At Least 13 People Killed After Clashes In Yemen
At least 13 people died when Shia Muslim fighters clashed with security forces in northern Yemen, local authorities said. Two soldiers were killed and four others were wounded when the fighters attacked a security checkpoint on Friday, in the northwestern al-Jawf province, according to state news agency Saba. The fighters were from the Houthi movement, which is seeking to strengthen its hold on the north. An exchange of fire took place as a result of the attack and three of the Houthi attackers were killed and several others were arrested, a statement by the local authorities said. The security situation in Yemen is closely watched in Gulf Arab states and the United States, given the impoverished country's strategic position next to top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and to main shipping lanes. Varying accounts of attack Security sources told Reuters news agency that violence erupted after members of the Houthi group staged a protest in al Hazm, the provincial capital of al Jawf province, against what they said was the government's failure to boost the economy and end violence. Officials from both sides have given different accounts of what happened next. One government security source, who asked not to be named, said armed Houthis exchanged fire with soldiers at an army checkpoint near a local government compound, leaving at least 10 Houthis and three soldiers dead, while another said some of the soldiers may have been supporters of one of the Houthis' long-standing foes, the Sunni Islah party. The Houthis said they were attacked by armed Islah members supported by a group from the army, according to a statement on a Houthi-linked website, but Islah member Mohammed Qahtan said the group had no armed wing and played no part in Friday's fighting. Yemen's interim President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has been struggling to restore order and meet the demands of the country's rival groups since his predecessor, veteran strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh, was forced out of office in 2012. On Wednesday, the UN Security Council authorised sanctions against anyone in Yemen who obstructs the country's political transition or commits human rights violations but stopped short of blacklisting any specific individuals.- published: 01 Mar 2014

Sectarian Clashes Come Closer To Yemeni Capital
Sectarian Clashes Come Closer To Yemeni Capital
At least 40 people have been killed in three days of fighting between Shia Muslim rebels and Sunni tribesmen, as sectarian fighting draws closer to the capital Sanaa. Fighting in al-Jawf province, 140km northeast of Sanaa, claimed more than 30 lives on Friday and Saturday before government mediators managed to broker a truce. Fighting was still raging on Sunday in Hamdan, an area 30km northwest of Sanaa, with more than 10 people killed, officials on both sides said. A local official called on government mediators to try to stop the fighting and warned in a statement carried by Yemeni media that failure to do so would result in a "bloodbath". The Houthis, who control much of the northern Saada province bordering Saudi Arabia also blew up a three-storey Sunni religious education centre in Hamdan on Sunday, local tribal sources said. Houthi fighters arrived in Hamdan from northern Yemen to safeguard access from their northern stronghold of Saada to Sanaa, where they have large following, tribal sources said. Fighters loyal to the tribe, who have repeatedly fought government forces since 2004, are trying to tighten their grip on the north but have denied wanting to enter the capital Sanaa. Fighting in the north erupted last year when the Houthis accused Sunni Salafis at the town of Dammaj of recruiting foreign fighters to prepare an attack. A government ceasefire was brokered between the warring factions before the Salafis finally agreed to leave the town. Gulf Arab states and the United States have been particularly concerned about violence in the country as it shares a long border with oil exporter Saudi Arabia and its coast runs alongside Red Sea and Gulf of Aden shipping lanes. Fractured federation The plan to transform Yemen into a six-region federation has been rejected by Houthis as they feel its splits the country into rich and poor regions. The decentralisation plan has also drawn opposition from southerners who want a federal state made up of two provinces based on the former South Yemen. On Sunday, Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi ordered a panel to draw up the constitution for Yemen's new federation. The 17-member panel, which includes four women, is expected to implement a decentralisation plan agreed at a national conference last year to create four regions in north Yemen and two in the south.- published: 09 Mar 2014

4 Al-Qaeda Suspects Killed In Yemen By Drone
A US drone strike in northern Yemen has killed four suspected al-Qaeda members including a local chief who fought in Iraq, a Yemen military official has told the AFP news agency. The unmanned aircraft fired two rockets at a vehicle in the Khalka area of Jawf province on Wednesday, a military official said, killing a man named Ali Juraym, cited as an al-Qaeda veteran of Iraq. The US military has killed dozens of fighters over the past year with drone strikes in Yemen. Their use has triggered criticism from rights activists, who say they have killed many unarmed civilians. The UN said 16 civilians were killed and at least 10 wounded when two wedding processions were targeted by drones in early December. The victims had been mistakenly identified as members of al-Qaeda, the UN quoted local security officials as saying at the time. Following the deaths, Yemen's parliament voted for a ban on drone strikes, but analysts say politicians have limited powers and are unlikely to have an impact on Washington's campaign. The US says drones are an essential part of its "war on terror".- published: 05 Mar 2014
