Virgil Thomson (November 25, 1896 – September 30, 1989) was an American composer and critic. He was instrumental in the development of the "American Sound" in classical music. He has been described as a modernist, a neoclassicist, a composer of "an Olympian blend of humanity and detachment" whose "expressive voice was always carefully muted" until his late opera Lord Byron which, in contrast to all his previous work, exhibited an emotional content that rises to "moments of real passion", and a neoromantic.
Virgil Thomson was born in Kansas City, Missouri. As a child, he befriended Alice Smith, great-granddaughter of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. After World War I, he entered Harvard University thanks to a loan from Dr. Fred M. Smith, the president of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and father of Alice Smith. His tours of Europe with the Harvard Glee Club helped nurture his desire to return there. At Harvard, Thomson focused his studies on the piano work of Erik Satie. He studied in Paris on fellowship for a year, and after graduating, lived in Paris from 1925-40. He eventually studied with Nadia Boulanger and became a fixture of "Paris in the twenties."

Simplistic. Out of touch. Unfashionable. These are some of the descriptions assigned to Virgil Thomson's music. It is true his music doesn't veer far from the ear's comfort zone, but the listener is hard-pressed to find art music that is as down to earth and quintessentially American as his. In fact, Thomson wrote music that was instrumental in informing the styles of several of his colleagues, not the least of which is Aaron Copland. The Symphony on a Hymn Tune was completed in 1928. There are actually at least a couple of hymns that surface throughout the piece, the main one being a Scottish melody that is commonly associated with the text for "How Firm a Foundation". You can also hear "Jesus Loves Me" finding its way through the tapestry of this first symphony by a composer whos...

This work was completed in 1950. The outer fast movements are lively expressions of the American spirit. However, it is the slow second movement that seems to be most memorable with its odd but attractive harmonic layout. It's almost hard to believe this is Virgil Thomson. Performed by Yehuda Hanani (Cello) and the RTE National Symphony Orchestra Conducted by William Eddins Included with this recording is music for cello and orchestra by William Perry and William Schuman. 'The Plow That Broke the Plains' was a 25-minute documentary film, produced in 1936, that detailed the terrible over-farming of the Great Plains region of the USA and Canada where there were no rivers, little rain, just constant sun and wind, and a drought that led to the dreadful Dust Bowls which ruined so many settlers' lives. Virgil Thomson composed a music score that is played continuously throughout the film and from it he selected a Suite of six short numbers for concert hall purposes. Leopold Stokowski made the Suite's first recording on 78s in 1946 with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony and re-recorded it in 1961 with the Symphony of the Air. It is that recording that is heard here, accompanied by 'stills' from the film itself. (From 'Vanguard Classics' OVC 8013.)

Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) composed his Three Pictures in 1949 and incorporated his "Wheatfield at Noon" composed in 1948 as the second movement. This is one of the more obscure works of this widely performed and recorded composer. Sorry, taken from a live concert, I have no information on the performers.

The opera, commissioned by the Alice A. Ditson Fund, tells the story of Susan B. Anthony, but Stein's approach mixes real and fictional characters from different historical periods. Premiered at Columbia University, the opera impressed the distinguished audience and press, but neit...

An insightful illumination of author Paul Bowles' original and lesser-known career as an avant-garde composer, Owsley Brown's Night Waltz is an elegant and soulful document of discovery. Interviewed in Morocco during the last months of his life, Bowles journeys back to his early years as a contemporary and occasional collaborator of other such iconic figures as Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson and Orson Welles. Bowles' uncut compositions — performed by the Eos Orchestra — are punctuated with stunning visual essays by filmmakers Nathaniel Dorsky and Rudy Burckhardt. Long after retiring from his more well-known profession, Bowles kept music as a vital part of his life, tapping out fresh rhythms on his Tangier table tops until the end of his days.

A behind-the-scenes look into the first major recording of Scott Wheeler’s piano music, including several musical portraits. Wheeler, best known for his operas, started composing musical portraits while studying under Virgil Thomson. The pieces are performed by pianist Donald Berman. It is hosted by Katie Northlich. Wheeler, Berman, and music producer Adam Abeshouse are interviewed. This documentary also features interviews with some of the portrait subjects: author Megan Marshall, artist Shane Crabtree, director Fern R Lopez, soprano Nancy L. Armstrong, and organist James Woodman. Excerpts from their musical portraits are heard so you can decide for yourself the first question that inevitably comes to mind: Does the portrait sound like it’s subject?
Jack Edward Larson (February 8, 1928 - 20 September 2015) was an American actor, librettist, screenwriter and producer. He is best known for his portrayal of photographer/cub reporter Jimmy Olsen on the TV series Adventures of Superman. Larson was born in Los Angeles of Swedish and Russian descent, and reared in Pasadena. He graduated from Montebello High School in 1945, aged 17, and has at times claimed 1933 as his birth year. Larson found the role of cub reporter Jimmy Olsen on The Adventures of Superman to be a handicap because he became typecast as a naive young man. This caused him to do little acting since the show ended in 1958, and instead focusing on behind-the-scenes work such as writing and production. Larson has always been willing to sit for interviews about the Superman seri...
