Jim Dine (born June 16, 1935) is an American pop artist. He is sometimes considered to be a part of the Neo-Dada movement.
He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, attended Walnut Hills High School, the University of Cincinnati, and received a BFA from Ohio University in 1957.
He first earned respect in the art world with his Happenings. Pioneered with artists Claes Oldenburg and Allan Kaprow, in conjunction with musician John Cage, the "Happenings" were chaotic performance art that was a stark contrast with the more somber mood of the expressionists popular in the New York art world. The first of these was the 30 second The Smiling Worker performed in 1959.
In 1962 Dine's work was included, along with Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Dowd, Phillip Hefferton, Joe Goode, Edward Ruscha, and Wayne Thiebaud, in the historically important and ground-breaking New Painting of Common Objects, curated by Walter Hopps at the Norton Simon Museum. This exhibition is historically considered one of the first "Pop Art" exhibitions in America. These painters started a movement, in a time of social unrest, which shocked America and the art world. The Pop Art movement fundamentally altered the nature of modern art.
A painter, sculptor, photographer, illustrator, performance artist and poet, Jim Dine is arguably one of the most prolific artists working today. He took TateShots on a tour of his exhibition at Pace Wildenstein, New York, a labyrinthine show that touches on nearly every aspect of his life to date. In this film he talks about his his love of Pinocchio, tools, and why he can do nothing else but make art.

In 2008, artist Jim Dine created an installation for the Museum at the Getty Villa. The first contemporary art project at the Villa, the work presents new sculpture and poetry by Dine inspired by ancient objects in the Museum's collection. Two ancient Greek statuettes of dancing women, are magnified in Dine's four eight-foot-high painted wood female figures. Their arrangement around a seven-foot-high self-portrait head echoes the sculptural group Poet as Orpheus with Two Sirens. The artist's highly personal vision finds further expression in a poem drawn on the walls, with its Orphic themes of travel, loss, and the possibilities of art. Dine describes his creative process in this documentary. Love art? Follow us on Google+ to stay in touch: http://bit.ly/gettygoogleplus Download video (Z...
After a hectic evening of gallery hopping and art viewing James Kalm happens on an opening of new paintings by Pop Art icon Jim Dine. Dine's new works are a distinct departure form his previous imagistic works where he based his compositions of a frontal view of a heart or bathrobe. Along with a plunge in to pure Abstract Expressionism, Dine adds the element of sand to give these pieces the texture of a stucco wall or colored asphalt. Despite the nubby facture, the artist retains a delicate, and rich coloristic sensibility.

Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Leslie Sacks Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of graphic work by renowned artist, Jim Dine. The exhibition will include a range of iconic imagery from 1973-2010 of hearts, robes and Venuses, as well as early works of figures and tools. This presentation exemplifies the Ohio native’s decades-long affinity for the medium of printmaking and further demonstrates his extraordinary abilities as an innovative printmaker. Unlike many artists who produce editions, printmaking is a deliberate media choice for Jim Dine, enabling him tremendous freedom to explore, experiment and push the limits of the conventional wisdom of the process. Dine’s earliest recorded prints were the product of a ‘happening’, which he staged at Reuben Gallery in New York City in 1960....

JIM DINE est peintre et poète. Ses Collected Poems, Poems to Work On viennent de paraître chez Cuneiform Press. « I was born in 1935. The real story is that I didn’t meet poetry till I was 19 when my sculpture professor, Dave Hosteller, at Ohio University, played Dylan Thomas reading his poems on a Caedmon “LP” record. He also gave me Under Milk Wood (Thomas’s radio play) to listen to. During my early 20s, I made performances in New York with colleagues in the “downtown” art world. My most elaborate work, called Car Crash, was a cacophony of sounds and words spoken by a great white Venus with animal grunts and howls by me. Five years later, I illustrated Ron Padgett’s translation of Apollinaire’s The Poet Assassinated. Meeting Ron introduced me to his work and the works of other poets he a...
