Frequently observed on the wing during our expeditions across Southeast Asia, it was novel to stumble across this Brahminy Kite recuperating at a conservation park in eastern Luzon, Philippines. Such birds don't belong in cages, but when their health requires captivity for brief periods, it's certainly a privilege to be able to study their incredible form and intelligent gaze up close! The Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus), also known as the Red-backed Sea-eagle in Australia, is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. They are found in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia. They favour coast habitats and inland wetlands where they feed on dead fish and other prey.
