Gari Melchers American Painter Cosi fan tutte, K. 588: Overture BEETHOVEN
Julius Garibaldi Melchers (August 11, 1860 - November 30, 1932) was an American artist. He was one of the leading American proponents of naturalism. He won a 1932 Gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The son of German-born American sculptor Julius Theodore Melchers, Gari Melchers was a native of Detroit, Michigan, who at seventeen studied art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under von Gebhardt and is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. After three years went to Paris, where he worked at the Académie Julian, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, where he studied under Lefebvre and Boulanger. Attracted by the pictorial side of Holland, he settled at Egmond. In 1882, Melchers presented The Letter, painted the previous year in Brittany, at the Paris Salon; this first presentation by a young artist was well received. In 1884, he founded an art colony at Egmond-aan-Zee in Holland with American artist George Hitchcock. His first important Dutch picture, The Sermon, brought him favorable attention at the Paris Salon of 1886. He became a member of the National Academy of Design, New York; the Royal Academy of Berlin; Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris; International Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, London, and the Secession Society, Munich; and, besides receiving a number of medals, his decorations include the Legion of Honor, France; the order of the Red Eagle, Germany; and knight of the Order of St Michael, Bavaria. In 1889, he and John Singer Sargent became the first American painters to win a Grand Prize at the Paris Universal Exposition. His paintings from the World Columbian Exposition (1893) held in Chicago are now in the Library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. n 1904 he was named an Officer in the French Legion of Honor. In 1909 he was appointed Professor of Art at the Grand Ducal Saxony School of Art in Weimar, Germany. In 1915 he returned to New York City to open a studio at Abraham Archibald Anderson's Bryant Park Studios building. From 1920 to 1928 he served as the president of the New Society of Artists. He was a member of the Virginia Fine Arts Commission and a trustee of the Corcoran Gallery of Art. He served as chairman of the Art Committee of the National Gallery of Art.- published: 24 Dec 2013

The Skriker @ AIM
The Skriker @ AIM
A small highlights package from our recent production The Skriker. THE SKRIKER is the story of a shape-shifting fairy who pursues two teenage girls, Lily and Josie. This ancient trickster brings havoc to humans who are blind to planet's suffering. Blending naturalism, horror, physical theatre and magic, this is a story of love, loss and revenge, performed by theatre students in the Bachelor of Performance degree. A unique degree with specialised training for the actor / creator / producer. AIM's Dramatic Arts Course provides students with the unique opportunity to train professionally as actors and gain fundamental theatre-making skills in the areas of directing, design and technical production. This specialised training program is facilitated by high-calibre teaching staff and a strong track record of graduate employment. Incorporating elements of an acting course, this degree extends the mainstream acting school approach to education with diverse, unique professional training both as an individual and an ensemble member. Students learn the multiple skills required for an independent career in the performing arts. Based in Sydney, this theatre course provides professional training by nurturing the talent, technique & temperament of the performer, creator, actor & producer both as individuals & ensemble members. Much more than an acting school, students learn to embrace the multiple skills required for an independent career in the performing arts. Major Studies Performance Skills Acting engages the senses, intellect, body and voice with a collaborative process of linear work on text and a personal connection with imagined circumstances. Improvisation unleashes instinct, focuses energy, develops spontaneity, and encourages invention. Voice offers ongoing technique for a free and flexible speaking instrument. Movement focuses on alignment, observation and adjustment, and includes combat, clowning and Asian theatre. Performance Practice Public and in-house performances are scheduled each trimester. The Discovery Play and Devised Work are early explorations of a full-length script and a new piece of physical theatre. The Contemporary Text is the first season of public performances, followed by the challenge of a Classic Text. Final year students develop New Short Works and take roles onstage and off in the Graduating Company Production. Repertoire Performance knowledge and acting skill are applied in a weekly Master Class. Explore ancient Storytelling, scenes from Australian Plays, landmarks of British and American Drama, translations from European and Asian Theatre, and Classics from across the world stage. Each student rehearses and presents scenes twice per trimester, and all second year students are assigned to direct a scene. Contextual Studies A lecture series offering current research tools for theatre, film, and contemporary performance. Discover how writers for stage and screen shape a story; explore the cultural diversity of storytelling; examine the roles of the writer, adaptor and translator; consider how performance research informs acting for stage and screen; and access trade secrets and networking opportunities in weekly sessions with industry guests. Associated Studies These practical classes support the creative actor. First year students take Lighting and Sound, Production and Stage Management, and work on a Production Crew. Second year students study Directing and Design, and develop New Works in creative teams. Acting for Camera adapts students to the demands of screen acting. Dance and Singing units complement weekly classes in Voice and Movement. All students take units in Marketing and Finance.- published: 23 Oct 2013
