Norwich in the 1970's -- Film 16521
Norwich is a an old city in Norfolk, East Anglia, England. Near the centre of the city is its tallest building, The Cathedral. For nearly 900 years the cathedral, built of stone from France, has been the centre of the Christian faith for a wide area and many visitors come to see it. Nearly as old is this street of timber framed houses. Few people live in these old streets today for nearly all the houses have been converted into shops. This street was built before the days of motor vehicles and is less than four metres wide. The stone faced castle was built to defend the city but today it is a popular museum. Norwich, then, was an important city in the Middle Ages, defended by the castle and surrounded by flint walls. Parts of these walls are still preserved but the modern city has spread out far beyond them. Norwich began to grow on the inside of a bend on the river Wensum. (00 years ago the Normans built the castle and cathedral and the old walled city grew around these buildings. Today the castle remains in the centre of the city, close to the large and important market. Many of the buildings in the city centre are shops. The city is an important shopping centre, with shops of all sizes, both old and new. Every weekday the streets are crowded with shoppers. As well as the shops, there are many offices in the central area. Some of the buildings are very large. This one is the national headquarters of a large insurance company. Shops, offices and - in another part of the city centre - factories. Most of these old factories were built beside the river. Can you guess why? In a city like Norwich many different things are made. More than six thousand people work in the boot and shoe industry, for which Norwich has long been famous. This industry started because leather could easily be obtained from local farms, but today the raw materials come from many different places. in the same way the important food industry of Norwich began with local raw materials, such as mustard. Today, many other food and drink products are made, and more than six thousand people are employed in making them. Printing is another important industry in Norwich. This works specialises in colour printing and bookbinding on a large scale. Steel is used in engineering, and timber in joinery. As we have seen, these industries developed in the valley of the River Wensum, close to the oldest parts of the city. Today, as in other cities, Norwich has grown far beyond the old city walls, as much as six kilometres in some directions. These houses, just outside the city walls, were built a hundred years ago. They don't come up to modern standards and today some are being replaced by groups of flats. Traffic is kept away from the housing areas so that even close tot he city centre, people can live quietly. Norwich is the county town of Norfolk, one of the East Anglian counties. There are many towns in East Anglia closer to Norwich than to any other town. Roads lead from these towns to the city which is also a meeting point of railway routes. Because people come to Norwich from a wide area, the streets of the city centre become crowded. Lorries and vans try to reach the shops an, offices and factories, and buses are delayed by private cars. Some streets have been closed to vehicles and people can walk to work without worrying about the traffic. Shopkeepers say that business is better than before and there is space to sit and rest. Another way of dealing with traffic problems is to build an inner ring road, taking traffic round the central area instead of through it. But a road like this is expensive to build and people living in its path have to move. To re-house these people tall blocks of flats were built on the edge of the city, several kilometres from the centre. Thousands of students study at the University. It could not have expanded in the city centre. The offices of Norfolk County Council, the County Hall, were once close to the castle but now occupy this large modern building on the edge of the city. The livestock market was also close to the castle, in the days when animals walked to market. Today, fleets of lorries bring animals from all over East Anglia and the new site on the edge of the city provides space for three thousand cattle, four hundred calves and five thousand pigs. Cattle are put in pens to await their turn to be sold. Around the sale ring farmers bid for the cattle. This bustling market clearly shows that Norwich is the centre of an important farming region. So, cities like Norwich are important in several ways. They are places to visit for shopping and for entertainment, places to work in offices and factories and market centres for a wide area. Norwich has been important for hundreds of years, even before the castle and cathedral were built. Such old buildings remain to remind us of the city's historic past, whilst all around their is constant change.- published: 18 Sep 2013

Swans TV - Training ahead of Norwich City
. . . take a look at best bits from today's training session ahead of the game against Norwich City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday. Swansea City Association Football Club is a Welsh professional football club based in the city of Swansea, South Wales that plays in the Premier League. Swansea City represent England when playing in European competitions, although they have represented Wales in the past. They play their home matches at the Liberty Stadium. The club was founded in 1912 as Swansea Town and joined the Football League in 1921. The club changed their name in 1969, when it adopted the name Swansea City to reflect Swansea's new status as a city. In 1981, the club were promoted to the original Football League First Division. It was during the following season they came close to winning the league title, but a decline then set near the season's end before finishing sixth, although a club record. It was from here the club suffered a relegation the season after, returning to the Football League Fourth Division a few seasons later, then narrowly avoided relegation to the Football Conference in 2003. Prior to playing home matches at the Liberty Stadium, the team had previously hosted at the Vetch Field. The Swansea City Supporters Society Ltd owns 20% of the club, with their involvement hailed by Supporters Direct as "the most high profile example of the involvement of a supporters' trust in the direct running of a club". In 2011, Swansea were promoted to the English Premier League, becoming the first Welsh team to play in the top division since its formation in 1992. On 24 February 2013, Swansea beat Bradford City 5--0 to win the 2012--13 Football League Cup (the competition's highest ever winning margin for the final), winning the first major English trophy in the club's history and qualifying for the 2013--14 UEFA Europa League. Road Back to the Frozen Four (69 minutes)
History
[edit]Partridge and his academy
The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4]
Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Field exercises, for which Partridge borrowed cannon and muskets from the federal and state governments, supplemented classroom instruction and added an element of realism to the college’s program of well-rounded military education.
Partridge founded six other military institutions during his quest to reform the fledgling United States military. They were the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Portsmouth, Virginia (1839–1846), Pennsylvania Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Bristol, Pennsylvania (1842–1845), Pennsylvania Military Institute at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1845–1848), Wilmington Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Wilmington, Delaware (1846–1848), the Scientific and Military Collegiate Institute at Reading, Pennsylvania (1850–1854), Gymnasium and Military Institute at Pembroke, New Hampshire (1850–1853) and the National Scientific and Military Academy at Brandywine Springs, Delaware (1853).[5]
[edit]Fire and hardship: Norwich in the 19th century
In 1825 the academy moved to Middletown, Connecticut, to provide better naval training to the school's growing corps of cadets. In 1829, the state of Connecticut declined to grant Captain Partridge a charter and he moved the school back to Norwich (the Middletown campus became Wesleyan University in 1831). Beginning in 1826, the college offered the first program of courses in civil engineering in the US. In 1834 Vermont granted a charter and recognized the institution as Norwich University. During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone.
The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants.
After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. Later, by 1884, the Vermont Legislature had the name of the school changed back to Norwich. In 1898 the university was designated as the Military

Glidetrack test - Norwich City
I had a meeting in Norwich so popped into the city for an hour with the glidetrack to do a few tests. It's quite an interesting way of shooting as it's easier to carry around than a tripod and gives me the ability to use any walls, rails or other support to rest the camera on and still have the use of the small fluid head I have fitted to it (not shown in the still).
For more info about this video please see my blog at http://www.pauljoy.com

The music is just me messing with my guitar along with a garage band drumtrack.
