My Time with the Peanut Queen of Alabama
My Time with the Peanut Queen of Alabama
As a little way to clean my palate between trips, I enjoyed a short lecture tour around the USA this last week—giving talks in the Midwest (Sioux Falls, Fargo, and Des Moines), New York (Albany and Rochester), and Alabama (Auburn). At these locations I found myself talking to (and with) librarians at their regional convention; TV and radio station staff and their supporters; venerable women's club members at their lecture series; and professors, administrators, and foreign-study program staff at universities. I met people both proud of their cities and curious about the world. While I was hired to share what I've learned through my travels, I enjoyed learning from the people who hired me to teach. In Alabama I explained how the anti-USA graffiti travelers encounter is not really anti-USA or anti-USA ideals, rather, it's anti-aggressive US trade policies. For instance, in struggling countries throughout the developing world, hardline First World trade tariffs allow poor countries to export raw materials but often not finished goods. In other words, if you grow peanuts, you can sell raw peanuts but not peanut butter. Discussing this over dinner, my host told me back when America was living under British rule, farmers in the South dealt with the same kind of structural poverty. They could produce cotton but not refine it into textiles. Being forced to sell the raw material to England so the English could make the serious money stoked local anger—and likely anti-English graffiti. Crossing from Georgia into Alabama, I noticed huge fireworks emporia along the freeways. I said that where I live, fireworks are only sold in the weeks leading up to the 4th of July. My host explained that in Alabama fireworks are on sale all year long. "Rednecks like to blow things up all the time. Why wait for the 4th of July?" he said. The fireworks draw lots of people from neighboring states too. Alabamians have a particular kind of pride. When I asked about the freeway exit to "Phenix City," they said that's just how they spell "Phoenix." They added, the next time I come, I must spend some time on the Gulf Coast, which they called "the Redneck Riviera." And driving back into Georgia they had a good laugh at how, at the border, the sign still reads, "Welcome to Georgia, Home of the 1996 Olympics." I enjoyed a wonderful day at Auburn University, and before my lecture I was given a "golf-cart tour" of the campus by two wonderful young people whose responsibility is to show prospective students around. Here's a little video clip which splices in a particular Alabama love of peanuts. Subscribe at http://goo.gl/8iBEnS for regular blog updates from Europe.- published: 14 Oct 2013

Traditional American Song - Oh Susanna
Traditional American Song - Oh Susanna
Oh, I come from Alabama, with my banjo on my knee. I'm goin' to Louisiana My true love for to see. Oh! Susanna, now don't you cry for me. For I come from Alabama, with my banjo on my knee. It rained all night the day I left; The weather was so dry. The sun so hot I froze to death. Susanna don't you cry. Oh! Susanna, now don't you cry for me. For I come from Alabama, with my banjo on my knee. I had a dream the other night When everything was still; I thought I saw Susanna, A-comin' down the hill. Oh! Susanna, now don't you cry for me. For I come from Alabama, with my banjo on my knee. A buckwheat cake was in her mouth; A tear was in her eye. I said, "I come from Dixie Land; Susanna, don't you cry!" Oh! Susanna, now don't you cry for me. For I come from Alabama, with my banjo on my knee. In 1846, Stephen Foster moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and became a bookkeeper with his brother's steamship company. While in Cincinnati, Foster wrote "Oh! Susanna", possibly for his men's social club.[1][2] The song was first performed by a local quintet at a concert in Andrews' Eagle Ice Cream Saloon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1847.[3] It was first published by W. C. Peters & Co. in Cincinnati in 1848.[4] Other minstrel troupes performed the work, and, as was common at the time, many registered the song for copyright under their own names. As a result, it was copyrighted and published at least 21 times[5] from February 25, 1848, through February 14, 1851.[2 Thanks to http://americanenglish.state.gov/resources/sing-out-loud-traditional-songs- published: 22 Nov 2013

Observations on Latex Body Paint with Model Tess Irah
This is not a how-to video, but just some observations on the process of body painting for nude photography.
Transcript of audio at titles:
Warning: Some people are allergic to latex. Make sure your model is not.
Body paint available from Liquid Latex World
The design was applied with a 2" foam brush.
Drying time was about 10 minutes.
Tess: "It feels strange when it dries on your skin. You can feel it tighten up."
Heat, air flow, and low humidity will reduce drying time.
Until fully dry, the paint will stick to itself.
Tess: "You should get just a close up of [that]."
Tess: "We tried latex paint and it's pretty exciting and sticky. its a pain to get off but not that painful. its fun. The body hair, i have more right here [on my arm], it's more sensitive. My legs I'm not having any problem with, because they have no hair on them."
Hair removal 2-3 days prior to painting is advised.
Clean-up time was about 20 minutes.
Some bits of paint did not come off right away. Latex remover is also available.
When you're using it, you have to be careful not to press your skin together because it will pull off. Its messy but fun. It feels very weird. It feels like pulling a piece of tire off your skin.

DRUMS
All sounds from original footage. Took a long time to edit! Thanks to my nieces for being good sports, and my sister, brother-in-law and Mum and Dad for putting up with the noise. If you enjoy this video you'll probably enjoy this one too! https://vimeo.com/59976840
UPDATE:
Thanks everyone for sharing and for your lovely comments! My nieces are going to be very excited. I know I am!
Many people over the net are mentioning Lasse Gjertsen's video 'Amateur' so I just wanted to give a hat tip to that. I don't think I'd seen it before making this, or if I had I'd forgotten! I just got excited when I found out my niece had gotten a drum kit and I wanted to make it look like she was instantly incredible - playing really fast drum and bass beats. This was the only method I could think of. But hey, all credit due to Lasse for doing it first. The guy's clearly a massive champion!
Anyways, thanks again for all the kindness. Come and hang out with me on Facebook if you like: https://www.facebook.com/simonpanrucker Also I don't know what to do with my Twitter account, but it's there if you want it: http://www.twitter.com/spanrucker

Portrait of the ghost drummer
Ghost Drummer is a multidisciplinary project that explores graphic qualities in process of playing on a drum kit. Besides being a musician, drummer when playing is unconsciously engaged in an elaborate choreography. The drum sticks are the extensions of drummer's hands like a brush is an extension of the painter's hand. Motion-captured movements become a visual map over a time revealing fragile rhythm structures and invisible notations behind energetic instrumental solo. 'Portrait of a Ghost Drummer' expands the understanding of drummers activity from purely auditory experience to spontaneous visual performance. From technical point of view motion trajectory was captured on Vicon MX system and raw CSV files were translated into visual language in 3d environment Cinema4D. My self-developed technique is inspired by areas such as drumming notation, action painting, choreography, japanese calligraphy and 3d digital drawing. Most important for me is that it gives me true feeling that I am my drawing.
"When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fear of making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well."
-- Jackson Pollock, My Painting, 1956 (source: wikipedia)
I worked on this animation during my recent artistic residency at Culture Lab in Newcastle. I would like to thank Atau Tanaka, Pussykrew, David Green & all Culture Lab team.
