Real Democracy? HUGE FIGHT in Ukraine Parliament over Language Law. Would you want this in UK/U.S? Fights between members of Ukraine's opposition and the police broke out in Kiev, as several hundred people protested against a bill on minority languages. Tear gas was used, although it's not clear by which side, and several people were injured. Only 72 hours ago, Kiev was the venue for a truly remarkable battle -- the Euro 2012 football championships' final match between Spain and Italy. On Wednesday, a spot in the Ukrainian capital -- literally meters from where the fans had partied for three weeks in a special fanzone -- turned into a battlefield of a different kind -- scuffles with the police, sitting hunger strikes, tear gas and speeding ambulances. People who now call themselves "protectors of the state language" surrounded the so-called Ukrainian House -- formerly a museum of Lenin, now an exhibition center displaying feats of Ukraine's culture. Their decision to picket this particular spot was not only driven by symbolism -- but it was due to become the venue for President Yanukovich's annual press conference, which was later cancelled. That's why when a decision to remove the crowd from the entrance was made, a large-scale brawl broke out between activists and riot police. It is still unclear who sprayed tear gas in the crowd -- the police or the right-wing radicals, but several people received facial and lung injuries and had to receive medical help. Among them was one of Ukraine's sports icons -- heavyweight boxing champion Vitaliy Klitschko, who is now pursuing a political career and stands a good chance of winning some seats in the future parliament. Several deputies of Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc and the Our Ukraine party said they would go on a hunger strike until the bill is curtailed. Vitali Klitschko (C), heavyweight boxing champion and leader of Ukrainian political party UDAR, hides his face while walking away after police fired teargas during a rally held to protest against a Russian language bill passed by parliament in Kiev July 4, 2012. (Reuters/Stringer) Vitali Klitschko (C), heavyweight boxing champion and leader of Ukrainian political party UDAR, hides his face while walking away after police fired teargas during a rally held to protest against a Russian language bill passed by parliament in Kiev July 4, 2012. (Reuters/Stringer) Kiev is no stranger to protests -- political life in the country has been like a rollercoaster ride ever since early 2000s. In fact, even the Euro 2012 fanzone was neighboring the ever-present tent camp of the opposition, which for almost a year now has been protesting against former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko's imprisonment. But this time the opposition deputies -- and those activists sharing their beliefs -- made it clear that to them it was a matter of national, cultural and ethnic integrity. The core of the problem has been the controversial "languages bill", which by its design is meant to grant broad regional rights to several languages, spoken by ethnic minorities across Ukraine. The list includes Russian, Hungarian, Romanian, Tatar and several other languages. If this bill is ever to become law, this would mean that ethnic minorities in Ukraine would be able to study their mother tongue languages in schools, watch movies dubbed into their language, and use the languages for documentation in regional bodies of authority. It was eventually proposed by the ruling party's deputies Kolesnichenko and Kivalov, but in fact it has been more than a decade in the making. (Reuters/Anatolii Stepanov) Only in 2012 did the bill become a reality, but it has caused outrage among some parts of Ukrainian society. Despite that it never said the country may have several state languages -- with Ukrainian remaining the only official state language -- and despite it being based on the European charter of minority languages -- one of the conditions under which a country could become an EU member (something so strongly desired by both the ruling party and the opposition) -- deputies from several political forces within parliament turned it into a matter of life and death for the Ukrainian language and culture as a whole. tags: news 2012 report fight parliament language law feelings scandal attack debate speech vote voting politics thug restrain event threat family punch rage agreement moscow russia chaos democracy soviet brawl weak conclusion guide ukraine injure riots tv live channel calm trend trends trendy liberty freedom rights europe country unseen forces 829speedy- published: 17 Jan 2014

