Tom Nyuma (born in Kailahun, Kailahun District, Sierra Leone) is a retired Sierra Leonean military commander and currently the chairman of Kailahun District council from the opposition Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP). He was elected as chairman of Kailahun District council on July 6, 2008 with 87% of the vote. Nyuma remains very popular in the Southern and Eastern regions of the country.
He was at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces before he retired. Nyuma was one of the young officers in the Sierra Leonean army that mastered and plan to ousted the currupted Joseph Saidu Momoh lead All People's Congress (APC) government on April 29, 1992, and they established the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC). During the NPRC administration Nyuma was the commander of the Eastern Province. He is a member of the Kissi ethnic group and an alum of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio U.S.A.
He was deported from the United States in 2007.
Thomas Peter "Tom" Lantos (February 1, 1928 – February 11, 2008) was a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from 1981 until his death, representing the northern two-thirds of San Mateo County and a portion of southwest San Francisco. Lantos had announced in early January 2008 that he would not run for reelection because of cancer of the esophagus, but died before finishing his term. Lantos was the only Holocaust survivor to have served in the United States Congress.
In speaking before the House of Representatives after his death, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that Lantos "devoted his public life to shining a bright light on the dark corners of oppression. . . He used his powerful voice to stir the consciousness of world leaders and the public alike." U2 lead singer Bono called him a “prizefighter,” whose stamina would make him go “any amount of rounds, with anyone, anywhere, to protect human rights and common decency."
In 2008, after his death, the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, which he founded in 1983, was renamed the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. Its mission is partly to "to promote, defend and advocate internationally recognized human rights." In 2011, the Tom Lantos Institute was set up in Budapest to promote tolerance and support minority issues in central and eastern Europe and in the world.
Lieutenant General Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa was a Rwandan Army former Chief of Staff who fled to South Africa in February 2010 after being accused of involvement in terrorist activity within Rwanda. Nyamwasa had formerly been head of Rwandan intelligence. He had also served as Rwanda's ambassador to India. Married to Rosette Kayumba, he has three sons and a daughter (Philbert Runanira, Moris Muvunyi, Marc Manzi and Phiola Tesi Kayumba). He had fled the country after being accused of attempting to build a power base in the army. The Rwandan government later stated that he may have been working with Colonel Patrick Karegeya, another former intelligence head who was living in exile in South Africa. Nyamwasa was accused of involvement in acts of terrorism in Rwanda, including three grenade attacks in Kigali on 19 February 2010, but was not arrested in South Africa due to a lack of extradition treaties between the two countries.
In June 2010 Brigadier General Jean Bosco Kazura, head of the Rwandan Football Federation, traveled to South Africa to see the World Cup and allegedly contacted Nyamwasa. Kazura was recalled and placed under arrest, although an army spokesman said this was purely because he had failed to obtain permission to travel.
