"Men hunt, women weave." In the Taiwanese aboriginal tribe, Seediq, it is customary to judge a woman’s social status according to her weaving skills and originality. Women inherited this value form their mothers, grandmothers, and all the ancestors live before them. They weave for their sons’ ceremonial outfits, for their daughters’ dowries, and for all the people they love. The process consists of planting ramie, extracting fibers, making linen thread, and weave. Wavers weave before the crack of dawn and after the family enter their dreamland, because those are the only two period of time when they can discharge themselves from daily tasks. It takes months of meticulous work to turn their one piece of appreciation into a piece of cloth through their loving hands. But what happen when the value they believe so much no longer means anything to the next generation? This heritage and value had been passing on generation after generation through mother-daughter coaching until modern days, until the time-consuming process was seen as nothingness. In 2009, Taiwanese aboriginal artist Labay Neyong and I started our research inside Seediq tribe in Wanrong town and interviewed eight weavers, whose average age is eighty five years old. The aim of our research is to share weavers’ lives with the outside world and to document this traditional value system before it vanishes completely. We documented their fabulous weaving technique and observed the tribal trading history through their weaving material in different decades. But sadly, we also listened to them expressing how those cloth mean nothing to their children, and which makes them doubt themselves as who they are. And when we returned in 2010, some of the weavers had already given up weaving because of their poor health condition. I thank all the weavers whom embrace us into their lives and share their stories with us. They are Bangay Mowna, Heyji Pisaw, Idu Danabima, Labi Ubus, Laknui Mango, Ribih Bedamq, Tami Wadis and Uli Danabima.

Voices in the Clouds (trailer)
"Voices in Clouds" is the story of an Asian-American man who journeys back to Taiwan in search of his late mother's spirit and a connection with his indigenous heritage. Through his eyes, the audience will become intimately familiar with a largely unknown Taiwanese tribal culture--among them the last surviving tattooed elders of the Atayal and Truku tribes... some of which are over 100 years old.
'Voices' celebrates the importance of family, understanding one's heritage, and of cultural preservation... and it hopes to inspire the audience to carve their own path toward self-discovery.

Return to Taiwan
This is a departure for me of sorts, as I usually cover international music. The trip to Taiwan promised a great deal of culture and concerts, but Hurricane Soulik blew that second element away. Still, there is so much that is fascinating about Taiwan's culture that I knew I would come back with something of interest, so I just kept my camcorder rolling, and here is the result, and some written comments about it.
One of the things that of course, makes Taiwan unique is that as my colleague Lucia points out in the video, it is over 90% Han Chinese. Yet even the hordes of tourists who come over from the Mainland these days will tell you that Taiwanese are somehow different. Yes, much of the culture is directly traceable to the mainland, but one must factor in the influence of the European powers who traded (and exploited) this island for hundreds of years, the 50 years of extremely influential Japanese occupation, and the history of a nationalist military dictatorship, which morphed fairly smoothly into democracy. Then a generation of hard work also created a highly successful capitalism that is peculiarly Taiwanese. And let us not forget that it is an island, and islands tend to create particular cultures in and of themselves. There are aboriginal tribes, and also a significant population of Hakka Chinese that arrived hundreds of years ago, to farm the lush, mountainous south, to be factored into the mix.
I start my video with Taipei 101, which is a kind of symbol for the hard-won business success of Taiwan (it is currently a hub of the tech industry). Its Green elements and its pagoda-like design, also point to a sensitivity towards nature and Asian art, respectively. And a word about the puppet theater… I mention that glove puppetry has been voted the most representative art form of Taiwanese culture, but the performance I show here is very traditional. Today, there are complete televised soap operas acted out with puppets, and even teenagers have their favorite characters, and get all caught up with the stories. These characters have modern dress, and modern concerns. So while what I caught and present here is wonderful, it is only part of the story.
I'm sure I don't need to tell anyone about why food is a cultural marker. (I am a confessed foodie.) Legend has it that When Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan, he brought all the best cooks with him. This may or may not be true, but what is certainly true is that a very specific and sophisticated Taiwanese cuisine has developed based on the ingredients so readily found here, with an emphasis on tropical fruits, fish, poultry and seafood. The textures are delicate, the flavorings subtle, with little in the way of spicy heat. Of course the fare at the Night Market was far brasher, and the experience of wandering around in this high energy place, filled with one fascinating offering after another was totally exciting, and sheer fun.
I closed my video with an off-the -cuff interview with two delightful young people who were selling pineapple cakes at Taipei 101. They seemed quite perfect.
NOTE: I have since learned that the mystery food in the Night Market, the small vegetable wrapped in green leaves is called a "betel nut." The vendor stuffs the fruit with special herbal ingredients and wraps it up with a betel nut leaf. It has a stimulant effect, so people who need to stay awake use it. Priestley, our colleague from the Solomon Islands mentioned that in his homeland, it is commonly used as well. He noticed that our bus driver used it too, instead of coffee. Priestley thought perhaps it was another link between Taiwan's aboriginal population and the Solomon Islands.
If you like the music that you heard in this "travelogue" you can see a rehearsal and interview with the band Sizhukong here:
http://inter-muse.com/taiwan-journey-part-3-some-jazz-from-sizhukong/
It is part of a six part musical journey I documented years ago using at the time, a Flip camera, also on my site at Inter-muse.com.

Taiwan Journey Part One: Nanguan Music with Wu Hsin-fei
JANUARY 11, 2010, 12:00 PM
(To see more of Michal's world music videos, visit http://inter-muse.com)
I recently returned from a trip to Taiwan, where I checked out the local music scene. Taiwan has a very layered cultural history; when I was growing up the country was called Formosa, a name given to it hundreds of years ago by Portuguese sailors. Taiwan was colonized by the Japanese, who left a profound mark, and most obviously, there is a huge Han Chinese population there that migrated in two major waves, one early, beginning in the 1600s, and another later during the 1940s and 50s under Chiang Kai-shek. There is also an aboriginal population, and although they have been marginalized like many of the aboriginals of the world, their music is increasingly being sold and enjoyed.
For my first installment, I'm going for the throat -- with an à cappella performance by a Nanguan singer. (Usually this music is performed with an ensemble of string, wind and percussion.) I had been told that there was a very adventurous Nanguan singer named Wu Hsin-fei who was doing all kinds of collaborations with western and aboriginal musicians. When I set up my appointment to videotape her, she requested that it be in the studio of a master ceramist, so we drove up into the mountains (Taipei is surrounded on three sides by mountains, the fourth side being a harbor) and I found myself in another world. I hope you will see and hear what I mean. So much of how we perceive music is learned, so you may need to "reset your brain" when you listen to this. But I also think that her performance is so riveting, and I was able to get so close up, that you will be drawn into this very special experience. Personally, I find that it calms me immensely.
One of the artists I interviewed said that Taiwanese (or in this case, Chinese in Taiwan) music is about time and space. I tend to agree with that, and will go one step further: it has been so refined over the hundreds (sometimes thousands) of years, that it has retained only the most abstract essence of music. For me, it was akin to listening to a Western minimalist piece. And all you singers out there -- check out her tone production!
Here is some background information about the artist:
"Ms. Wu Hsin-fei has had formal training in Nanguan music and has performed with traditional Nanguan ensembles. Over the past few years however, she has started to sing some of the most famous ballads of the repertoire à cappella. More recently, for her new CD, she has chosen to sing Tang dynasty poetry - till now not part of the Nanguan repertoire, together with solo instruments such as pi'pa, flute, guqin and Arabic oud."
