The Last HOPE (2008): Dirty New Media: Art, Activism, and Computer Counter Cultures
Friday, July 18, 2008: 9:00 pm (Turing): This talk presents a short history of electronic art by illustrating connections between artists, activists, and hackers. The connections and histories presented include: the demoscene and its origins in software piracy; video and conceptual artists in the 1970s and their activist work; contemporary artists working with circuit bending and other detournements of modern technologies; the Chicago "dirty new media" community; contemporary artists, hackers, and activists creating software and electronic art with a punk/anticapitalist ethos. Excerpts of work from these different artists and communities will be screened and discussed. Hosted by Jake Elliott- published: 30 Oct 2013

Untitled Tripper (New Media Art Film)
Untitled Tripper (New Media Art Film)
This was the second film I made for New Media Art. I spent a lot of time working on this one and I dare you to watch this without blinking! (Or, if you can afford to do so, try watching this while stoned!) Artist Statement: My movie that I have made is entitled "Untitled Tripper". My work is completely random so therefore I couldn't think of a specific name that could sum up what it's about, however I also named it a tripper for its hypnotic and sometimes head cringing graphics and effects. If this were displayed in an art exhibition I would have a widescreen television to project the footage and have viewers sit directly head on to it whilst listening to the music through a set of headphones. I have spent several days working on this and it was only recently that I knew where I wanted to go with what I've had. I used a combination of found images and footage that I have filmed and photographed myself and the soundtrack for my artwork was completely made using Garageband on my Macbook Pro. There were several processes I took to get to where I am now. Originally what I had collected appeared to be random items that I would not see fit with each other. I tried to use iMovie to construct sample shots for my movie but to no prevail; I would eventually try to use Premiere Pro because it had more advanced features that had interesting video effects. That would be my primary software program to edit the tripper film, but I needed to make the song first so I could distinguish the layout for my footage. I spent more time working on the soundtrack than the film itself because Garageband is a really fascinating program; I decided to use the loops that were available to create a unique noise that combined features of soft, heavenly trance-like ambient tunes and rough, heavy and dirty bass tunes. I didn't necessarily choose to equally distribute both types into the song -- I think I was more biased with experimenting with the deep, jagged sounds. Putting the film together was a bit of a pain, but it only took me roughly five hours to complete three quarters of my work. I wanted to put the hypnotizing wheel at the start and end of the movie because my intention would be to entrance the viewer into the sights and sound throughout the five minutes, and also I wanted to make sure that they would maintain their eyesight on the film at all times. From there it was just a random arrangement of the footage I had. The flickering images I used were made with Photoshop and Premiere Pro and I experimented with several colour-mixing effects to create those blinding shades of inversion. In the end, I am really happy with the final outcome. I was glad that I could make something abstract with a broad collection of footage and I have been able to learn a lot about using the software (thanks Google!). I would've decided on making more of my own footage. If I had thought of this idea earlier, but I think my work is fine the way it is. 497 words- published: 20 Nov 2013
