James Ensor at MoMA
James Kalm anxiously pursues this enlightening exhibition by one of the most unique masters in the Modernist canon. Although he stayed near home, and rarely sought out the avant-garde, James Ensor became the Godfather of Northern Expressionism. His unique subject matter, brilliant draftsmanship, and sensitive yet urgent use of materials and color distinguish him as an inspiration of much 20th century art. Organized by Anna Swinbourne, Assistant Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture.

James Ensor - personal photographs
CLICK TO WATCH FULL DOCUMENTARY ONLINE: docsonline.tv A face hidden behind a mask, a slightly ominous still life, the colorful Ostend rooftops, they all represent the masterpieces of Belgian artist James Ensor. During his painting career this reformer of Belgian modern art developed a personal style, evolving from realism to expressionism and surrealism. This film by director Paul Haesaerts is a striking portrait of the artist, using Ensors own texts to strengthen the images of his paintings.

They Might Be Giants - Meet James Ensor
"In my art history class, while in college, we were bored and all of a sudden [Ensor's] works came up and we were surprised at how exciting it was. He was an expressionist, like other 20th century expressionist painters, who was ahead of his time and was very eccentric. The line "Dig him up and shake his hand" is actually very specific - a parallel idea to a lot of his paintings which involve resurrections, skeletons and puppets being animated. It's not an accident that the language of the song reflects his work. He did a painting - titled something like "Self Portrait in 1970". It's a skeleton, wearing his clothes. He became a phenomenon right before the turn of the century. With the song, I'm trying to encapsulate the issues of his life - an eccentric guy who became celebrated and was soon left behind as his ideas were taken into the culture and other people became expressionists." - John Flansburgh

Projection on the Bridge - Immersive Surfaces - As Above, So Below
www.light-harvest.com
We set out to create a one of a kind public art experience, a projection mapping installation for multiple surfaces and multiple dimensions. With a hand picked team of artists and sponsorship by Senovva, something incredible emerged.
Unfolding like an animated modern Botticelli painting, flowing above our heads and spreading outwards
in every direction, “As Above, So Below” immersed viewers in the architecture of the Manhattan Bridge. Audiences physically entered the story and explored the shimmering surface as it ignited with messages and symbols.
This originally conceived video mapping project was a challenge offered to a group of artists from varying backgrounds. Led by digital arts pioneers Farkas Fulop and Ryan Uzilevsky, with post production support by Sina Taherkhani, the group created a one-of-a-kind experience. Adding to the fun were Artists Simon Anaya, John Parker, Richard Jochum and Johnny Moreno. The final projection utilized over 25,000 square feet of architectural canvas, and ultimately won "Best In Show" at the Dumbo Arts Festival.
This production tested every technique in image-making conceivable in the short time frame, including stop motion animation, and the suspension of over twenty performance artists from fly wires at sixteen feet off the ground.
Leo Kuelb is responsible for securing the site and bringing the original team together. He also put together a great international video art showcase between screenings of "As Above, So Below."

Meet James Ensor by TMBG in Mario Paint ummm.... Sequencer
This is a test video I made a while back to see how well I can make music in Mario Paint Sequencer, which is almost exactly like the original Mario Paint. Please excuse the pauses, MPS doesn't have a fancy arranger/looper option (or whatever the new MPC has).

Meet James Ensor
FOR DROO :D In case you didn't watch my little vlog before this: I'm redoing this song for Droo because my original cover of this is how he found my channel and started talking to me... and he's the one who bought me this fancy new HD webcam, so I wanted to thank him in a (very) small way. As for the sound quality, I think I may have accidentally forgot to switch the microphone settings to this webcam... I still have the other one plugged in because it's difficult to get to the back of my computer. The ASKFHLDSKHG sound in the beginning, though... I've had that problem with every microphone or camera I've tried to use. I need to remember to give the uke a few strums once I hit record but before I start actually playing to warm up the microphone... I've done that in the past and it's worked pretty well.