Beginning on 27 February 2014, unidentified pro-Russian troops seized control of the majority of the Crimean peninsula in the southeastern area of Ukraine. The region has fallen into a crisis as a result of the uncertain outcome of the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, and Russia's apparent seizure of this strategic peninsula. The Ukrainian response so far has been muted as its leaders seek diplomatic solutions,[citation needed] with military reaction on their part limited to a mobilization of Ukraine's armed forces and reserves. At the international level, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Canada, Turkey and the European Union condemned Russia, accusing it of breaking international law and violating Ukrainian sovereignty. We thought that you would like to understand the words that Ukrainians sing in a million voices nearly every hour for almost four months in a row. The words that keep us strong and united in our fight for the better future. Lyrics: Glorious spirit of Ukraine shines and lives forever. Blessed by Fortune brotherhood will stand up together. Like the dew before the sun enemies will fade, We will further rule and prosper in our promised land. We will lay our soul and body for the cherished freedom. Cossack blood will raise the nation of the joyous people. For the liberty the folk strives ardently from San to Don, And will let no alien power in our common home. Aged Dnieper and Black Sea arm in arm rejoice, And Ukraine will see daylight and live by Fortune's choice. We will lay our soul and body for the cherished freedom. Cossack blood will raise the nation of the joyous people. Passion and hard-working hands prove bright future true. Song of freedom, loud and clear, guides us all way through. Over mountains and steppes it flows, over ages told. Valorous Ukraine stands strong in a thriving world. We will lay our soul and body for the cherished freedom. Cossack blood will raise the nation of the joyous people. Stay strong and pray for Ukraine!- published: 16 Mar 2014

But by the time of the evacuation order, Russia's military had already started booting Ukrainian troops from their bases or getting them to switch sides. The deputies were fighting over a bill drafted by Ukraine's ruling party, which aims to make Russian an official language - equal to Ukrainian - in many parts of the country. Ukraine has a population of 43 million, with 27 regions in total - the law is proposed for the 13 regions where there are sizeable numbers of Russian-speaking citizens. The violent scuffles broke out between deputies from President Viktor Yanukovich's ruling Regions party, and lawmakers from pro-Western opposition parties, who want to preserve Ukraine's cultural and political independence from its powerful neighbor Russia. Speaker Vladimir Litvin said he was ashamed by the spectacle, which was caught on video that immediately went viral across the world. [Vladimir Litvin, Ukrainian Upper Rada Speaker]: "We need to harness the courage and buffoonery (shown in the brawl) and go to the people, because everyone says 'they are acting on behalf of the people' so we need to go to the people and tell the truth, and they will support or not support (us). We cannot keep torturing the country. The whole world is laughing at us." The draft bill proposes using Russian as an official language equal to Ukrainian in some civic institutions such as schools, hospitals and courts, in the regions where a Russian-speaking population is in the majority. Opposition deputies consider the law an attempt by Yanukovich's party to divide Ukrainians ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections in October, as well as being a threat to the existence of Ukrainian language. Ukraine's Russian speaking population are concentrated in the east of the country, as well as in the Crimea to the south; in particular the eastern industrial regions form the power base for many deputies of the ruling Regions party. Outside the parliament building on Friday, protesters gathered, waving Ukraininan flags, drumming and holding signs that said "Keep you paws off my language". Protester Yarina Chernoguzov said the proposed law was taking a step back towards Soviet times: [Yarina Chernoguzov, Member of Citizen Protest Movement]: "For the first time in 21 years of independence, this kind of dangerous bill is in on the agenda in the upper Rada, and they are getting ready to vote for it. Already for the second day we are ready to do something so that this doesn't happen and it's completely cancelled." One opposition deputy was taken to hospital with his shirt covered in blood following Thursday's brawl.- published: 26 May 2012

Ukraine to outlaw Russian language
Ukraine to outlaw Russian language
The political crisis in Ukraine inevitably spreads to the status of the Russian language in the country. The majority of the country speaks the great and mighty Russian language, which is still considered a foreign language. The Verkhovna Rada decided to overturn the law on the status of the Russian language, which was adopted in the summer of 2012. The law allowed additional regional languages, if 10 percent of local residents considered them native. The leader of Fatherland Party, Arseny Yatsenyuk, said that under the constitution, it is the Ukrainian language that can be considered the only state language in the country. No one threatens Russian-speaking citizens, their rights are protected by law, he said, although it is not yet clear yet, which law it is exactly. Freedom Party said that they would prepare a bill, claiming that the previous one contained gross violations. Radicals from the nationalist organization The Right Sector, issued a statement, according to which the country should launch the course for total Ukrainisation. It just so happens that it will be even harder for the West and East of Ukraine to find a common language.- published: 24 Feb 2014
