UM-Flint Alumni Achievement: Christopher Paul Curtis
www.umflint.edu Christopher Paul Curtis was born and raised in Flint. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the University of Michigan-Flint to study political science. However, in 1972, the chance to earn a good income at the Fisher Body factory lured him away from school. To alleviate the monotony of the assembly line, Christopher began writing during breaks, lunch and any spare time he could find. He continued working at the plant until 1985. While attending classes toward his Bachelor of Arts degree at UM-Flint, Christopher won Hopwood Awards for his essays and for the manuscript of what would eventually become his first published children's book "The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963." It received the two highest honors for children's literature: The Newberry Medal and the Coretta Scott King Honor. For the 2009-10 academic year at UM-Flint, Christopher Paul Curtis was selected to be his alma maters annual Winegarden Visiting Professor.

Alison Seagrave - Hopwood Hall College Alumni
Alison Seagrave, a former catering student of Hopwood Hall College, has gone from strength to strength in the industry and recently opened her own patisserie, 'Macaroon by Alison Seagrave'. After leaving college, Alison worked in some of the finest hotels in London where she cooked for numerous celebrities and members of the royal family. She returned to the North to become head pastry chef at the Harvey Nichols' exclusive Manchester restaurant, and in 2006 was promoted to head chef. In both 2006 and 2007 Alison was named 'chef of the year' in glittering ceremonies for the annual Hi-Life Dining Awards. Hopwood had a really positive effect on my confidence while I was there. If the tutors hadn't encouraged me to spend my third year placement in London, I wouldn't have ended up working in the capital for the following 10 years! The work experience placements make it especially 'real'. Working in a public restaurant heightens the pressure on you to perform well in the kitchen, and prepares you for when you leave college to get a job. I remember how much my work experience helped me - so I have stayed in touch with the college and am keen for students to come here to the patisserie for some of their placements. 'Macaroon' is based on Rochdale's Bury Road and serves cakes, drinks and light lunches. I think setting up my own business is probably the most exciting thing I've done so far in my career. I had a lot of responsibility at Harvey Nichols, but I also had the safety net ...

Mafia Begum - Hopwood Hall College Alumni
Mafia studied Accountancy at Hopwood Hall between 2006 and 2008. After leaving Falinge Park High School, she wanted to study a finance subject and found that the college offered the best course for what she wanted to achieve in the future. Every student on the Accountancy course got the opportunity for an interview at British Aerospace (BAE) after the company approached the college to fill several work experience roles. Mafia was one of six selected for a 12 month training contract as part of the Ambassadors Scheme when she completed her course at Hopwood Hall. This successful end to her studies was also rewarded when she won the Accountancy Student of the Year award for 2008. After using the skills she gained at the college in her BAE training, Mafia was offered a permanent contract and now works as a Procurement Purchasing Engineer which involves working with Harrier aircraft. Mafia says: I loved studying Accountancy at Hopwood Hall because everyone was really supportive, which helped me grow. The tutors were very encouraging and gave me a lot of motivation. It is a great achievement to be working for a blue chip company like BAE and if it wasnt for the college and the course, I wouldnt be working here now.

First Great Western - RBA Train Operator of The Year 2009
First Great Western was named Train Operator of the Year at an awards ceremony last on February 11. The company, which has turned itself around in the last 18 months, beat off stiff competition from train operators, including Chiltern Railways, London Underground and National Express at the national Rail Business Awards ceremony in London. Over the last two years, First Great Westerns performance has risen by more than 10 per cent, with over 92 per cent of trains arriving on time. There has also been a 10 per cent increase in passenger satisfaction scores, with 82 per cent of customers now happy with the service First Great Western provides. Presenting the award, judges said: The joint efforts of colleagues across the company have seen First Great Western move from bottom of the industry performance league table to seventh place out of more than19 train operators. Managing Director Mark Hopwood said: This is a really fantastic achievement we have come a long way in providing a good service for our customers. I want to say a big thank you to everyone at First Great Western for their hard work over the last couple of years and to our customers for their continued support. There is still more to do, but Im really proud of everyone and what we have achieved so far.
