Nimitz Class, with a full load displacement of 97,000 tons, is the world's largest aircraft carrier. The first carrier in the class was deployed in May 1975, while the tenth and last ship, USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), was commissioned in January 2009. Each carrier of the Nimitz Class is designed to operate for about 50 years, requiring just one mid-life overhaul. The 332.8m-long super carrier features a 4.5-acre flight deck capable of carrying more than 60 aircraft. Each ship towers 20 stories above the water and can accommodate 3,000 to 3,200 ship's company, 1,500 air wing and 500 other crew. Nimitz Class is powered by two nuclear reactors providing a maximum speed of more than 30kt. The Sea Sparrow missiles, Phalanx close-in weapon system (CIWS) and Rolling Airframe Missiles (RAMs) mounted aboard the vessel defend against potential threats. The ships in Nimitz Class will be replaced by the Gerald R. Ford Class (CVN 78) next generation aircraft carriers from 2015.

The US also has another 10 light carriers known as amphibious assault ships used primarily for helicopters; these can also carry up to 20-25 fighter jets and in some cases are as large as some other nations' fixed-wing carriers. After two decades of double-digit increases in the military budget, China's admirals plan to develop a full blue-water navy capable of defending growing economic interests as well as disputed territory in the South and East China Seas. The country's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning - a Soviet-era ship bought from Ukraine in 1998 and re-fitted in a Chinese shipyard - has long been a symbol of China's naval build-up. Successfully operating the 60,000-tonne Liaoning is the first step in what state media and some military experts believe will be the deployment of locally built carriers by 2020. In comments carried on Chinese news websites, Wang Min, the Communist Party boss of the northeastern province of Liaoning, where the first carrier is based, said the second carrier was being built in the port city of Dalian. Its construction would take about six years, and in future China would have a fleet of at least four carriers, Wang told members of the province's legislature on Saturday, the reports added. Dalian is the port where the existing carrier was re-fitted for use by the Chinese navy. Some of the reports about the new carrier were apparently latter removed from the Internet, as links to the stories did not work. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, citing unnamed military sources, said the reports may have been removed either because the government wanted the construction to be low profile or because Wang did not have the authority for such an announcement. The Defence Ministry did not respond to a request for comment. The Liaoning successfully executed more than 100 tests, including those of its combat systems, during drills in the disputed South China Sea last month. The exercises off the coast of Hainan Island marked not only the first time China had sent a carrier into the South China Sea but the first time it had manoeuvred with the kind of strike group of escort ships U.S. carriers deploy, according to regional military officers and analysts. Iran has made no attempt to hide its "curious" construction effort near Bandar Abbas on the Gulf, as commercial satellite imagery has shown a vessel gradually taking shape, resembling the outlines of a Nimitz-class carrier, three administration officials said. "They got this barge and threw some wood on top of it to make it look like the USS Nimitz. That's all we know for sure," a defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP. "We think they're going to try to get some propaganda value out of it," he said. "We find it very curious...We don't know what Iran hopes to gain by building it." Defense officials stressed that the vessel was not a working aircraft carrier, had no nuclear propulsion system and was essentially a barge outfitted to look -- but not operate -- like a carrier. Officials said the Iranians have previously used barges in military exercises and later broadcast television footage of the vessels being blown up with missiles. The project was first reported by the New York Times, which quoted officials speculating the Iranians may blow up the fake carrier for television cameras as a propaganda exercise. "It is not surprising that Iranian naval forces might use a variety of tactics -- including military deception tactics -- to communicate and possibly demonstrate their resolve in the region," said a third US official, who asked not to be named. Commercial satellite photos show a ship under construction in Gachin shipyard on the Gulf and more recent images reveal a vessel with the unmistakable design of a Nimitz-class carrier, along with fake aircraft parked on the deck. The puzzling project came to light at a moment of lowered tensions with Iran and intense diplomacy, as Washington and major powers try to broker an agreement with Tehran over its disputed nuclear program. Over the past year, Iran has stepped back from assertive maneuvers in the Gulf, officials said, as previously Iranian speed boats had sometimes swarmed around US warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier In WW2: The Fighting Lady - 1945 Educational Film - S88TV1

