Ukraine: First signs of Spring blossom in Maidan
The first sprouts of radishes, lettuces, onions, dill, and parsley are already visible in vegetable gardens set up in Kiev's Maidan Square, Thursday. People who have been camping out on the square for over a month planted the vegetables and have started building pigsties and hen houses, where they plan to breed animals. Meanwhile, the restoration of the square's pavement is underway. A total of 14,000 square kilometres (5,500 square miles) are expected to be paved, with a budget of around 70 billion hryvnas ($6,387,000/€4,625,000). Brazil: Anti-government protesters chant "There will be no World Cup!"
Hundreds of civilians marched the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday to protest what they call the government's negligence of the public sphere and in turn, its' investment into the World Cup. Many chanted that there will be no world cup while others burned football jerseys belonging to the Brazilian team. The FIFA World Cup 2014 is due to take place in Brazil from June 12 to July 13. Russia: Crimea added to Russian maps
Cartographers in Moscow were busy Friday redrawing maps, reflecting the addition of Crimea to the Russian Federation. Crimea has been added to maps of Russia on the official websites of the Russian president and the Russian government. From March 24, Russia's largest search engine, Yandex, and other Russian map vendors began to designate Crimea and the city of Sevastopol as new parts of the Russian Federation. On the website of Russia's Federation Council, Crimea is also shown as part of the Russian Federation. Spain: Hundreds of migrants storm Melilla border
Some 800 migrants attempted to enter Spain across a border fence in the northern African territory of Melilla, early on Friday morning. According to Spanish authorities, only a dozen people managed to cross from the Moroccan side; the rest were intercepted by Spanish and Moroccan security forces. The migrants divided themselves into several groups and tried to cross the border across different pats of the perimeter. Spanish authorities said four people suffered minor injuries in the attempt. Two Spanish exclaves in northern Africa, Melilla and Ceuta, regularly witness attempts by migrants to cross into the European Union. Just one day before, authorities said they had managed to block a mass crossing of around 1,000 migrants. Ukraine: Right Sector stands strong outside parliament
Supporters of the Right Sector group outside Kiev's parliament building grew in number on Friday morning, as they demanded the resignation of Rada-appointed interim Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, who they hold responsible for the death of their leader Oleksandr Muzychko. Maidan self-defence units gathered outside the Rada at the same time as the Right Sector supporters. Meanwhile, Ukrainian security officials met and Rada-appointed President Oleksandr Turchynov announced a vote on the future of the interior minister. Roughly 1,500 Right Sector members had surrounded the Rada on Thursday evening, and threatened to storm the building over Muzychko's death during a police raid in the western city of Rovno on Monday. Spain: Protest against Education Minister ignite tensions
Over 20,000 students marched down the streets of Madrid to Peurta del Sol on the second day of a 48 hour-strike oganised by the Spanish Student Union Thursday. Protesters were demanding the resignation of Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert along with an end to education austerity measures. Protests against education cuts have been building momentum with Education Minister Wert at the focus of the movement. Wert enacted legislation that protesters say is a huge step towards the privatising of Spain's education. USA: Marilyn Monroe leaves hot Californian desert for Jersey Shore
Around a thousand people gathered at Marilyn Forever Park on Thursday in Palm Springs to send-off the Marilyn Monroe sculpture across the nation. The 26 foot 34,300-pound painted metal blonde statue will be flown to Hamilton New Jersey, where it will take part in an exhibition honouring it's creator Seward Johnson. The original 'Lorelei Lee' Carol Channing of the broadway production "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" attended the ceremony and joined the choir in a sing-along. The statue was meant to depart the Californian desert on June 2013, but the owner, a Santa Monica-based Sculpture Foundation, gave the city a few extensions. The sculpture is based on the photograph by Bruno Bernard taken during the 1955 filming of "The Seven Year Itch.'' Germany: Strike action leaves Frankfurt airport empty
Along with Cologne-Bonn, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Munich airports, Frankfurt airport on Thursday looked almost deserted as public sector workers staged a strike organised by the German workers union Verdi. Propelled by demands for the government to increase staff pay, the industrial action has also affected other regional transport staff and childcare workers across Germany, with at least 1,400 members of staff at Frankfurt airport taking part in the walkout. Trade unions want pay rises of 3.5% plus an extra €100 ($140) per month for about 2.1 million federal and municipal public sector workers. Turkey: Imam turned singer wants to revolutionise music
Ahmet Muhsin Tuzer, imam turned musician, held a small concert in Istanbul Saturday in which he promoted his album and performed his famous song 'Taleal Bedru.' Tuzer said he wants to break the boundaries of music, calling his album revolutionary. Tuzer's music fuses rock with sufi mysticism. Tuzer's first single "Mevlaya Gel" (Come to God) has been viewed more than 30,000 times on Youtube. Turkey's state-funded religious affairs directorate Diyanet, which oversees more than 80,000 Turkish mosques, has started an inquiry into the Tuzer's actions, investigating whether his musical messages are un-Islamic. USA: Does this ring spell the end of the touchscreen?
Logbar Inc showcased their touchscreen destroying 'Ring', a wearable input device that enables users to type a text in mid-air, at The Product Innovation Showcase, in San Francisco, Wednesday. The technology has been hailed as ushering in the new era of consumer convenience, with some dubbing it "the magic wand." Using the 'Ring' people can type merely by gesturing with their finger. Based on bluetooth technology, the ring can integrate with numerous devices at a time - with unique gestures specific to each device. Each assignment is customisable, for example, one can draw an envelope in the air to open emails. The product will hit the shops on July 2014 at the prize of $185 (€135). The Product Innovation Showcase is an event created to help celebrate and spur innovation in North America. Brazil: Rio's women fight back with Israeli self-defence lessons
With high rates of street attacks, rape and domestic violence, women in Rio de Janeiro are taking matters into their own hands and attending Krav Maga self-defence classes. The classes are organised by the South American Krav Maga Federation, which offers free training in the Israeli military-developed self-defence technique. While the Brazilian government encourages women to speak out and denounce violence, women participating in initiatives like this, like student Caroline Ramos, say they want to train in fighting techniques and defend themselves rather than suffer. Turkey: Tiger Woods teeing off shuts down Istanbul One side of the Bosporus Bridge which connects Europe and Asia in Istanbul was closed for an hour on Tuesday, as golf superstar Tiger Woods teed off from the bridge for the opening of the Turkish Airlines Open 2013 golf tournament. With the stunt, he became the first known golfer to hit balls from Asia to Europe. It was initially announced that the bridge would be closed for five hours. However, after a wave of negative reactions, Istanbul governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu tweeted late Monday that traffic would be halted only between 14.00. and 15.00 local time (12.00 and 13.00 GMT). Drivers were diverted to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. The 37-year-old will travel to the city of Antalya on the Mediterranean coast to face Europe's finest for a €848,930 ($1.15m) first-place prize at the Turkish Airlines Open, taking place at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal course.- published: 05 Nov 2013
