introduce the Appalachia Waltz theme, the feelings and memories of the journey, people and their own cultures that will stay with them are invoked. After the orchestra takes the chorus refrain of the theme to a triumphant peak, the strings take the last strains of the “A” part again. One by one, the string players fall away and discontinue playing, until at the last phrase of the piece, the trio of the violin, cello and bass are left. What the listener hears is the sound of the original piece performed by Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and me. The orchestra joins for the final note of the melody before more motivic refrains offered by the winds, strings, brass and percussion bring a final crescendo that joyously celebrates spirit, wonder, renewed optimism and hope for a brighter future. - Mark O'Connor

Choral piece composed in 2012 by Pullitzer winning composer Kevin Puts. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop.
If I Were a Swan
I would ride highabove my own white
weight. I would ride
through the lightening
of the earth
and the darkening,
stillness and turbulence
coming on in the core
of me, and spreading
to the hard rain,
to the dazzle. Leaves
would turn, but I
would keep my eyes
in my head, watching
for grasses. This
is what I would know
deeply: the feathering
of my bones
against the bank.
For the rest,
I would be the easiest
wave, loving just enough
for nature’s sake.
The world would move
under me and I would always be exactly
where I am, dragonflies
angling around my head.
Under the black mask
of my face, I would think
swan, swan,
which would be nothing
but a riding, a hunger,
a ruffle more pointed
than wind and waves,
and a hot-orange
beak like an arrow.

"The dark night of the soul" is the name I personally give to the second movement of this symphony. The first movement is rather pastoral, and it's wide ranging harmonic regions and clear melodic structure give it a reconciliatory and forgiving atmosphere.
However, things take a turn for the worse in the second movement (starting at 21'35"). This is the only one of all the Pettersson symphonies which is divided into two separate sections. The scenery is darkened by the arrival of threatening danger. This danger can be anything that has relevance in our own individual life experiences. For Pettersson, it was probably the onslaught of the pain of the rheumatoid arthritis to which he was already a victim. Amidst the sinister atmosphere, a struggle gradually ensues, leading into a stormy interlude. But there is no triumph. The music sinks into a long night of restless pain and suffering. One senses the relentless pangs of incessant pain. The music is structured in a complex and ingenius way so typical of Pettersson's skill.
After another failed attempt to overcome the adversity (starting at 39'45"), the music subsides into a lengthy conclusion of hopeless despair - perhaps one of the most sad and poignant conclusions ever to be be committed to a serious work of this nature.
In depth psychology we are informed that a dark night such as this is followed by it's opposite, some kind of compensation, some kind of learning, a new strength. The dark night is replaced with a dawning of new light and refreshment. This reward is not given to us in this symphony. That special song, the living waters of life, Pettersson keeps for later. He is not finished with us yet. There are another seven symphonies to go!
This file is a revision of my earlier uploads which offered two separate videos for each movement. Here the movements are combined, and the audio is improved, with less vinyl clicks. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Sergiu Comissiona, recorded in 1980.
I thank my viewers for all their kind comments made on my earlier uploads!

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and its Music Director Marin Alsop have challenged students from Parsons The New School for Design - http://www.newschool.edu/parsons - and its sister school, Mannes College The New School for Music - http://www.newschool.edu/mannes - to envision the future of orchestral performance.
The resulting work debuted in an event that brings together music, fashion and technology in new and innovative ways. The yearlong collaboration is led by Parsons faculty members, fashion designer Gabi Asfour of threeASFOUR and wearable technology designer Sabine Seymour, with support from Richard Kessler, dean of Mannes College.
The fashions, designed by students in the Integrated Design program at Parsons, bring together new and vintage garments to create performance wear that is sustainable and responsive to the way musicians move and play. Wearable technology, designed by students in the School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons, is being incorporated into several of the looks. This technology will demonstrate how the performance itself can be enhanced by new means of visual expression, with the garments and performance space itself serving as a canvas for motion and sound-activated digital projections.