USS Yorktown (CV/CVA/CVS-10) is one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. She is named after the Battle of Yorktown of the American Revolutionary War, and is the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Initially to have been named Bon Homme Richard, she was renamed Yorktown while under construction to commemorate USS Yorktown (CV-5), lost at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Yorktown was commissioned in April 1943, and participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. Decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, she was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), and then eventually became an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). She was recommissioned too late to participate in the Korean War but served for many years in the Pacific, including duty in the Vietnam War, in which she earned five battle stars. Late in her career she served as a recovery ship for the Apollo 8 space mission, was used in the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! which recreated the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and in the science fiction film The Philadelphia Experiment. Yorktown was decommissioned in 1970 and in 1975 became a museum ship at Patriot's Point, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is a National Historic Landmark. This film is a military documentary told from the point of view of the crew of the aircraft carrier the Fighting Lady, a pseudonym for the Yorktown. Scenes highlight the functions and duties of The Fighting Lady and crew activities, and maps illustrate the movement of the Pacific fleet and its engagement with the Japanese in 1943 and 1944. Footage shows the following: A-24 Dauntlesses, TBF Avengers, Hellcats and other aircrafts as they flew out to the carrier, and the August 30, 1943, strafing and bombing mission over Japanese held Marcus Island, from preparation on the carrier to debriefing. Later scenes cover 1944, when the U.S. forces took Kwajalein Island, the Marshall Islands, Truk Islands, and Caroline Islands through air assaults and troop landings. Mitsubishi Zero-Sens (Zekes) engaged the U.S. Navy assault force and the ship squadron returned to the Marshall Islands for repairs, munitions, and rest and recreation. En route to the battle area, the Fighting Lady encountered and downed a Japanese reconnaissance plane. On the eve of battle, sailors attended church services. Prior to the U.S. assault, the Japanese attacked the U.S. squadron and U.S. planes took off for the Marianas and the Guam Islands where they successfully fought at the Tinian and Mariana Islands. The Japanese and U.S. task forces then fought in the Philippine Sea, where planes engaged in dogfights while ships performed evasive manoeuvres. Final scenes show U.S. casualties buried at sea. Navy ships or naval ships are types of ships that are specifically designed for the use of naval forces. They differ from merchant and civilian ships in terms of design, construction and use. Navy ships are normally made of specialised steel alloy that makes them damage resilient during the enemy attacks. Most of navy ships are armed with advanced weapon system with exception of troop transporters where armament is light or non-existent. Navy ships that are exclusively built for combat are called warships. Navy ships are built in an entirely different way from merchant ships. They are equipped to carry weapons, ammunition and supplies for crew, and are designed in a way to handle and use them whenever required. They are also designed to move faster than merchant ships and withstand damage during an emergency. They have capability to operate independently as well with a squadron of specialised ships with commander of fleet traveling in the flagship, which is the most powerful ship in the group. Navy ships are classified in different categories according to their size and purpose of use. It ranges from the largest supercarriers and aircraft carriers to the smallest fast attack crafts. Modern surface naval ships are often divided into the following different classes. Supercarrier Supercarrier is an unofficial term describing the largest type of aircraft carrier and their displacement is usually over 70,000 long tons. Supercarriers are the largest navy ships ever built eclipsing even the largest battleship classes laid down by all countries. Constructed in aluminium, these ships are the first of its kind and were envisioned to be a networked, agile, stealthy surface combatant capable of defeating anti-access and asymmetric threats in the littorals. Battleship A battleship is a large armored navy ship with a main battery consisting of heavy caliber guns. Battleships have better weapons, armor and are larger than cruisers and destroyers. Because they were the largest ships in a fleet, battleships were used to attain command of the sea and represented the apex of a nation's naval power. When last Iowa-class ships were decommissioned no battleship remain in service (neither in reserve) with any navy worldwide. A number of them are preserved as museum ships, either afloat or in drydock Helicopter carrier As its name says helicopter carrier is an aircraft carrier whose primary purpose is to operate helicopters. Helicopter carriers have been used as ASW carriers and amphibious assault ships. Cruiser A cruiser is large warship built for high speed and large cruising radius, capable of defending its own fleet and coastlines and also jeopardising those of the enemy. Nowadays only USA, Russia, and Peru still have operating cruisers, though the line between cruisers and destroyers is once again blurred. New models of destroyers (for instance the Zumwalt class) are often more powerful and larger than cruiser classes they replace Destroyer They are very fast and maneuverable navy ships used for escorting larger vessels during attacks by powerful short-range enemy attacks. Frigate Frigate is a type of small escort ship used to guard convoys from submarines and has antiaircraft role. Frigate is equipped with radar and surface-to-air missiles and antisubmarine gear. Nowadays many frigates carry helicopters to aid in submarine hunting. Such a vessel displaces upward of 3,000 tons, has a top speed of 30 knots or more and carries a crew of about 200. Corvette Corvette is a small and fast naval vessel ranking in size below a frigate. Modern corvettes are usually armed with torpedoes, missiles and machine guns and have displacement from 500 to 1,000 tons. They are performing antisubmarine, antiaircraft, and coastal-patrol duties in the world's small navies. Providing insight into its battle capabilities, the documentary follows two LCS vessels as they're trialled in preparation for their full integration into the US naval fleet.
