In Central African Republic, South Sudan and Syria, staying ahead of famine is imperative

Ban Ki-moon’s April 14 op-ed commentary, “A ticket out of misery,” must stir us all to action. The Central African Republic stands on the brink of famine. We need to support the World Food Program, UNICEF and other agencies before it’s too late. Since funding has been so low, food rations have already been reduced for war victims. These relief agencies depend on voluntary donations from governments and the public. With the country’s food-supply system destroyed by the conflict, a pipeline of aid needs to be filled.

Every day we wait gives malnutrition a stronger hold on the population. The damaging effects of this malnutrition are often irreversible. We don’t want to say later that we should have acted sooner. We need to stay ahead of the famine in the Central African Republic — and in South Sudan and Syria.
